Fast Food Review: Pumpkin Pie Milkshake from Arctic Circle

Not gonna lie – when it comes to seasonal eats, I’m a sucker for anything fall flavored and everything pumpkin themed. You all know of my hopeless obsession with Einstein Bros Bagels pumpkin bagel poppers and bagels, but my love of the sweet taste of pumpkin pie flavored eats extends far beyond the breakfast table.

So when I heard that Arctic Circle – a western hamburger chain with locations in seven states (including 38 in Utah) – had come out with a seasonal Pumpkin Pie Milkshake, I knew I had to stop in. If that wasn’t enough to entice my friend Allison and I during our weekly fast food hunt, than the free coupons I received via the chain’s E-Club certainly did the trick. Hey, we are college students, after all πŸ™‚

Arctic Circle has a reputation for its “above the rim” milkshakes, which are decadently rich and made with fresh ingredients and by hand. Let me tell you, this mantra is not just a marketing slogan. Allison and I watched as an attendent made our milkshakes, and even topped them with a generous helping of whipped cream. As for being “above the rim,” you are definitely getting some serious extra bang for your buck (or in our case, the four cents of sales tax).

Aside from its hefty size, the first thing I noticedΒ  – and immediately loved – about the shake was its thickness. Lets be clear here – this is not a frosty. “Thick” may not do justice to the shake, which survived the ever important flip test.

It’s thickness and constancy was more like what you’d expect from a custard-based shake, and for a usually healthy eater like myself, it was a temptation worth diving into. Flavor-wise you are getting a pronounced, extremely sweet pumpkin flavor. The usual assortment of “fall” spices come out in full blast, and makes each lick enjoyable. I really got a strong taste of nutmeg, which did a nice job of bringing out the creaminess of the shake while also toning down the intense sweetness. I found the flavor to be very much like Edy’s pumpkin flavored ice cream, but the texture wasn’t as gritty and had a lighter flavor. This is not a flavor you get “used” to or get bored with, and the relative thickness and sweetness of the shake make it a great treat at any time.

Pros: Incredibly thick. Rich as all get out. Unbelievably sweet. Above the rim. Great pumpkin flavor and pronounced nutmeg spiciness.

Cons: Brain freeze. Probably one of the top five most nutritionally horrible things I've ever put into my body. Needing to bum rides off my friends to go back and get more. Limited time only item. Sucks for you if you don't live in Utah (ahem, mi hermana)

Wow, looks incredible! If only this chain was in California. The only chain we have here that sells good milkshakes (in my opinion) is Chick-Fil-A…but they don’t have a pumpkin flavor. πŸ™

I LOVE this time of the year because pumpkin is the best flavor!

Haha, why do they even bother giving you a straw? You’d wear out your cheek muscles trying to suck it up.

Probably the only time the phrase “Sucks for you if you don’t live in Utah” has been used and was actually true πŸ˜›

Damn do I want one! Also on board with the pumpkin love; I just picked up a bottle of pumpkin spice. Great in coffee, sprinkled on ice cream, etc. Just need a little, so the spice jar will last a LONG time!
