Fast Food Review: Ultimate BLT Market Fresh Sandwich from Arby’s

The classic BLT sandwich is as simple as they come.  Bacon, lettuce and tomato star in this favorite of many with the bacon taking center stage (and not just a partner to some other cut of meat).  While making it at home might be the way to go for many, a quick fix at a drive-thru fast food restaurant leaves us with few options.  Luckily Arby’s has us covered with their Market Fresh line of sandwiches that conveniently includes what they call the Ultimate BLT Sandwich.

Arby's Ultimate BLT SandwichArby’s describes their version of the BLT like this:

Strips of thick cut pepper bacon with green leaf lettuce, ripe tomatoes and mayo on toasted thick cut honey wheat bread make this deli classic something you won’t soon forget.

I’ve got to point out right off the bat that I’m a fan of the Arby’s pepper bacon.  A meatier cut of bacon with a taste to wake up your senses. The distinct flavor of pepper bacon is the main player here and is interesting to savor alone (pepper bacon makes an appearance in the Market Fresh partner, the Roast Turkey Ranch and Bacon).  A little crisp and a little crunchy, but not enough to take a major texture hit. In order to make this a better buy for the money, I would’ve liked to see a couple more slices of bacon. I think Arby’s does a particularly good job with their veggies on the Market Fresh sandwiches and the BLT was no different.  With only a few ingredients to be found, you’re really going to want your lettuce and tomato to be presentable.  Fresh and proportioned well to the sandwich.  I always hate when I get nasty tomatoes or way too much lettuce spilling everywhere and I have yet to experience these issues with the Market Fresh selections. A healthy heap of mayo to make the creamy finishing touch to the BLT is standard with the classic BLT taste.  The only major gripe I have with the Ultimate BLT is something that can be hit or miss.  I was never one of those kids that had to have my mom cut off the crust of my sandwiches.  The package is held together well thanks to the bread, but with Arby’s Market Fresh, I usually find myself leaving about half of the crust uneaten.  It’s just thick, dry and sometimes a little tough.  I love the sturdy, hearty slices of honey wheat bread but could really live without that crust. I like when Arby’s cuts the sandwich in half too, some Arby’s do it and some don’t.  Isn’t it known that cutting your sandwich in half makes it taste better? 🙂  Oh and this BLT packs 880 calories, 46 grams of fat and 1740 mg of sodium…yay bacon!

Arby's Ultimate BLTSo is this BLT really the Ultimate?  Meh, not really. It’s a decent sandwich with some quality features, but it’s a tad rough on the wallet.  For a sandwich over $4.00 at a fast food place, I’m really looking to be stuffed afterwards and a BLT just doesn’t cut it.  Shelling out another couple bucks to make this a combo puts you in territory that makes it difficult to make the purchase.

Where’d the mayo go in the last pic? The side view had a boatload of it!

It looks good — do you think you could find a plastic knife and do a little crust surgery yourself? I don’t like crust either, but the bread looks so nummy.

  2. Bunny says:

You’re right, it could use a few more bacon slices. The bread looks very dry. Wheres the mayo? :s

  3. Ryan says:

@ SkippyMom … Mayo is hiding a bit in spots…but it’s def there. Crust surgery is a good idea. I actually like crust on my bread…but just not on this.

@ Bunny … Hehe…the mayo is there…hidden under a giant lettuce leaf…check out the top right pic of the collage.

A truly great BLT should need no mayo or condiments of any kind. It all boils down to perfectly cooked bacon and fresh tomatoes. Maybe a little added pepper, and that is it.

Why doesn’t this use the same “new” bacon that Wendy’s uses?

  6. jesi says:

$4 seems like a lot of money for this.

  7. that bacon looks absolutely perfect

    The bread needs to toasted.
