Fast Food Review: Crispy Potato Soft Taco from Taco Bell

When I think of tacos, I think of your basic taco.   A hard/soft tortilla shell, with beef or chicken, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream.  Perhaps, I’m not thinking outside the box enough.  As you know, Taco Bell thinks outside of the bun when it comes to tacos.  They are always expanding their menu with new items that appeal to different taste buds.  One item that is a good example, which you can find on their Why Pay More Menu for 79¢, is the Crispy Potato Soft Taco.

Crispy Potato Soft Taco

I love Taco Bell’s Why Pay More menu and have become a big fan of the 89¢ Chicken Burrito-Fresco style.  For that price, I can get two and have lunch for $1.78, and still be fairly calorie/fat conscious.  I don’t mind trying new things so I decided that along with my normal chicken burritos, I would give the meatless Crispy Potato Soft Taco a try.

Taco Bell describes the Crispy Potato Soft Taco as:

A soft flour tortilla filled with crispy potato bites, Pepper Jack sauce, crisp, shredded lettuce, and real cheddar cheese.

That’s basically it.  Nothing really special with this taco, except for the fact that it could appeal to the vegetarian out there.  The potatoes are mildly seasoned and slightly crispy.  The shredded iceberg lettuce and cheddar cheese is typical of what you’d find on most Taco Bell menu items.  The flavor standout comes from the subtle bite of the Pepper Jack sauce that Taco Bell is currently using on the new Black Jack Taco. The ingredients on this taco (at least on this occasion) are very uneven as you can see from the last picture in this review.  The potatoes are taking over half of this taco and the lettuce and cheese are taking over the other half.    It would be a better product if the ingredients were equal throughout.  This wouldn’t be much of an issue if it was strictly position of the ingredients but I would’ve like to see more of some and less of some others.  I can’t help but take bite after bite and think something is missing. As I previously mentioned, this is a good item for the non-meat eaters out there but for the rest of us, it leaves you yearning for some protein.

Crispy Potato Soft Taco from Taco Bell

This isn’t a bad item if you are looking for something different and cheap.  This isn’t a very filling taco and with mainly carbs, it won’t stick with you for long.  The 79¢ Crispy Potato Soft Taco contains 260 cal/13 g of fat/6g of protein as compared the the 89¢ Chicken Burrito Fresco-Style which carries 340 cal/10 g of fat/14 g of protein.  This makes me think I’d rather pay the extra 10¢ and get the Chicken Burrito -Fresco-Style and know that I am getting an item that will satisfy my appetite a lot better.  For the vegetarians, give the Crispy Potato Soft Taco a shot but for the rest of us, leave it as a little side item or just pass altogether.

I’d go with the beef and potato. I’ve got to have some meat, but those potatoes are really good. Next they should put the pepper jack sauce on the beef and potato.

  2. It has potato, it has to be better then a 6!

  3. Adam says:

Haha, is anything at Taco Bell ever put together evenly?

  4. Jillian says:

Kudos to Taco Bell once again for being vegetarian-friendly, but they really could’ve put more thought into this one. Tomatoes or jalapenos wouldn’t suck here.

It mildly reminds my of the Long John Silver’s fish taco that they had a few months ago, where one it’s four components consisted of the little pieces of breading that fell of the just-fried fish.

Seeing this review just reminds me how much I like those little buckets of potato/cheese sauce/sour cream they sell. Mmmm.

  6. Yum Yucky says:

That pic is a hot mess. So why am I salivating??

I’m pretty sure that somebody in Corporate was eating the Cheesy Fiesta potatoes out of that little styrofoam-ish bowl/cup with a fork when they came up with this idea. We all know that the only way to get all of the potatoes/sauce out of that bowl is to either lick it or use your finger. This way, it’s all contained in the tortilla and…wait for it… you can get your fresh veggies too! 😉

I’m confused. Since when is a tater tot a taco ingredient?

I am sticking with my tried and true bean burrito. 🙂

  9. RossS says:

So, what’s this cost them to make…5 cents? if that much? Not impressed. I’m with Skippymom on this…just give me my B&C burrito(s) and I’m happy.

  10. Bunny says:

I love these new potato tacos. I can eat 2 of them and be full compared to 4 soft beef tacos. I didn’t get to try the cheesy potato burrito 🙁

These things are soooooooooooo good! The pepperjack sauce works really well here, unlike in the blackjack taco where it just makes the taco taste like corn!

  12. Jesse says:

I like that taco bell is expanding their meatless menu. I personally try to keep my meat consumption down to once a day or so. However, crispy potatoes as the base for vegetarian item is probably not the healthiest way to go.

  13. James says:

Am I the only one that thinks these potato soft tacos are amazing? For a bit over $1.50 I’m full and barely had 500 calories, probably the healthiest fastfood around. Give me the potato taco for less money and 100 less calories any day over the chicken tacos. If you’re dieting this is the best item on the taco bell menu.

  14. Jane says:

These tacos are amazing!!!! They taste sooo good. I agree that it’s not very healthy but there isn’t much on taco bell’s menu that’s healthy. It’s a great option for vegetarians. I am satisfied off of 2 tacos.

  15. jerrod b says:

This looks reeeeeeally tasty. Not too unhealthy, compared to its other soft taco siblings.

  16. robin says:

it’s basically a small order of fries on a tortilla… right?

    • Mysterion says:

Thats how I think of these, McD’s, BK, Wendys etc have their value fries, this is Taco Bells version

  17. Roze says:

I absolutely love this taco! I always at least order 2 when I take a trip to taco bell. Just like the Black Jack Taco, which they need to bring back :(, the pepperjack sauce makes it delicious! I give this taco a 10.

  18. KK says:
