Review: Spicebox Chicken from Popeyes
Another greasy box of grub from Popeyes! This time it’s Spicebox Chicken and this $3.99 meal comes equipped with the standard Cajun fries, biscuit, and dipping sauce.
Popeyes describes their new Spicebox Chicken like this:
Thin strips of all white meat chicken marinated and fried up fresh, then tossed in a blend of 12 spices. Includes Cajun fries, Buttermilk Biscuit and our Signature Blackened Ranch Dipping Sauce for only $3.99.
When it comes to Popeyes, I usually find their promo combo items to be a great value and the same can definitely be said about Spicebox Chicken. There’s just so much food packed in this box that it felt like stealing.
There was roughly 17 pieces of chicken in my box in all shapes and sizes. I’d best describe them as mini chicken strips (think Wicked Chicken for something similiar). When I say 17 I mean the pieces that actually had enough chicken to qualify because there were a couple of crust-nuggets thrown in there. The flavor blend of the 12 spices in Spicebox Chicken came across as mostly cayenne pepper and a garlic/onion powder mix. I found the spice impact to be hit or miss on some pieces where a few of the darker red colored crust pieces got a little too much seasoning. This made for some strips more pungent than others. Overall I felt chicken had a lot of flavor that wouldn’t struggle alone with a need for dipping sauce… but this is Popeyes and they always come through with the sauce.
Blackened Ranch Sauce is the chosen one for dipping with Spicebox Chicken and it’s an excellent choice. You might remember this tasty dipping sauce from Dip’n Chick’n… I was a little disappointed to not have that double sized sauce portion with this entree. The creamy, smoky ranch sauce is a great complement to the spiced chicken pieces, but there isn’t enough of it for all this food. Maybe I should blame myself for dipping my fries and biscuit in it too.The “Spicebox” name shouldn’t scare off those thinking the chicken is super spicy. I didn’t find it too spicy and I’d put it around mild, bordering into medium heat territory for fast food. The blend of spices pack a punch of flavor that should wake up your tastebuds (and you can definitely smell it as it envelopes the cabin of your vehicle). New Spicebox Chicken is an incredible value and a filling meal that should satisfy Popeyes lovers.
Pros: Tons of flavor. Lots of food, great price. Blackened Ranch Sauce.
Cons: Spice impact was a little uneven as some chicken pieces were more coated than others.
