Review: Steakhouse Bacon Cheeseburger from Sonic

Sonic says, “The best flavors of a steakhouse now on your burger!” It’s a bold statement, but there are many bold statements in fast food marketing.  “Steakhouse Flavor In Every Bite” is another.  Let’s review the new Steakhouse Bacon Cheeseburger from Sonic.Sonic describes their new Steakhouse Bacon Cheeseburger like this:

Bakery quality Brioche bun layered with a quarter pound 100% pure beef patty, Natural Cheddar Cheese, Crispy Bacon, Grilled Onions and topped with a Smokey Black Pepper Mayo. Try with Medium Tots for only $4.99!

Forget the hopes of a steakhouse experience in between a bun and one component of the ingredients and you’ve got a solid fast food burger. Most everything about the Steakhouse Bacon Cheeseburger worked for me.  The impressive chew of the brioche bun against the hearty quarter pound beef patty combined with the sticky melt of the American cheese hit a satisfying mark.  Just the right portion of savory grilled onions mixed with the flavorful smoky black pepper mayo provided for the right flavor balance to be worthy of the “Steakhouse” name.
Every bite of the Steakhouse Bacon Cheeseburger where I avoided a piece of the awful bacon was a good bite.  The chew toy bacon completely throws off the harmony of the textures of everything else.  The same can be said about the salt when it came to the flavor balance.  Halfway through the original Steakhouse Bacon Cheeseburger experience, this became the Steakhouse Cheeseburger for me and it was very good.  Bacon does not make everything better when it comes to the Steakhouse Bacon Cheeseburger from Sonic.  At a price of $4.99, I wouldn’t have been surprised if all I got was the burger, but the $4.99 price comes with medium tots.  What’s the upcharge for adding bacon to a burger?  If money could be saved by removing the bacon, this experience would’ve been a 8/10.  Bad bacon, lose a point.

Pros: Works well as the Steakhouse Cheeseburger. Great bun. Good size, solid value. Includes medium Tots.

Cons: Bacon doesn't make everything better.

Grubbing on-the-go: 8.00/10

This was nice – I requested it on the texas toast one time as well (that they use for their melts/”toasters”) but the chewy & dense bun they use does work well with that big 1/4lb patty. The bacon that came on mine was unsurprisingly mediocre but didn’t seem bad like yours – more like par for the course in fast food if you’re not Arby’s or Wendy’s.

Every time I get a burger from Sonic I swear it’ll be the last. I just tried a different “special” burger a few weeks ago for like $5, and the beef had that typical this-was-cooked-yesterday flavor that Burger King burgers always have.

Also, the whole thick super-chewy bacon trend is annoying. There’s nothing wrong with crappy limp bacon when it’s on a sandwich!

I found this to be too salty for my tastes, maybe without the bacon it would have been spot on.

Whew…nice to see a review posted. Almost thought this site had turned into a dedicated ice cream/milkshake flavor update page!
