Review: Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad from Wendy’s
When it comes to salad, I’m usually leery of what fast food chains are offering. There are a few exceptions (namely Chick-fil-A) but I’m mostly content to embrace the inherently horrible-for-you stereotype that burgers and fries have rightly earned. What can I say? I like burgers and fries. Wendy’s, however, has come up with a few really well composed salads of the years, so I was willing to give the new Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad a try.The latest salad creation at Wendy’s is described like this:
Our new Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad features a delicious blend of ingredients like Feta, quinoa, fire-roasted vegetables, and sundried tomatoes. This is a salad experience people are going to love.
There’s no great way to type this (trust me, I’ve tried) but, right off the bat, this might have been the best smelling fast food salad I’ve ever bought. There was a savory, developed aroma to the container that reminded me of being in an Italian restaurant, and that aroma made me crave what was inside the container in a way I don’t usually crave salads.Just like the smell, the look of the salad fits the premium $6.99 price tag. Every element, from the plump grilled chicken breast to the hummus to the feta cheese, vegetable blend, and quinoa, was present, with a bed of assorted lettuces beneath. While the aesthetic appeal was there, the taste was even better. The roasted pepper blend and sundried tomatoes had an immediate impact and give each bite a deep, sweet, and slightly charred flavor that complimented the meaty white beans and chickpeas. There’s an earthy viscosity and roasted garlic flavor in the hummus, which helped to cover each tender chicken breast piece. Both the quinoa and the feta provided a nice touch: The former, with a light crunch and toasted flavor, provided an extra element of textural contrast, while the mildly salty feta provided a true Mediterranean feel. Both ingredients were present throughout the salad, which, even before I applied the extra sweetness and tangy notes of the balsamic vinaigrette dressing, was plenty flavorful and balanced to eat on its own.I’m no stranger to feeling weighed down by fast food, but this salad made me feel full in a content, satiated way. All the ingredients were extremely fresh, right on down to the juicy and bright grape tomatoes and the crispy lettuce blend. I was impressed in every way imaginable. It’s hard to find anything wrong with Wendy’s Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad. Not only is it one of the most nutritious options in fast food, but it really does taste great, not to mention is incredibly filling. Even the $6.99 price tag makes it a good value, particularly when compared against slightly higher prices for premium salads at Chick-fil-A ($7.49 in my area) and even fast casual chains like Smashburger ($7.99 with chicken in my area). While I seldom pass up on the 4 for $4 deal at Wendy’s, this salad is good enough to have me thinking twice in the future.
Pros: Excellent “Mediterranean” flavor in charred vegetable blend and feta cheese. Robust and deep sweetness. Plump, tender grilled chicken. No shortage of ingredients. Incredibly healthy. Good value compared to similar chain salads.
Cons: Hummus is a bit too viscous. Not currently priced in a vegetarian version.
