Fast Food Review: New! Grilled Chicken from KFC

Has anyone seen the 90 second absurdity of my latest GrubGrade video?  Just an excuse to throw in some ridiculous chicken imagery mixed in with the New! Grilled Chicken at KFC.

If any of you made it to the end of the video, you’ll see that I gave the new offering from KFC a 8.25/10 overall GrubGrade score.  I honestly do feel this new grilled chicken deserves to be in “Very Good” territory.  I believe the grade is definitely boosted by the fact that KFC has made a solid attempt at making an alteration to what the whole concept of the place is based on…FRIED CHICKEN!  It’s definitely refreshing yet seems like it’s taken way too long for KFC to offer your bucket of chicken as grilled and not fried.

As soon as the order of chicken entered my car from the drive-thru lane, the entire vehicle was engulfed in the aroma of this chicken.  KFC states, “It’s marinated, seasoned with KFC’s famous secret herbs and spices, and then slowly roasted to juicy perfection.”  This new grilled chicken is especially flavorful and juicy.  Not once did I feel as if what I was eating wasn’t from KFC.  I think even in a blind taste test, I’d be able to tell this is still a KFC taste.  Don’t let the idea of grilled chicken cloud your view of this being a clean meal.  Wow was this chicken greasy!  This isn’t skinless grilled chicken and that definitely adds to the oily traps of marinated herbs and spices.  The drumsticks and breasts were a decent size but as always, the KFC thighs and wings are garbage to me.

You still should applaud KFC for coming out with something that goes against it’s namesake.   It helps cater to the more health-conscious and I can honestly say the taste doesn’t suffer from it (the grilled chicken breast has 17 less grams of fat than the fried counterpart).  It’s a very rare occurrence that I pick up a bucket of fried chicken from KFC but if the KGC sticks around, I’m more than likely due for a repeat visit.  (Update 8 months later… Fiery Grilled Wings are now available.)

Pros: Very juicy. Taste isn't sacrificed with the switch to a better-for-you chicken from KFC. I like the tagline: "The Only Grilled Chicken That's Bucket Worthy!"

Cons: Pretty messy and greasy. KFC thighs/wings are such a waste in my opinion.

  1. Yeah….I don’t know….like you said and from what it looks like, it’s still darned greasy. Doubt I’ll ever try it. I’m thinking this may go the way of their last “grilled” attempt. Boston Market just does it better and right. I do, however, appreciate their attempt at being “healthy”…at least healthier…which doesn’t take much 😛

    Oh, I have to dissagree. Roasted chicken beats grilled any day. I’m going to have to try this sometime.

    Evan you are crazy, unless by grilled you mean a George Forman grill. Although I have to admit that outside of friend chicken I’ve always found the best application for chicken is either between a bun or with a knife and fork.

    I agree, roasted chicken is the best (especially Cuban and Thai roasted chickens!)

    If anyone ever makes it to San Diego you have to try Saffron Thai. The best chicken ever.

    Food Detectives is laughable. They pass off sensationalistic drivel as science. Poke around on http://www.truthinlabeling.org/ for some better information about MSG. For example, on Food Detectives, they served a meal then asked who was having MSG symptoms. It doesn’t usually happen that quickly. Like I said, check around that site.

    That’s directly from KFC’s website. Notice how it’s not only marinated in MSG, it’s also in the seasoning, and NOT in the ‘under 2%’ category either. Also has beef fat, beef powder(???), and hydrogenated oils. Mmmmmmmm, finger lickin’ good!

    There chicken taste good grilled, fried or rotisserie but it all still has the skin on it which is terrible for you. So unless they come up with a version without skin it is a waste of my time. Not having it for me and the family. We will continue to patronize Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

    I justed ordered a 2 piece dark meat meal and I was very impressed. It was VERY good and I was so surprised. I went in thinking that I was going to be hugely disappointed and it was going to suck. On the contrary, mine was not gross. It was not greasy, but very moist. I thought it was seasoned very nicely. I will definitely get this again as a quick dinner.

    I just tried KFC’s grilled chicken today and was disappointed. My first bite into it, a bunch of oil came dripping out. I seriously thought it was still fried, and plates with grille lines had been pressed against it at the end to make it look grilled. Their fried chicken tastes better. And it did still have the skin on it. On the upside, it was still moist. I don’t recommend it though, stick with the fried or go someplace else that serves baked chicken if you want healthier.

    I went to KFC for that grilled chicken. I’ve NEVER had grilled chicken that sucked so bad. Better than fried chicken I guess but…wow. I was disappointed. I would think if someone wants to make grilled chicken, they’d consider taking the skin off too! I mean the idea of grilling meats is to make a healthier meal. Well, I’ll stick to baking it at home, much better taste and health-wise.

    This chicken is AWESOME! I have ate at KFC more in the last 2 months since the Grilled debut than I have in the last 2 years. I have grown tired of fried chicken, and have been looking for a restaurant where I can quickly get grilled/baked/roasted chicken. Boston Market(which I love) seemed to be the only option. Now I have a new one. I actually think this is better than Boston Market chicken. It may be cooked in an oven, but it has an authentic grilled flavor. I don’t even get any sides with my order. Just the chicken. It has a ton of flavor and I highly recommend it.
    By the way, whoever commented that the grilled chicken skin is bad for your health but they will continue “to patronize Taco Bell” for their familys’ health has to be crazy. Taco Bell? Healthy?

    Hey Fat Guy from Rochester…grilling has nothing to do with health. Yes you can make a healthier meat dish by grilling or roasting but that is a side effect and is of course controlled by the nature of the ingredients and recipe. Get a grip and a clue 🙂

    Thats a rip off, at my KFC, they always have a $19.99 for 14 piece (thighs & drumstick) 6 biscuit, 3 large side, and a tasty lemon cake.

    Had KGC for first time last week. VERY pleased. Lots of flavor and healthy portions of great meat on bone. We were very pleasantly surprised and will keep buying as long as it remains above average for road food. Actually, it would be good anywhere.
