Naked Chicken Chips Coming to Taco Bell on May 11

The Naked Chicken Chalupa from Taco Bell was released earlier this year and coming next week is the first spin off product… Naked Chicken Chips. Beginning Thursday, May 11, Taco Bell will be promoting the “first chips made entirely out of fried chicken”… i.e. their version of chicken nuggets.  A 6-piece order will have a suggested price of $1.99 and come with nacho cheese dipping sauce.

Clever girl, Taco Bell. These are chicken nuggets, and I will fight anyone that tries to tell me differently.

  2. Brad says:

So chicken nuggets with nacho cheese dipping sauce. Not very inventive…

  3. Roy Wilbury says:

Weren’t these test marketed with Lava Sauce as an option? I remember seeing pics of the test marketing, and obviously their version of chicken nuggets isn’t very interesting, but I was excited by the chance to have the Lava Sauce back.

So they couldn’t even offer that second option for this national launch? I guess they really just don’t want to take on the cost of making the sauce on a large scale again. Pffft.

    • Alex says:

This. I wish they’d at least sell them in stores.

      • BBB says:

It probably wouldn’t taste the same though. I bought the chipotle sauce in the bottle before and it tastes nothing like the chipotle sauce in the stores. I was very disappointed.

    • JP says:

Volcano taco and a mango strawberry frutista or give me death!

      • doctorx0079 says:

Now if the Volcano Taco ever comes back I’ll be forced to try that just because you said that. 😉

  4. Jen says:

These are just chicken nuggets!!! Yay, more pre-stamped chicken. I’m so excited. *blank stare* talk about re-branding….I will definitely pass.

  5. JF says:

I’m surprised they aren’t using ground up Doritos or Fritos for their breading (on these and their naked chicken chalupas). That might be something worth trying.

    • Jon says:

I read somewhere that the Doritos shell makings won’t hold up in a fryer, so that’s why they’re not used in things like this.

      • JF says:

If you do it like mozzarella sticks (or anything similar) and use the right binding agent (eggs almost always work) and freeze them for a few hours before frying, it should work.

  6. M-Logan says:

What are the chances these are legit white meat bird as opposed to chopped/pressed/formed/mysterious….

    …..not very good I’d wager.

Considering a 6-pc at McDos now costs $4.00, and with TB’s inclusion of a cup of nacho cheese on top of whatever sauce you want – that makes this a fine value. To the oh-so-clever folks above who couldn’t resist pointing out that these are just chicken nuggets shaped to resemble a tortilla chip – your powers of observation are very keen. Thank you, I thought they were tractors disguised as seahorses.

    • doctorx0079 says:

The Grilled Stuft Nacho was really just some stuff in a tortilla shaped to resemble a tortilla chip. Viz. And yet some people are still going on about how they miss it.

    • Sascha says:

I don’t know where you get your McNuggets from, but where I get mine they come 20 for $5.

      • Bubbsy says:

The 20 for $5 is a limited time special deal. The regular price for a 6 pc at most McDos is $3.60 give-or-take a coin — $3.69 at all the locations around west Michigan for example (prices at these locations are not outliers by any means), sooooo….

        • Robert says:

McNuggets, even when not explicitly on the menu, have been $5 for 20 for years now in Chicago. Not exactly temporary.

          • Sascha says:

sooooo, that’s why I said I don’t know where you get your McNuggets. However, in Mid-Michigan, as well as in Central Florida, 20 nuggets have been $5 for at least a decade now. Hell, I didn’t even realize 6 piece nuggets are still a thing. So yes, you’re right, when compared to an absurdly high $3.60 a 6 piece, these TB chips are a great deal. But when compared to 4 nuggets at Wendy’s for $1, 10 at BK for $1.50, or 20 at McDonalds’s for $5, these come in clearly at “meh” on the value department.
Be that as it may, I will definitely try them.

          • Bubbsy says:

            Fair enough – agreed!

          • Johnnyboy says:

We have them here (DC area) on the 2 for $2.50 deal…you can get (2) 6 pieces if you wanted.

  8. Jonathan Wayne says:

They are going to sell a crapton of these, this is probably going to be one of their biggest sellers ever.

  9. jh says:

Yeah, it’s just a nugget, but if the seasoning is the same as the Naked Chicken Chalupa shell, that makes it interesting to me. Not sure about the cheese, though, and if they think this makes up for yanking the Cravings box, they are sadly mistaken.

  10. Sascha says:

Overall boring. A small spicy kick to ’em, which I appreciate, but I assume spicy was done better by BK chicken fries. As nuggets, these are not as good as Wendy’s or McDonald’s, certainly better than BK nuggets, which I consider not food. There’s also a chickstar, which sounds like a better vessel.

    • doctorx0079 says:

I prefer the Naked Chicken Chips over Wendy’s. I find Wendy’s chicken nuggets to be just like BK’s.

  11. Karen C. says:

Tried these today. I liked them very much without the sauce. They were less greasy than a nugget and had a nice spice.

Locally is being offered in a $5 box. Tremendous value with a Crunchy Taco supreme, burrito supreme, and 6-pack of these with a soda. I upgraded to the Doritos Locos taco for 40 cents and couldn’t finish all this food.
