Review: Spicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips from Sonic

What’s in a name?  Not a reference to Shakespeare, but an actual question that comes to mind after trying the latest from Sonic… the Spicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips.  Titling chicken strips with “Spicy Super Crunch” will obviously have me looking for some heat and some majorly thick breading.  Let’s review.

Sonic Spicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips 1New Spicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips are all-white meat chicken made with a supposedly an extra crunchy spicy breading.  The 3 piece option was priced at a staggering $3.89.  Overpriced, oh yeah… these things were small.  All 3 chicken strips fit comfortably on one napkin with room to spare.

Spicy Super Crunch SonicAfter reviewing the revamped Chicken Select Tenders from McDonald’s the other day and calling their 3 piece for $2.99 price a bad value, this Sonic offering actually surprised me.  The Sonic Spicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips are smaller than McDonald’s Chicken Select Tenders and have a lot less crunch too.  You know what the surprising part is?  I’m way more likely to pay $3.89 again for 3 Spicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips than to go after the less expensive McDonald’s product any time soon.

Spicy Super Crunch Sonic 2Price and lack of a “super crunch” aside, I enjoyed Sonic’s latest limited time offering.  I found the level of heat to be fairly mild and wasn’t too bothered by that because the seasoning was tasty.  I’ll say it was spicy enough to earn the spicy title without me scratching my head wondering why.  The peppery breading had a few areas of extra crunchiness and by not going overboard, the chicken strips manage to balance a nice protein/crust ratio.  I’m always bothered by chicken strips that have too much separation between the chicken and the breading and I was happy that Sonic’s product didn’t suffer from that.

Spicy Super Crunch Sonic 3You get your choice of dipping sauce and I of course went with the standard spicy chicken partner, Buttermilk Ranch.  For my 3 measly chicken strips, the person who bagged my order figured 3 dipping sauces should be enough.  One dipping sauce was more than enough.  The sauce is thick and creamy enough to coat the chicken strips really well without the need to scoop or stir.

Spicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips SonicSpicy Super Crunch Chicken Strips don’t live up to their name so you might be disappointed if you’re really looking forward to experience a super crunch.  Expect a minor crunch and a super price.  I think they are still tasty enough to be enjoyed if you can somehow compartmentalize the terrible value part of it.

Pros: Tasty breading that didn't go overboard trying to be too spicy. Lack of a super crunch is probably a good thing because the chicken was able to play a role.

Cons: Overpriced. This is a borderline snack-sized fast food option so the 3 piece won't make much of a dent in your appetite. Likely too mild for those looking for anything beyond mild heat.

    What a rip off.

  2. Snackeroo says:

Those pieces are so small for $3.89…

  3. Kat C says:

Wow I can’t believe how tiny these are. I’ve been looking for something similar to McDonald’s spicy McBites and was hoping these would do the trick !

  4. Joan says:

Those look pretty fresh and delicious, but umm.. Price? What are they thinking! Never!

And ha, one sauce per strip? Boom.

  5. ninjadude says:

I tried these yesterday. They said they were “spicy”. Really? REALLY? I’m still waiting for any “spice”. There is no spice here whatsoever. If you consider a little black pepper to be spicy.. maybe. Sonic has false advertising on these. Don’t bother.

  6. Jonathan Wayne says:

These look sad, and overpriced, not a good combination at all. Places like Braum’s have 3 pretty fresh chicken strips for about $2.40.

  7. Joe K says:

Yikes on the price. I paid $4.29 for 4 out here, the only size available. Slightly better I guess but still a rip off for what it was.

These would have been great on their chicken strips on a mini hot dog bun they had recently with the buffalo sauce though. Can’t remember what they were called.

  8. Joan says:

Ha. Even more reason to say “no thanks”

  9. Joan says:

Black pepper does not equal spicy.

  10. Alex K says:

If the value of these are a 3.25/10, what qualifies a 1 or 0?

  11. Joan says:

    That’s a great idea, Joe K!

    Their called Lil Chickies, btw.

Am I the only one that has noticed that pretty much everything at Sonic is overpriced? I only go there for the ice cream items. They are pricey too but still a much better deal than Baskin Robins.
