Review: Spicy Chicken McBites from McDonald’s

Chicken McNuggets are classic fast food nostalgia, but of course the McNugget has gone through a makeover or two throughout the years to keep up with changing times. It seems like decades went by with minor changes and upgrades to the McDonald’s menu in the earlier years. Nowadays, something new springs up so fast and exits even faster. Just last November McDonald’s came out with a new snackable chicken called Chicken McBites.  What followed since was Fish McBites and now a spicy version of the chicken. Spicy Chicken McBites were just given a wide release and I sampled the goods for this review.

I purchased the $1.99 snack size box of Spicy Chicken McBites, and on the box it is written:

POP SOME FLAVOR! Bite through the satisfying crunch of poppable pieces of chicken made with juicy premium chicken breast.  Seasoned with a blend of spices, onion, garlic and pepper to give your tastebuds a spicy kick.  These surprising pieces of tender, peppery love are a perfect tasting snack.

The key word in this description is “snack”.  For 2 bucks, it just works as a nice grab and go option and I probably would never consider it being a centerpiece of a fast food meal.  Like most all menu items in the $2.00 and under range, they are great add-ons to something bigger, or could satisfy a quick craving when you’re short on time or money.

When I did my review of the original Chicken McBites, I found the snack size option to be most likely the most preferred way to go.  With the Spicy Chicken McBites, I still say this is still in the realm of add-on or snack.  Other than the snack size, you also have larger options such as the $2.99 regular size and $4.99 sharable size.  While the regular Chicken McBites had a lot of great possibilities when it comes to dipping sauces… Sweet ‘n Sour, Honey Mustard, Chipotle BBQ, Tangy Barbeque, Spicy Buffalo, Sweet Chili, Hot Mustard, Creamy Ranch… I feel the Spicy Chicken McBites work best with Creamy Ranch alone.  Of course, the option is yours, but Creamy Ranch combined with the kick of spices held up as the best combination for me.

The Spicy Chicken McBites are something a bit more different than the standard McNugget and the standard McNugget was too similar to the original Chicken McBites to wow me.  The Spicy Chicken McBites get a slight edge over the original because it’s spicy and offers something a bit different.  In Texas you have your Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken Sandwich, here in Maryland we have nothing spicy on the McD’s menuboard.  That brings something to mind, every variation of chicken gets a spicy counterpart eventually right?  Why has there never been a wide launch Spicy Chicken McNuggets in the U.S.?  Some foreign markets have toyed with them, why not us?

Just like the original Chicken McBites, the Spicy Chicken McBites suffer from the inconsistencies you’re likely to find with popcorn chicken.  You’ll get some nice chunky morsels of chicken and you’ll also get some lackluster meatless balls of crunchy batter alone.

I’m giving Spicy Chicken McBites a quarter of a full point edge over the original just for being spicy.  The heat is very tame and tolerable, but at the same time it offers me spicy breaded chicken which I can’t find at most McDonald’s.  Spicy Chicken McBites are a great example of a fast food snack, but too many crumbly non-chicken bites fail to have these reach higher status.  Worth a sample for your spare change.

Pros: 3 size choices, priced fairly. An improvement over the original Chicken McBites. Plays well with ranch, but you've got multiple sauce options

Cons: Inconsistent morsels... a few with no chicken at all. Packaging with sauce cup holder is kind of weak.

I still haven’t tried the original.

did you ever end up trying popeyes red hot popcorn chicken? wondering how they compared

There’s a review of Popeye’s red-hot popcorn chicken somewhere on GrubGrade. Didn’t Popeye’s discontinue it, though, like they did their Delta sauce?

What’s with all the negativity towards “crunchy batter”? Isn’t that the main reason to eat popcorn chicken? I know it is for me. Not to disparage your review, but I see this in general with reviews when it comes to popcorn chicken i.e. complaints that there’s too much batter. Personally, if I wanted to eat meaty chunks of chicken, I’d just chop up mini pieces of whole chicken and throw them on the grill, otherwise popcorn chicken’s selling point for me is that deliciously salty crunchy batter. In fact, if fastfood chains just sold fried batter and nothing else, I’d buy it within a heart beat…

Crunchy batter is great, I was just pointing out that with a product like this you sometimes get whole pieces of just batter and no chicken.

Tried these about a week ago, and wasn’t really a big fan. However, the rest of the things I ordered were also very poor quality(even by McDonald’s standards) so it’s possible that I received a bad batch. I rarely eat McDonald’s anyways, so there is a very small chance that I’d try these again.

I actually found the spicy Chicken McBites to be extremely hot…to the point where I wouldn’t order them again. Initially, it didn’t seem so bad, but the heat seems to build up over time. Sadly, McDonalds seems to have gotten rid of the regular Chicken McBites and only serves the spicy kind.

I didn’t find them spicy at all but I’m used to dousing things in Tapatio and Siaracha. I think it’s all about personal taste.

Just as a point of reference, the Spicy McChicken Sandwich went the way of the Dodo (or perhaps other seasonal items?) a few years ago. I LOVED them when I was in college, but after living out of Texas for a few years, when I came back they were no longer on the menu—anywhere.
That said, I do enjoy the Spicy Chicken McBites.
