Smothered Burrito from Taco Bell Coming Soon

Last November we brought you news of Taco Bell testing a Smothered Burrito in Ohio.  Well thanks now goes to GrubGrade reader Dillon on the heads-up info that the Smothered Burrito is next in line to hit national menus and it’s set to be replacing the Enchirito. Taco Bell has a way of working in new items on Thursdays so let’s see if this Thursday, July 25th is the release date.  The Smothered Burrito features a 10.5″ flour tortilla packed with shredded chicken, refried beans, rice, and chipotle sauce then topped with red sauce, a three-cheese blend and reduced-fat sour cream.  We’ll update with the price and other details when they become available.  In the test run the premium chicken/steak versions were priced at $3.99 and the beef was $2.99.

  1. Darrell Martinsen says:

This looks good, but I really like the Enchiritos. Will be sorry to see them go into extinction the way of the Chili cheese burrito!

  2. Kevin Desai says:

Shredded chicken burrito? That chicken looks like the old spicy chicken, hopefully I can sub it in and out of their other food stuffs!

    • farjo08 says:

I’m hoping it is their older spicy chicken as well. Or at least not their current chicken (which I think tastes horrible).

  3. Roger C. says:

I went out west to some place called Taco Bueno, and like most Mexican joints out there, they had something revolutionary called a “fresh salsa bar.” Sarcasm, obviously. Taco Bell could at least do something like that.

    • Will Buckingham says:

I don’t think anything inside the average Taco Bell could be considered
“fresh” if it’s sitting out in the dining area where the general public can access it. I always cringe whenever my dad wants to stop and eat inside at the local Taco Bell. It just feels grimy in there.

  4. Rusty Shackleford says:

Even though I’m the only person I know that occasionally gets them, I will miss the enchirito. This new product looks good, though.

  5. CB says:

Can’t wait to try the shredded chicken since the chicken they have now sucks.

  6. SkippyMom says:

Not withstanding the *cheese* sauce which looks like mustard – but if I received anything that looked even remotely that good from Taco Bell I would first look to see if I was being Punk’d and if not I would eat the wrapper.

The concept is great and an almost complete rip off of Chipotle.

    Must try this at home.

    • Jimbob says:

Taco Bell’s Nacho Cheese Sauce is my favorite thing they have.

    • Eric says:

I don’t think there is any cheese sauce…looks like chipotle sauce on the inside and shredded cheese on top. I’m assuming you’re referring to the chipotle sauce though, which does have a color somewhere between mustard and cheese sauce.

    • Zachary Jacob Zblewski says:

How is this a ripoff of Chipotle?

      • Jay H. says:

I was thinking the same thing. This is nothing like what you get from Chipotle. Now if this was an article about the Cantina Bell menu I’d get the correlation.

  7. nick says:

    looks good to me.

  8. Dillon says:

Glad to help 🙂 i also did a early review on my YT channel, cant wait to see what you think of it.

  9. Rick says:

Does this mean those shredded chicken value menu items will go live as well?

  10. Heidi says:

So.. an Enchirito on steroids. Nice.

  11. Bob Smith says:

If it looks anything like that picture it could be really good.

If Taco Bell really wanted to up it’s game they’d make their ground beef more like Del Taco’s.

I’d gladly drop these new menu items in return for bringing back full-fat sour cream.

  12. BigBelly says:

yuk to the rice in there :/
I hope they keep the original as a “secret” menu item

When I wait in line, I see kids mostly order off the value menu, and I can’t ever recall anyone ordering this “upscale” stuff. This strategy, and KFC11, I think are destined to be be a big failure for Yum.

  13. A says:

I wonder what else is going. I heard the Volcano stuff is going, and I can’t imagine the Chalupa is long for this world.

  14. Jeff in Middletucky says:

    Woo, I say, woo-hoo.

  15. Will Buckingham says:

Not a big fan of sour cream so I’ll probably ask them to hold that, but I’ll try just about anything they include their nacho cheese in. Love the Beefy Nacho Griller, so this looks like it could be a tasty chicken option. Can’t hurt to try once at least.

    • Bubbsy says:

Reply to you and others that are glowing about nacho cheese sauce that’s in this (I like the nacho cheese sauce, the Queen LOVES the cheese sauce and if we dip into TB she’ll get 4 orders of nachos and just munch while I eat.)

There is no nacho cheese sauce in this item. That’s chipotle sauce. Yes it looks like nacho cheese. It’s not.

  16. cupie says:

The current enchirito sucks. When they brought it back, they used a flour tortilla. It was much better when they used corn tortillas. It was delicious.

  17. Ric says:

Went in today and the manager told me they are available this Thursday, July 25th.

  18. Scrape says:

Looks good! My concern is the size for the price. It will have to be fairly substantial to knock me off the value menu variety feast I usually order. I agree with the other poster who stated they never see anybody order anything off of their “premium” menu, but get value menu items and the regular value meal stuff. TB will lose if it goes upscale. Its not mexican, its not tex…its its own thing…its Taco Bell. Why mess with it?

  19. Pilar says:

Can’t wait to try this, looks great!

  20. Michael says:

Someone answer how this is like chipotole.

  21. Jonathan Wayne says:

Looks okay, one of their better looking items. Pricing seems fine.

  22. […] to a vigilant tipster, GrubGrade announced that Taco Bell’s Smothered Burrito is set to hit national menus. You may remember […]

  23. angie says:

The new shredded chicken will replace the old chicken in the chicken tacos and chicken burritos too. Theyll still have regular chicken for all the other items though…just not the chicken taco/burrito unless you request it.

  24. Austin says:

Wait, so the shredded chicken is going to replace the old chicken in ally chicken burrito or taco? That’s great! So the gross Taco Bell chicke. Will only be in the cantina menu and the quesadilla then? Nice.

  25. Aaron says:

So. Just tried one of these at the local Taco Bell. I must day I’m pretty impressed. The size is well worth the price. There’s a local family owned taco joint that I go to often in town, and they have delicious Mexican recipes. This new smothered burrito is very comparable to there deluxe super wet burrito. I love it

  26. israel says:

Worth a try there trying to step it up hope it taste good.

  27. Cat says:

hubby and I tried the beef one last night and the chicken one just now. Can’t decide which I like best because both were very good. Bang for the buck, both quantity and flavor.

  28. Waller says:

I tried the Smothered Burrito, It is nothing like the advertised picture or the TV commercial. What you get is about half of the ingredients and folded on each end.which I would call false advertising. I will never go back to any Taco Bell for anything. the employees told me they were not allowed to make it like the picture or the TV commercial. The pictures are only to show what is inside them.
