Review: Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich from McDonald’s
The new Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich from McDonald’s is originally from Canada. This sandwich is a part of the Worldwide Favorites lineup coming to U.S. McDonald’s nationwide on June 5. McDonald’s describes their Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich like this:
Made with a grilled or crispy all white meat chicken and topped with tomato & herb sauce, mozzarella cheese, slivered onions, lettuce and sliced Roma tomatoes served on a toasted artisan roll.
So far we’ve reviewed the Stroopwafel McFlurry from The Netherlands and the Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger from Spain. A chicken sandwich from McDonald’s Canada is as close to home as you’re going to get. Too bad Mexico didn’t make the Worldwide Favorites cut… the BBQ Mezquite Ranch Burger would’ve been interesting to have stateside. You have the option of grilled or crispy chicken with the Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich and I went with crispy. I usually base my choice of grilled/crispy/spicy chicken options by whatever the promo image uses and in this case it was crispy. The crunch of the breading was just right. No dried out crumbly spots to be found. This was a mildly salty, seasoned fillet of juicy chicken breast. The produce was excellent on the Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich. Three bright red and flavorful slices Roma tomato, fresh and vibrant green leaf lettuce and slivered white onions with a little bite. The lettuce, tomato and onion together with the tangy tomato & herb sauce made for a very salad-like pillow of ingredients on top of the crispy chunk of chicken breast. While the tomato & herb sauce was creamy, it wasn’t thick enough to stay put in the sandwich without making a pretty big mess at the halfway mark. It packs a lot of extra flavor to the sandwich and a lot of moisture too. There was a TON of mozzarella on my sandwich. Maybe more than what it’s supposed to come with. It’s a mildly milky, nutty soft blanket enveloping the chicken. All this served on a toasted artisan roll that stood no chance by the very end. When it was all over, it was a sloppy mess.At a price of $5.99 for the sandwich alone, the Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich is 90 cents more than the price listed for the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich. So special sauce, onions and a whole lot of mozzarella cheese away from that. The price slightly higher than other premium sandwiches on the McD’s menu. The Worldwide Favorites lineup has been made up of some pretty safe choices. I can understand why from a business perspective, but a Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich doesn’t seem very Canadian to me. How do you think poutine would sell in the States? This messy sandwich was unexciting yet pretty tasty.
Pros: Very flavorful, tangy tomato & herb sauce. Great produce.
Cons: So much mozzarella, so little impact. Very messy towards the end.
