Fast Food Review: Doublicious Grilled Chicken Sandwich from KFC

I didn’t feel like combining both the Original Recipe and Grilled versions of the Doublicious from KFC in one review so here’s a little mini review on the grilled.  If you want the full 800+ word of the Original, click here.  The grilled version of the Doublicious has no bacon and no funky mayo-ey Colonel’s Sauce.  The grilled Doublicious has Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce and honey mustard barbecue sauce on a Hawaiian roll.

The Verdict: The Monterey Jack cheese has a little more impact on the grilled version over the Original recipe.  There is no battle with bacon and fried chicken so it stands out some more.  The lettuce is kinda boring and average but the sandwich may have seemed a bit lonely without it.  I liked the honey mustard barbecue sauce a whole lot better than the Colonel’s sauce.  I think in the future if I were to get the Original, I’d hold the Colonel’s sauce and ask for the honey mustard barbecue (I’d probably go without the cheese in the Original too).  That said, the honey mustard barbecue is sweet and a smidge smokey… it complements the grilled chicken well.  Once again, the star of the sandwich is the sweet Hawaiian bread.

You might be wondering which one I liked more… well I’m giving a higher GrubGrade score to the grilled version. I actually think the Original recipe version could enter the “Very Good” range of scores if you switched sauces with the grilled version. Also drop the price by 50 cents or so and you’ve got a hit on your hands.  That said, both sandwiches are worthy of a purchase.

glad to hear this is good, I had the original double down and got horribly sick from the grease.

  2. Adam says:

Awsome review Ryan. I think it’s a pretty good price for a combo, and given the uniqueness of the sandwich, the grilled version seems to top most other places [except, of course, the classic Chick-fil-A Chargrilled 🙂 ]

  3. SkippyMom says:

What is up with that bun? The “grill marks” look like they were painted on. And sorry but the chicken looks anemic. Doesn’t look like a keeper but your review sounds promising. 🙂

  4. Bunny says:

The chicken looks boiled instead of grilled.

  5. I’d probably go with the fried instead, I have this worry the grilled would be really slimy and soggy texture wise.

  6. Jessica Leigh says:

This looks like it might be good. The bread has extreme grill marks – they are a little off-putting to me. Also, I agree with the above comment – the chicken looks boiled.

  7. Mike N says:

I thought the same thing about the grill marks on the bun. They remind me of Texas Grill Fritos … “I can still see my dad with the apron on, ‘better flip that frito, dad, you know how I like mine.'” (Mitch Hedberg)

  8. Keith says:

Awesome reviews Ryan on both Doublicious sandwiches – nice to get some info on new fast food and it makes me want to try one or the other… the Hawaiian bun is definitely a cool addition.

I saw packaged, sandwich size Hawaiian buns at the grocery store the other day too, so maybe I’ll just make my own version…

  9. Heather says:

I just had this sandwich and it was good. I really like the Hawaiian bun and the honey mustard bbq sauce. I dont’ think I would change anything on the grilled, but the next trip to KFC will be to try the original with the honey mustard bbqs sauce.
