On April 8th, my buddy Mitch and I were grubbing hard at a local pizza place for lunch.  We were pounding BBQ Chicken Bacon Pizza from Il Forno Pizzeria and drinking copious amounts of cold beverages.  It’s no mystery that I don’t always lead a balanced life that includes moderation in the food department.  On that day I had a smile on my face as a 31 year old male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and a sexy 198 pounds.  Actually, to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t proud of myself when I fell into a 4-hr food coma later that day.  This sort of binging had gone on for two months and I needed a change and I needed control.  It was way too often that I could be found spending $14 by myself at a Chick-fil-A drive-thru… making sure to order enough food to eat on the ride home and enough for when I got there.  This was an example of my love for grub.  In order to continue with this love, I had to earn back the right to be gluttonous and drop some weight and monitor what I was eating a lot better.

On April 9th I started getting back to the gym about 6 days a week and calculating everything I’d consume.  If you’ve ever gone through a similar situation, you know that the first week is usually the hardest.  Once you have a nice routine in place, it gets easier and the positive changes start to push you towards your goals.  It’s now almost 2 months later and I’ve dropped 20 pounds.  When I was approached for the opportunity to promote Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt (find them on Facebook), I figured it was appropriate to share this little story because Greek yogurt had an important role in my breakfast routine.  Since I was tracking everything I consumed during these last couple of months, familiarity with what I was eating became crucial.  A regular morning morning breakfast would include an apple and Greek yogurt.

So I know we are now in June, the weather is getting from warm to uncomfortably hot here in Maryland and I’m feeling a lot better now that I’m in better shape. I’m in better shape with my mind and body from the positive changes in my diet and exercise regimen.  I’m not here to say that Dannon Oikos 0% is a way to lose weight, I’m saying that if you want to manage your situation in a way that will assist you in your goals, make sure you are including the right things into your day.  Trust me when I tell you that running a blog like GrubGrade doesn’t always make it easy for me, but finding the right products to include in your routine will help you along the way.

    Oikos is probably the worst example of strained (or “Greek”) yogurt out there, yet seems to be one of the most popular. Americans don’t seem to have the palate for the proper stuff.

    The flavored versions aren’t bad, I suppose. Those likely also sell the most.

    Dannon Oikos is my favorite greek yogurt.
    I definitely recommend the Caramel flavor (= awesome!)
    (but why they only offer it in a 4-pack at my local grocery…dunno).

    If I’m eating plain greek, I add 1 pkg splenda and sliced red grapes…yummy!

    The way that I fit Oikos into my routine? Simple; I don’t. =P

    The only type that I’d be willing to try would be the absolute plain – anything else is so jacked full of sugar it’s gross to even think about. Actually, I shouldn’t say ‘willing to try’ considering the fact that I can’t handle any sort of dairy.. ehehe.

    Good for you for trying to eat healthier and lose a few pounds. I know it must be hard when you have this site. 🙂

    I don’t have a taste for the Greek yogurt, as Georg says – I have tried it out of the cup, in parfaits with added fresh fruit/granola and in smoothies and the taste is simply too strong for me. Like spoiled milk I think. I do eat yogurt 3x a day too – it is low in sodium, high in calcium and I really like the probiotic kinds.

    Try this smoothie recipe – so easy, low in calories and good for you.
    1 banana
    1 cup frozen strawberries
    1 cup frozen blueberries or frozen mixed berries
    1/2 – 1 cup orange juice
    1 container of yogurt – any flavor

    Place all ingredients in a blender; mix for a few seconds then hit puree and blend until smooth. Makes 2 servings – can also be frozen into smoothie popsicles. That should help with the heat 🙂

    During the summer, my standard breakfast is Dannon Oikos, plain, with fruit and Kashi GoLean cereal. Protein-apalooza!

    My husband has also come around to eating plain Greek yogurt, with honey and homemade granola.

    When I can get my hands on fresh, in-season cucumbers, plain Greek yogurt will find its way into tzatziki sauce.

    So yeah, we keep it around by the quart.
