Fast Food Review: New Beefy Crunch Burrito from Taco Bell

I haven’t really cared much about anything “new” coming from Taco Bell in a while… and for good reason right?  Too much rehash of the same ingredients with nothing actually new.  Finally something comes along that’s actually new… Flamin’ Hot Fritos.  The key ingredient in the new Beefy Crunch Burrito is actually something we haven’t seen before at Taco Bell.  So does a little heat and crunch make a big impact?  Let’s review. The Beefy Crunch Burrito consists of seasoned ground beef, rice, nacho cheese, reduced-fat sour cream and Flamin’ Hot Fritos. Coming with a promo price tag of just 99 cents, it’s hard to be too critical.  Does the size warrant the price?  Heck yes it does.  I’ve always been impressed with the Taco Bell “Why Pay More?” value menu.  To be able to spend less than 3 bucks on a few value menu items and feel full afterward, that’s the sign of a solid value menu.  While the Beefy Crunch Burrito is just promo priced at 99 cents, I’m sure it will get a jacked up price if it ever became a semi-regular on the big board.  Taco Bell has confusing prices/values for this reason.  The value menu makes everything else seem like oddly over-priced.  So I’ll just say this:  for 99cents, the Beefy Crunch Burrito is a great bargain item. Let’s get into some taste/texture impressions.  Is it beefy?  Does it crunch?  With a name like Beefy Crunch Burrito, you’re looking for a hefty protein-packed meal and a decent crunch from the Fritos.  Does it live up to the name?  Meh, so-so.  The burrito was indeed “beefy”, but as for crunch, I would’ve liked some more Fritos for a more substantial crunch. Taco Bell should have added another word in the title of this burrito.  It’s a little deceiving that there is no “Flamin'” mentioned… because these are in fact, “Flamin’ Hot” Fritos being spotlighted right?  As for heat, average to decent for a Taco Bell item.  On a spicy-scale of 1-10 for Taco Bell items, I’d give it a solid 7. I can see these hot Fritos being used in some of the Volcano Menu items.  So why not substitute the nacho cheese for Volcano sauce?  Maybe call it the Flamin’ Hot Beefy Crunch Volcano Burrito?  Oh I see, 12 syllables would be a hard sell.  The nacho cheese was proportioned well, but I felt there was too much sour cream (and I usually like a lot of sour cream so that was odd).  I’ve been reading comments about too much rice.  To me, the rice was done just right but it barely makes a taste impact.  The star of the show is the Frito, too bad there weren’t more.  The crunchier Fritos reside on the drier ends of the burrito, while the rest take a moisture hit in the middle. In closing, I liked the Beefy Crunch Burrito just OK.  It’s a decent addition to the menu that would work a lot better with more Fritos. I took it a bite of Frito with every other bite.  Crank that up to every bite and I’d be happier.  As is, the experience goes one bite, same old regular burrito, next bite something new, then back to regular burrito… etc etc.  The only thing new about this burrito is the hot Fritos, so it deserves more of it.  Knowing Taco Bell’s history, more Fritos will just be an opportunity for a future creation.  Probably something along the lines of the New! Beefy Double Crunch Burrito.  It could happen… 🙂

Pros: Loved the Flamin' Hot Fritos. Only 99 cents. Good value. Decent heat.

Cons: I'd like more Fritos for more crunch. Sour cream was a bit much. Only 15 grams of protein... could use beans.

Interesting use of the fritos. Taking a page from Sonic’s book, no? Good review!

I’m not going to lie, that looks amazing!

I would like to see them give Cheetos a try as an
ingredient (the narrow hard ones, not the big fluffy

    I wanna try.

I went into to Taco Bell tonight to try this, and they DID
NOT have it. They had a “Cheesy Beefy Melt” instead. I was
disappointed because I really want to try this, but I ordered up
two of the $.99 Beefy Melts and they were pretty decent. But I’m
SOOO disappointed because I love the Flamin’ Hot brand of

I tried this today too, but mine had a ton of Frito’s.
Maybe your burrito maker was munching on the ones that were
supposed to go into yours? The more Fritos, the spicier it got, and
    it was delicious.

Hey I went to my go-to Taco Bell today and (much to my surprise) they had this! I tried it, and, well, it was pretty much ‘meh’… The added crunch from the Fritos was actually kind of odd, although the heat was nice. My go-to Taco Bell still has the 5 layer burrito for 99 cents, so that’ll still be my value menu item of choice.

Like I said before, previously, just avoid the always nasty Taco Bell sour cream andit will be a tasty burrito, but not too different than the nacho crunch burrito!

I’ll definitely give this a try. I usually have a couple of the beefy 5 layer burritos but they’re $1.29 at my location. This adds rice and fritos, removes the 2nd tortilla and drops the price by $0.30, not bad in my opinion.

this burrito is soo good, i used to eat the 5 layer burritos but now Im grubbing on the frito burrito and i live in austin,tx and its only a 1.00 here..

Just a quick tip that might make it better for you next
time (or when you go at all, for people reading this that haven’t
gone and had one yet): Try it without the rice. I don’t
particularly like Taco Bell’s rice, so I ordered mine without it,
and I noticed a lot of Fritos in mine. I think that could be in
order to “pad out” the burrito in the absence of rice, which they
certainly did – it was amazing! My only gripe was that I couldn’t
taste or feel the heat from the flamin’ hot powder…but then
again, I regularly chow down on menu items covered in volcano
sauce, so I guess I’m used to the heat. 😛

It’s okay, I guess! I was never in love with nacho cheese sauce, so maybe I’ll give it another shot without it sometime.

they definately should mention the ‘flamin hot’ in the
name, because last time i was there i was like “woo hoo taco bell,
you put chips in a burrito. congrats.” but flamin hot, i can get
behind that. i would prefer volcano sauce to nacho cheese too, and
i always feel like their burritos need some other component besides
beef and rice, it gets weird texturally. beans would definately
help. you know what, i could use some chipotle.

Very tasty item and a great deal for $.99. For anyone counting calories be advised it is a calorie bomb!

  16. Adam says:

I’ve had them add lava sauce to the Beefy Crunch, and while it’s 30 cents more(Making it 1.30 or so), it becomes one of the best Taco Bell items I’ve ever had, outside of the Cheesy Gordita Crunch. Definitely worth the extra money.
