Product Review: Reed’s Peanut Butter Ginger Chews

I, admittedly, am not a big candy eater. Every once and a while I’ll indulge in a dark chocolate with almonds bar, but mostly my sweet tooth just leads me to ice cream, cookies, and kids cereals. But the other day at the grocery store they were having a closeout in the “natural” section, and looking for something to munch on before walking to class, I grabbed a box of Reed’s Peanut Butter Chews.

I’ve talked about my new found discovery of peanut butter, and I’ve always been a fan of the spicy and earthy notes of ginger, so I figured my usual mantra of “no candy for you” could spare the $1.39 for a box of nine chews. Besides, at just 25 calories and 0 grams of fat each (although, someone explain to me how a product with peanut butter has no fat), this seemed more like health food than candy.

Well, I’m sure glad I took a chance on these because they are freaking awesome. Coated in a sweet tapioca starch, they have a rich peanut butter taste with not too much sweetness and an amazingly complex ginger flavor. A little speck of ginger is in each piece, which slowly dissolves in your mouth amidst an aroma of peanut butter and spice. These really are amazing, and not long after my first piece I was ripping into another chew. Before I knew it the nine pieces were gone, and I was suddenly planning out my next trip to stock up.

Unfortunately, our Smith’s has a crowd of cheapskate college students with a hankering for natural foods, and they were all out of the Peanut Butter flavor by the time I made it back. Too bad, because I’ve never seen these anywhere else. Still, if you can find Reed’s Peanut Butter chews, I suggest you buy them. Then, I suggest you send them to me, because, you know, I’ve got to find something to help me lay off the sugarfree gum.

Pros: REAL GINGER! Fat free? peanut buttery goodness. Keeps me from grinding me teeth and overdosing on sugar free gum. Peanut butter and ginger? BRILLIANT!

Cons: Mad rush in the natural foods aisle. Downing entire box in one sitting. Having to explain that I don't really have celiac disease and that I just really really like peanut butter and ginger.

I love the “I totally tore into the box after the first one” look.
