Popeyes is bringing back Beer Can Chicken (review) on Monday, August 1st and it’s being rebranded as Beer Can Rip’n Chick’n.  The product is the same as before… it’s Rip’n Chick’n slow marinated in traditional beer can chicken seasonings like butter, garlic, lemon zest, rosemary, and cayenne then hand-battered, breaded and fried.  Priced at $3.99, Beer Can Chicken also comes with fries, a biscuit, and Creamy Cayenne dipping sauce.Popeyes Beer Can Chicken

I like Popeye’s fried chicken the most of the big chains, but their strips are so narrow/thin… so when they fry ’em crisp they’re like tough strands of leather instead of plump tenders. Rippin’ Chicken no exception, the only plump juicy part is the “palm” or base because the chicken is thick enough no to be fried to tough/chewy like the “fingers”. See Lee’s chicken tenders for an example of tenders done right.

I normally love Popeye’s tenders and their LTOs (their shrimp is kinda just OK), but I had this tonight and was underwhelmed. The chicken was a little cold, so I don’t know if that had something to do with it, but it had hardly any flavor at all — certainly less than I’m used to getting from Popeye’s. I definitely got some spice, which I’m guessing was the cayenne, but that was about it. The last time they had Ripp’n Chicken (I forget the flavor that one was), it was better than this……but really, I prefer the tender LTOs.

And this is a beef with the Ripp’n Chicken in general. I realize it’s only $3.99, but the chicken piece is fairly small. Despite the presence of a side and biscuit, it still isn’t an overly satisfying meal. Both times I had Ripp’n Chicken meals, I was still kinda hungry afterward. That’s not usually the case when I eat at Popeye’s. I’d pay an extra buck or buck and a half for them to toss in an extra piece of the chicken. It should at least be an option.

Like I said, a rare swing and miss. In fact, Popeye’s swings and misses are so rare, I may even give this one another try before the month is up, and see if it’s a little better (or at least a little warmer).

I just had this today and I was disappointed. The color was off. The chicken kinda tough. The side and biscuit was good, though.
