Review: Rolled Chicken Tacos from Taco Bell

This year has been pretty big for Taco Bell.  They introduced a full breakfast menu, a revamped value menu, and started up a cool mobile ordering app.  Along the way we’ve been treated to a bunch of new menu items to keep us happy every six weeks or so.  The latest is something pretty basic and it’s anyones guess how a Doritos flavored taco shell made the national menu before a taquito…. introducing new Rolled Chicken Tacos from Taco Bell.

Rolled Chicken Tacos Taco Bell 1 Taco Bell describes their new Rolled Chicken Tacos like this:

Rolled Chicken Tacos are crispy tacos rolled up with marinated all-white-meat shredded chicken and come with a choice of 5 flavorful dipping sauces: New Spicy Ranch, Nacho Cheese, Premium Guacamole, Salsa and Reduced-Fat Sour Cream.  Rolled Chicken Tacos are available in a 2-pack, 4-pack or 12-pack.

So what’s with the long wait Taco Bell?  Flautas or taquitos or whatever you want to call them seem like the perfect candidate for Mexican fast food.  It doesn’t really matter why and all is forgiven because your Rolled Chicken Tacos turned out to be great.  Let’s review.

Rolled Chicken Tacos 2Taco Bell’s Rolled Chicken Tacos are simple and effective fast food grub.  You can pick up this style of Mexican snack anywhere from a sit-down restaurant to a gas station convenience store.  What surprised me most about these inparticular was the way the corn tortilla rolled taco shell was able to stay so perfectly crunchy.  The thick, crisp texture is one of the best and most satisfying qualities I’ve come across for this style of food. There have been too many times where I’ve had weak chicken taquitos with burnt edges or a too soft of a center so I was pleased with Taco Bell’s version.Taco Bell Rolled Chicken Tacos 3Filling each 6-inch rolled taco is all-white-meat shredded chicken which is marinated in familiar Mexican seasonings and blends of onion/garlic/tomato powder spices.  The shred of the chicken varied, but I found some nice hearty chunks in some spots.  I found the Rolled Chicken Tacos to not be skimpy on the chicken and each carried a decent weight.  The simplicity of Rolled Chicken Tacos is a plus by default as there’s a lot less risk of finding issues when we’re only talking about a couple of ingredients.  Taco Bell takes advantage of the simple combination of ingredients by making five dipping sauces available  The dipping sauces range from average to great.  You get one dipping sauce choice for every two Rolled Chicken Tacos.  The Spicy Ranch is awesome, my personal favorite.  It’s spicy enough, but doesn’t go overboard and has a nice thick consistency and flavor. Nacho Cheese works better as a dipping sauce than most everything else it’s used in so I’d say it was my second favorite.  Premium Guacamole isn’t very premium to me and salsa should be free. Reduced-fat sour cream shouldn’t be in the same value category as these others, but I’d still put it at #3 out of my preferred options.  The dipping sauce container is more than big enough for two Rolled Chicken Tacos and I had plenty left over.

Taco Bell Rolled Chicken TacosAt a price of $1.99 for 2 Rolled Chicken Tacos, I’d put the value at about average and fails to reach “impressive” status once you start comparing to certain Dollar Cravings Menu items.  I’d buy these again and again without much concern over the price since I enjoyed them so much, but I wouldn’t mind them make an appearance on the Happier Hour menu with a special promo price.  There have been some hits (Cheesy Gordita Crunch DLT) and some misses (Waffle Taco) in 2014 for Taco Bell, and as the year is winding down it’s great to see such a solid addition to the menu.

Pros: Perfectly crisp corn tortilla texture. Meaty. Spicy Ranch dipping sauce.

Cons: 2 for $1.99 and 4 for $3.99? I'd like to see a little discount with higher quantity orders. Salsa/Reduced-Fat Sour Cream dipping sauce choices should be free.

These sound and look really good, but it doesn’t look like these are in my area. We did, however, get the crispy chicken stuff, and the biscuit tacos.

  2. Snackeroo says:

Great review, definitely have to try these now. I was a little concerned about the size of these at first but they look pretty good.

