KFC Double Down Returns on April 21st

Remember the Double Down from KFC?  Back in 2010 (read our full review), KFC released the chicken sandwich with chicken breast filets in the place where bread normally goes.  It was met with a very mixed reaction, but there’s enough love for the Double Down to bring it back for a limited time.  Starting on Monday, April 21st, the KFC Double Down will make its return to the menu.  The sandwich will be around until May 25th.

Double Down KFCThe Double Down features two boneless white meat chicken filets (Original Recipe® or Grilled), two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce.  The Original Recipe version has 540 calories and 32 grams of fat.  The Grilled version has 460 calories and 23 grams of fat.

    Me again!

I’m split. For one thing, these are actually pretty small. The bigger issue is that my KFC’s chicken is absolutely terrible (dry and cold) after lunch time.

Mm. Tempting though. Well worth the sodium headache.

I guess KFC didn’t want to let Dominos get all the fried-chicken-as-bread attention.

Price? I just read the 2010 review. $4.99 for two pieces of chicken breast filet, 2 slices of cheese, bacon & sauce is actually not bad at all, considering today a Wendy’s Homestyle chicken sandwich costs $4.29 with buns & veggies. Buns add a lot more sodium & calories. Tho it won’t be $4.99 now. If it is, I will be shocked & going out to get one. My favorite Arby’s chicken sandwich is the similar Chicken Bacon Swiss with honey mustard.

Buns definitely add empty calories, but the sodium they add is negligible compared to a second chicken breast.

well MP that was a 2010 price. Might even be 50 cents to a buck higher this time.

I just tried it, Richard. $5.29. Man, what a salt lick this thing is & could only eat half of it. I drink a lot of water so maybe that’s why it’s so salty to me. Nice & crispy.

A MUCH better deal at KFC is the new Dip Em combo:

3 extra crispy tenders + 2 dipping sauces
    any side
    a biscuit
    medium drink
    $4.99

Hard to justify paying the same price for just two tenders with some sauce and cheese between them.

    • BigBelly says:

good call, I had that combo for dinner tonight, very tasty & filling!

    • Robert says:

While I agree the 3 strip combo is a good deal at $5, this is not two “tenders.” There’s much, much more chicken in the double down.

      • MP says:

I would agree. This is at least 4 tenders worth of meat; if not 5 or 6. The filets were about 3.5″ x 3″ & a half inch thick.

  5. […] yes, it happened. The “limited run” legendary whipping-boy sandwich from KFC called the Double Down is back after a multi-year hiatus, to the chagrin and delight of the […]

They bring this back yet ignore the twister wrap, which is one of the best offerings KFC had.

    For shame.

FYI, I think only the crispy chicken variety i available this go-around. At least that’s what they told me at my local KFC.
