New King’s Hawaiian Pork & Slaw Sandwich from Firehouse Subs

GrubGrade is a big fan of Firehouse Substry the Steak and Cheese.  It’s rare that I see a new sandwich offering at Firehouse Subs so this one caught me off guard.  It shall be mine within 24 hours.  The new Pork & Slaw Sandwich featuring my beloved King’s Hawaiian bread.

Steaming hot 12-hour smoked pulled pork, pepper jack cheese and Hawaiian cole slaw, piled high on King’s Hawaiian bread for an eruption of island flavors.

*Very inside, but this is my best Hawaii-esque attempt at payback for all your Instagram pics Bear… you know you want this.

Only 1020 calories in the sandwich and it doesn’t even look that big.

The Hawaiian Roll, mayo in the slaw, and the cheese do indeed up that calorie anti indeed.

This sounds good, but when I go to Firehouse Subs, it’s for a tasty New York Steamer. I can make those at home on my smoker. Not only that, we have BBQ joints a dime-a-dozen in my neck of the woods, so buying a pulled pork sandwich from a fast joint or chain is just down right wrong.

Having said that, I can’t see this bad for those that like cheese and slaw on their pulled pork Q. I don’t do cheese on my pulled pork myself, but I love pepper jack, so I might try it on one of my own sometime. The mayo slaw, on the other hand …it will be a cold day in hell. I prefer a superior tasting in every way balsamic vinegar based slaw, but it only works on a pulled pork sandwich if a Western Carolina sauce is used. If I go with my favorite vinegar based Eastern Carolina sauce, I ditch the slaw completely. East Carolina sauce only really works with a mayo based slaw, which I can’t stand.

Personally, slaw just gets in the damn way. A truly great pulled sandwich can be enjoyed without the distraction of slaw or cheese. If it has a tasty sauce, all one needs is a little Texas Pete to kick up a notch. If you need more than that, you Q sucks.

Sorry for the thrashing of English language skills bye-the-way. I have been drinking and smoking pork shoulder on my smoker most of the afternoon. Must be the theme of the day I guess.

I think you’re missing the point of this sandwich. It’s not a BBQ sandwich. I think the advertisement is a little confusing. The pork is more like smoked ham than pulled pork. All in all, they took three things I don’t like: Fast food attempts at bbq, cheese on bbq, and King Hawaiian rolls, and made something that actually works out of it. Think of it as a smoky Hawaiian pork sandwich and it’s just fine.

I actually work for a FHS and we were one of the test areas for this. It’s been extremely popular here in Upstate, SC, even though it isn’t the typical bbq sandwich.

As an employee, it’s extremely irritating to make, simply because there’s a bit more prep involved, but all in all, it’s a good pick. The slaw/bread combo is the best part to me. Because I’m not a fan of pork, I just swap it out for sliced chicken and it’s fantastic.

One complaint we’ve gotten is that it is pretty messy. We actually had one older lady come and rage at us demanding we stop promoting it because “it was so messy and nobody warned her.” Yeah, we get some crazies here. Also, the pork is decently fatty. I’m really picky when it comes to gristle and fat, so the pork itself wasn’t really my cup of tea.

Anyway, I highly recommend it to everyone that hasn’t gotten to try it yet!

Raider I agree don’t usually eat cheese or slaw with my BBQ. If I got this sandwich I would probablyl ask for it without the slaw because I’m not crazy about slaw even on the side with other items. I’d probably leave the cheese though just because I love cheese.

I got one of these today and it was pretty good. Mind you, it was upside down to the picture. My slaw was on the bottom. But it worked. And it was kinda tasty. It had a kind of mustardy dressing. If you don’t live in the south and you want something different – go for it.

It looks very good. This sandwich may be high calories, but many slaw makes this food nutritionally balanced.

  6. I had been waiting for firehouse to open a location in MN since I first tried them back in 2004. I really love their club on a sub, Italian and steamer but I’m going to have to try this just for the bread if anything.

  8. IFirst let me say, I am from NC and know a thing or two about BBQ. Personally, Eastern NC is the best BBQ in the workd!). However, I think its unfair to compare this sandwich to other styles of BBQ- that would be like comparing apple to oranges. The pulled pork (Yes, it is most definetly pulled) was moist and smokey. The flavors in this sandwhich has it all…sweet, smokey with a bit of kick from the jalepeno Jack cheese. The slaw was fresh and for this NC girl a must have topping. All in all the flavors worked beautfully together. I really enjoy this sandwich and rate it very high on my list.

Ok you guys need to stop comparing it to bbq. It’s Hawaiian pulled pork. I’m from Hawaii and our food is nothing like bbq. Traditionally the pork would be slow cooked in the ground protected by banana leaves. It is delicious. I haven’t tried the sandwhich yet but I just got annoyed with people trying to compare it to mainland bbq when it’s not comparable.
