Review: Toasted Cheddar Chalupa from Taco Bell

Taco Bell launched the Chalupa 20 years ago and it has seen some tweaks and variants over that time.  There’s been the Naked Chicken Chalupa…the Bacon Club Chalupa… and the XXL to name a few.  Baking cheddar cheese onto the chalupa shell is new territory… introducing the new Toasted Cheddar Chalupa.Toasted Cheddar ChalupaI guess you can say by now that the Chalupa is iconic.  A couple of decades old and still a mainstay on the menu.  Will a cheesier experience make for a better Chalupa?  Let’s review:Toasted Cheddar ChalupaAs you might have noticed, the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa shell is backwards (inside out?).  I wasn’t aware of it at first, but then I looked at the promo pics.  I believe this mistake has little to do with the overall experience I had.  I still enjoyed this new Chalupa. Taking a look at the inner part of the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa, it’s a noticeable texture change that blankets the shell.  It’s a 6-month aged sharp cheddar cheese and it brings out an extra punch of cheesiness I found very satisfying.  Everything on the inside is the same thing you’ll find in the traditional Chalupa Supreme… seasoned beef, lettuce, diced tomato, reduced-fat sour cream and grated cheddar cheese.  The shell has always been the star in Taco Bell’s Chalupa, the Toasted Cheddar Shell is no exception and I believe it makes for a better overall Chalupa.  It’s chewy and cheesy and tastes like the Cheez-Its and Taco Bell collaboration I’ve been looking for.Toasted Cheddar ChalupaThe Toasted Cheddar Chalupa has a suggested price of $2.49 and my local Taco Bell had it priced for $3.19 (which is the same price as the regular Chalupa Supreme).  It’s a price hike of over 25% which helps remind me I live in Maryland.  In any case, $3.19 still isn’t tough to swallow.  At around that price I expect something that borders on filling and the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa hit the spot with the addition of a $1.29 a la carte selection (Beefy Fritos Burrito).  I called this duo my lunch and a decent value at under 5 bucks.  Speaking of 5 bucks… the $5 Box comes with two Crunchy Tacos and a medium drink.Toasted Cheddar ChalupaI enjoyed the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa because the cheese flavor was absolutely noticeable.  Far too many times in fast food I find that cheese gets muted by meats and sauces and the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa was cheesy without the need to be drowned in cheese sauce.  Try it.

Pros: Toasted cheddar shell impressive with cheesy flavor upgrade and texture.

Cons: Inside out shell makes for confusing pics. Ease up on that lettuce.

Ha, yeah, they made it wrong, but wow does that pillowy fried shell look good. It reminds me of when Long John Silver’s had a chalupa-ish item like 10+ years ago that I effing loved….hmm, maybe all of those were fried inside-out, too.

Anyway, chalupas and gorditas are still fantastic and the fact that TB has discontinued most of the variants over the years really tickets me off. Still waiting for that Santa Fe Gordita to be brought back.

This is one of the best things I’ve ever had there, the added crunch & flavor was awesome. This and the cherry sunset freeze are two solid additions.

You talk to Popeye craze with something with their chicken sandwich nobody even really knows how delicious the new cheddar chalupas in my honest opinion the cheddar chalupa is more tastier than the brand new Popeyes chicken sandwich which is absolutely crazy good so that puts the new cheddar chalupa Crunch at crazy crazy good people are missing out they’re not getting it

They’re priced at 3.19 here also, 3.99 for chicken, and 4.19 for steak

Curious if you’ve had one made correctly yet, and if you enjoyed it more?

It didn’t taste like a Chalupa to me. It tasted like 6 month old cheese.

I liked it acuse of how crispy the cheese was on the outside of the shell it was like almost burnt and really crunchy its ky favorute thing to eat right now. And on keto diet one of these is so good i can just eat it as my only meal for the day. Super good.
