Review: Coffee Creme Donuts from Dunkin’ Donuts
Over the years Dunkin’ Donuts has branched out from a simple donut and coffee spot to expand into offerings such as Grilled Chicken Flatbreads and Roast Beef Sandwiches. While I like the added variety, I’ll always see Dunkin’ as a morning drink shop and maybe grab the occasional donut. The latest from DD combines what they do best… coffee and donuts. Here’s my take on their new Coffee Creme Donuts.
The press release for the new Coffee Creme Donuts reads like this:
For coffee fans seeking a sweet treat this summer season, Dunkin’ Donuts is introducing a perfect combination of two Dunkin’ favorites with new Coffee Creme Donuts, the brand’s first donuts made with Dunkin’ Donuts’ famous Original Blend Coffee..
The donuts are available in two varieties: Glazed Coffee Creme Donut and Coffee, Creme & Sugar Donut. I was expecting to like the Glazed version over the powdered sugar one, but it turned out to be just the opposite.
Both donuts are filled with coffee buttercreme, but there’s something about the Glazed version that didn’t quite hit me with a true coffee flavor. I think the candy sweetness of the glaze was a lot stronger than the more bittersweet coffee buttercreme center. That combination of varying sweetness melded together to throw off the overall vibe of eating a coffee-flavored donut.
I found the Coffee, Creme & Sugar Donut replicated what I’d like out of a coffee-flavored donut. It features a yeast shell filled with coffee buttercreme and finished in powdered sugar. By having a more simple combination of flavors without too much of a contrasting sweetness, the Coffee, Creme & Sugar Donut really stood out to me a lot better. The softness of the donut was also more preferable to the slightly hardened exterior of the glazed version.
With a price at 99 cents a piece, Coffee Creme Donuts are an OK value. You’re not going to make much of a dent in your appetite with a donut, but it pairs well enough with coffee to feel like a semi-complete breakfast. You’d think coffee with a coffee-flavored donut would be overkill, but it works.
Pros: The more simplistic Coffee, Creme & Sugar Donut had a pleasant combination of sweetness and tasted pretty spot on in its coffee buttercreme filling.
Cons: Glazed version is OK, but probably had a little too much going on and the coffee flavor takes a backseat to the glaze.
