Review: Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch from Taco Bell

If there’s one item that I’m in love with at Taco Bell, it’s the Cheesy Gordita Crunch.  It’s got just about everything I’m looking for in fast food Mexican grub.  There isn’t much room for improvement with the CGC, but Taco Bell found a way with their DLT brand by releasing the Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch.

Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch Taco Bell describes their new Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch like this:

Warm, pillowy flatbread covered in a melted three-cheese blend, wrapped around a Doritos® taco and topped with a zesty Pepper Jack sauce.

What puts the Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch in the category of “awesome fast food” is the way it nails its combination of flavors and textures while still being true to the brand.  You have your choice of flavored Doritos taco shell and for this review I went with the one that started it all, the nacho cheese.

Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch Taco BellThe exterior gordita flatbread acts as the warm blanket to comfortably contain all the delicious ingredients.  Having a melted cheese blend of mozzarella, cheddar, and Monterey Jack adds a gooey element to double as flavoring the flatbread and sticking it to the next layer… the Doritos taco shell.  So gordita flatbread, then melted cheese blend, then Doritos taco shell.  For texture, you get pillowy soft followed by warm sticky cheese, followed by crunchy shell.  While the Doritos shell seems slightly less crunchy than the standard corn taco shell, it still works really well here and the extra kick of cheesy flavor is a big plus.  The melted cheese glues the soft flatbread to the crunchy Doritos shell and carefully catches the shattered hard taco shell pieces with each bite leaving virtually no mess.  There’s more crunch towards the top of the Doritos CGC where the heat of the seasoned beef and melted cheeses don’t quite reach.

Nacho Doritos Cheesy Gordita CrunchSeeing as the nacho cheese flavored Doritos shell is distinctively different enough in its saltier, sharp cheese taste over the three-cheese blend, this product it really cheesy (oh and it’s also topped with shredded cheddar cheese).  That nacho cheese Doritos taco shell kicks the flavor up a notch. A regular corn shell could never achieve what the flavored DLT shell does in this product.  The result is obviously more flavor and an improved product overall.  Shredded lettuce is just filler, nothing special but a little extra cool texture to bulk it up.  Warm seasoned ground beef brings flavors of traditional taco meat spices (predominantly garlic/onion/chili powders).   The Pepper Jack sauce is like the icing on the cake as it adds another added flavor and texture element.  Creamy, zesty, and not at all overdone… this sauce complements everything.  Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch ReviewPriced at $2.69, the Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch is a steal for something I found so satisfying.  If you’re a fan of the Cheesy Gordita Crunch and Doritos Locos Tacos… this product is exactly what you need in your life.  The Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch blends a variety of flavors and textures that are so satisfying that I’m officially calling it my favorite Taco Bell product of all time.

Pros: Crunchy, chewy, cheesy. Awesome combination of flavors and textures. Better than the original with the addition of the DLT shell (choose from Nacho/Fiery/Cool Ranch).

Cons: Nothing significant with the topping of shredded lettuce and cheese. Slightly less crunch from the DLT shell when compared to the traditional corn taco shell.

Since the loco taco was introduced, I have been ordering a Double Decker Taco and substituting the regular shell with a Fierey or Nacho one. Good to see they have taken to my idea

I totally agree that Taco Bell hit the nail right on the head with this. The Doritos shell adds that extra punch of cheese flavor without resorting to gooey nacho cheese sauce, and the pita-like outside makes the whole thing really filling. I’m definitely getting another next time I eat there.

Such praise! I’ll have to go get six for dinner tonight. Thanks, Ryan!

  4. Alex says:

I had my first one today and it was good, it’d be even better if they used a chalupa instead of a gordita.

This has been part of a “secret” menu since the Doritos Loco Taco was introduced. Totally spot on with this review, it’s one of the best (if not THE best) items TB has to offer.

  6. Kyle says:

It’s 7 AM and I want one of these. *drools*

I had my first one of these ever Thursday and this has become my favorite Taco Bell item ever. Its like they sprinkle crack in it or something. Food of the gods. Heavily obese gods, but gods nonetheless.

  8. I totally agree with you Ryan. I absolutely love the regular Cheesy Gordita Crunch (but hadn’t gotten it for a while due to the high number of calories). When the Doritos version came out last week, I got it opening day, and you are right. The cheese shell really enhances the overall flavor without overpowering it. It is probably my favorite thing there, but Taco Bell is awesome in general anyway.

Will have to try this with the Fiery or Ranch Shell, never been a fan of the Nacho Cheese. Is the Pepper Jack sauce a new addition, sounds good.

All I get at tbell is the CGC. As much as I love it, it does have its problems…

First off, I’ve been trying to train all of the employees on “CGC” in lieu of saying the full name (which is quite a mouthful). Unfortunately, I seem to be the only one crazy enough for the CGC to abbreviate it and, as such, I typically have to say the full “cheesy gordita crunch” for a few orders before they catch on.

The CGC can prove difficult for some locations to perfect round the clock. Oftentimes the flatbread seems to not have been warmed enough and the CGC seems somewhat stale. I’ve found that the best time to order is typically between noon and 6PM when I more often than not can get my CGC served at optimal warmth. Even if you get a perfect CGC, it’s best to eat it immediately because it starts to become too moist and lose it’s flavor after sitting in the wrapper for too long.

While I’m not usually one for white condiments, as far as the pepper jack sauce goes, I can’t even taste it. Through my personal side-by-side comparison, ordering a CGC with and without pepper jack, I was unsure that either had the sauce until I saw a bit of it hanging out after I took a bite.

If you use the acronym CGC in your order as much as you do in your comment, I would probably get annoyed.

    • MN says:

My local Taco Bells within 30 miles, all four of them, are absolutely hopeless in making the CGC, regardless of time of day. They let them sit so the crunchy taco gets soggy, they don’t put enough sauce, they wrap it in the wrong paper so it goes cold, it’s complete sabotage. I really wish they would crack down on these lazy franchisees giving it a bad name.

I had one last night in addition to two crunchy tacos. It was good.. yes… but I guess I really like regular tacos because I thought the tacos were better.

This could work, I would have it with steak or chicken though and Baja sauce.

Had this the other day, it was sooo good.. my new favorite!

I always get nacho cheese instead of the sauce that comes with it. Love these though.

Love your site and reviews, but I tried this based on your review, and didn’t like this item at all…

The inner doritos shell was very mushy, the whole thing was too salty for me, and needed some chopped tomatoes to balance it out. I did like the sauce, though.

    I’ll stick with chalupas.

    Man he’s right.these are Grrreat!:D

I completely agree, the cheesy gordita crunch was already one of their best menu items and this makes it even better. I’m not quite ready to call it my favorite bell item of all time… I mean the old school mexican pizza with the green onions? The original grilled stuft burtio (before it got gigantic and full of crappy guacamole and doubled in price)? The so amazing I can’t believe it’s gone volcano menu? But yes, cheesy gordita crunch, way up there in the taco bell pantheon.

Actually an even better version I once had by accident was when I ordered a volcano taco and a cheesy gordita crunch and they mixed them up and put the volcano taco in the gordita shell, then I got a regular taco with baja sauce basically on the side. The resulting volcano gordita crunch was amazing! I still miss the lava sauce.

  20. This reminds me of getting 3 doritos locos tacos and 3 cheesy mini quesadillas then putting the doritos locos in the mini quesadillas and cancer. Lol
