Fast Food Review: Premium Fish Fillet Sandwich from Wendy’s

While nowhere near top seller status, fast food fish sandwiches still do deserve recognition.  Recently I sampled the Premium Fish Fillet Sandwich from Wendy’s.Wendy's FishWendy’s Premium Fish Fillet Sandwich is billed as “Hand-cut fillets of North Pacific cod in a crisp Panko crumb breading, served with crisp lettuce and creamy tarter sauce on a warm bun.”Wendy's Fish Fillet SandwichWhile currently only available at select Wendy’s locations, I feel this fish sandwich deserves to be offered at every Wendy’s location.  With Ash Wednesday now behind us, do not be surprised if you see fast food fish offerings (and possible deals on Fridays) spring up at many restaurants.  Not to get all religious on the GrubGrade audience but if you didn’t know, Catholics abstain from eating meat on Friday’s during the season of Lent.  Fish is accepted and has become a staple on the Friday’s leading up to Easter.  So the fast food industry capitalizes on this.

Fish from Wendy'sThis fish sandwich is better than what I’ve come to expect from a fast food joint.  It’s tasty, filling and doesn’t leave me wanting something extra.  Solid bun and nice crunch on the fish fillet make the total package work for a hearty fish sandwich.

Pros: Great corn dusted bun holds in everything nicely. More filling and better quality than the McDonalds Filet-O-Fish sandwich. Good crunch to the fish patty. Includes fresh lettuce and tasty tartar sauce.

Cons: A bit pricey for the sandwich alone at $3.69. Although the tartar sauce is tasty, there was just too much of it (this obviously is expected to vary from experience to experience). Might be a little awkward/messy if you are eating on the go as the bun will shed it's dust and you're bound to stain something.

I was inspired to try this fish sandwich and I was somewhat disappointed with it. The fish itself was on the dry side and had a slight taste of spiciness. The lettuce didn’t seem as fresh. Maybe it was just on one time occurrence. I’m not sure how anxious I would be to try this one again.

Do they sell a ‘regular’ fish fillet sandwich?
Whenever i see the commercial for this, i notice that it says ‘for a limited time’. i’m wondering if they will return to their lesser quality fish fillets after awhile.

Yeah I wondered the same thing. Seems that this time of year fish hits fast food menus in a more “in your face” kind of way. The only places I know for sure always have a fish sandwich on the menu are McDonalds, Burger King and Arby’s. Not sure how every market is though. Planning to review a new fish sandwich each Friday leading up til Good Friday…stay tuned.

I’ve never tried a fish sandwich from any of the fast food joints(well other than Long John’s and Captain D’s), but am tempted to try this one. I hate tartar sauce, s oI have to ask. Would this sandwich go well with a dash of Texas Pete hot sauce?

Would really like to know why it is only sold during certain times of the year? For those of us that are not catholic but do like fish, this is really stupid. Alot of other fast food restaurants sell theirs year round so why not Wendy’s??

Last time I had a cod fish sandwich at Wendy’s it tasted flat and bland; I yearned for a McFish burger. I hope the cod fish has improved this year. I will try once more to find out.

Wendy’s disappointed me with this so called premium fish sandwich.

I was very disappointed with the fish sandwich as well. The fish itself was very dry, and the sandwich was only slightly bigger than McDonald’s filet of fish. It was not worth the $3.69.