  3. Steve Kennedy says:

Tried these yesterday. flavorless except for thick deep fried corn tortilla. 2/10 maybe just not my style but just horrible imo

    • MARIA says:

WRONG! Price is DOPE, crunchiness on another level, the numerous sauce options are out of this world and the chicken was an orgasm in my mouth!!!(:

I got a 4 pack today and mostly agree with the above. It is a gas station taquito, except Taco Bell’s version tasted fresher (like it hadnt been sitting under a lamp for the last week or two) and had a nice crispiness to it and probably a bit more meat than you would get at the gas station. I think a better price would have been $1.99 for two and $3.49 for 4…however I will say that I was full after eating four of them, so maybe $3.99 isn’t that bad of a price after all.

The spicy ranch was really very good: very nice balance of ranch and spice. I didn’t care for the nacho cheese as much as Ryan did. It just seemed bland, particularly when compared with the spicy ranch sauce and I thought the spicy ranch was a much better match for the chicken. I didn’t try the other sauces. I was very happy with the amount of suace I got as one sauce cup gives you more than enough for 2 of the taquitos.

When is the Doritos version coming out?

  6. Justin ST says:

I posted something about the crispy chicken stuff coming out in the Michigan area and it didn’t get posted…what’s up? Yeah, like the first poster, the rolled chicken stuff did not come out in our area, but I’m fortunate, because it seems like that’s a lot better than this garbage here.

Went to try these today and my local Taco Bell did not have them, they did however have a whole bunch of other new products. I forgot what the others were a bunch of wraps like the Wendy’s little chicken wraps. I had a mango bbq wrap, it was not bad. I forgot what the other flavors were, I think they were about 4 or 5 total. They were about $1.70 each. It tasted okay, kind of small though.

I saw Mango BBQ and spicy ranch, don’t remember the other one or two, I think one was a guac based. Also saw crunchwrap style sandwiches done with the crispy chicken, and quesadillas using it also. Plus, like I said, Biscuit Taco’s for breakfast.

  10. Chris says:

I tried them today, I thought they sucked. These would be 10x better if they just grilled the soft shells.

No flavor, all I tasted was the fat from the deep fryer.

  11. CT says:

Based on this review, I regret passing on them yesterday.

  12. CC says:

Tried this just now. They were HORRIBLE. It’s like eating cardboard with a light corn flavoring.

There’s nothing inside it really except a flavorless paste and a few tiny shreds of chicken, half of which looked burnt..and yet still have no flavor.

I got it with the salsa. I think that just chips and salsa would have been tastier.

  13. Heather says:

tried these and they were just alright. they forgot to include my dipping sauce (ordered spicy ranch) and i have a feeling they would be a lot better along with something to dip them in. overall, i think i’d just stop at a gas station if i wanted taquitos and stick to my usual favorites at the bell.

funny thing to include was ordering them overvtge drive-thru intercom and i asked for rolled chicken tacos. the employee said…you mean taquitos? (why didn’t they just call them that in the first place??)

  14. Alex K. says:

I thought they were decent. I had them a couple days ago. Hot and crispy with a decent flavor … price is sort of stupid though. Why spend a dollar per taquito when I can just get myself a Beefy Fritos Burrito?

  15. KK says:

I tried these today. Thought they were pretty good actually. They were very hot and crispy which likely added to the quality. Got the nacho cheese to dip. Will get these again.

  16. rp says:

Tried these recently. They are the same that i can get from the grocery freezer section for a lot less then 2/1.99 and at that price not even worth it. Two words: overpriced and generic.

  17. Nancy says:

These are great. I tried them a few months ago, then 2 weeks later went back and were told they were “discontinued”. They eventually came back (a few weeks ago) and I went back today to be told again that they were “discontinued.” Talk about frustrating!!!

  18. Linda says:

Tried these with the guacamole dipping sauce. yummmm! Went back again and they were discontinued. Seems every time something good comes out, it gets discontinued.

  19. Michele says:

I loved these and was so disappointed to see they’re gone already! The spicy ranch sauce was so good!I really hope they make them a regular item on the menu.

  20. MARIA says:

THESE ARE THE BEST THINGS ON THE MENU! I CRAVE THEM AT 12:45 AM BECAUSE THEY ARE SO DANG GOOD!!!

  21. TJ says:

These are good but whatever Maria is smoking must be even better.

  22. The worst chicken Roll-Ups I’ve ever had they’re nasty they got a awful taste to them
