Review: Buffalo Ranch Filler Sub from KFC Canada
Nobody at Quiznos or Subway should be losing sleep over KFC Canada’s Filler Subs when it comes to market share. Launched to loosely coincide with the FIFA World Cup of soccer, er, football, this trio of not quite foot longs (advertisements boast nine inches) represent participating countries. Chicken Marinara for Italy, Cheddar & Tomato for England and Buffalo Ranch for the U.S. of A. No tears, Americans, no tears.
Three tasty, signature KFC crispy strips were liberally doused with Buffalo sauce and Ranch dressing. OK, perhaps crop dusted is a better description of the application. In fact, upon lifting the hood, the top sub bun resembled a Van Gogh, if it was forged by a Hooters line cook.
Not saying skimping on sauce is a bad thing but as the bread used was quite soft and spongy, it takes little time for the sub to become a chewy, bloated sammie. And with that, I lovingly nicknamed my Lunch, “The Hot Mess”. For some reason, there were a few key items missing in action. My lettuce and cheese had decided to sit this one out, instantly downgrading it from Filler, to Minimalist Sub. These two items would’ve been key in foiling some of the acidity the hot sauce presented.
However, even without these bells and whistles, the Ranch dressing performed bravely in the line of duty. Tangy, rich, spicy; this sub tasted like wing night. Towards the end, I got tired of wringing out my bread and ate my last chicken strip sans carbs. For you thrill seekers, KFC begs you to “Ask for it in spicy”. My counter person seemed extremely disheartened that I didn’t. I felt like a Jackass cast member telling Johnny Knoxville I wasn’t going to jump the tricycle over an alligator filled swamp.
The Buffalo Ranch Filler Sub was priced at $6.79 CAN and indeed filling. Certainly not something you’d attempt to eat on the go and perhaps would’ve come in with a higher GrubGrade if someone at the prep station hasn’t fallen asleep at the wheel.
Pros: Delicious, classical marriage of chicken, Buffalo sauce & Ranch dressing.
Cons: Weirdish, spongy bread. Lettuce and cheese missing in action. Need a tarp instead of napkins.
