In My Pantry: Emerald Nuts
I hated nuts when I was a kid. At least, I thought I hated nuts. Nuts were the snack old people had out on their coffee tables during get-togethers, and were always the first thing my parents’ friends – the ones who didn’t have kids, put out when my family came to visit. The fact that nobody ever seemed to actually snack on nuts didn’t help their reputation amongst a 90’s junk food world filled with chips, pretzels and cookies, so I didn’t exactly think I was missing out on much by passing on the cashews and peanuts for most of my life.
These days though, I’m a nut junkie – especially when snacking. What got me to change my mind that nuts could be more than just the stuff old people put out as a token gesture of hosting? Well, it took a bunch of weird but catchy commercials by Emerald Nuts, as well as some awesome flavors that took the old dry roasted cashew and peanut beyond their boring connotation.
Emerald has a ton of great products, but recently I’ve become addicted to three flavors in particular: Dark Chocolate Cocoa Roasted Almonds, Cinnamon Roast Almonds, and the brand spanking new Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter mixed nuts. I love the flavors of the roasted almonds. Everyone knows almonds have a natural sweetness, but the addition of thick dark chocolate and cinnamon exteriors to the nuts makes it feel like your eating a really decadent dessert. They make a great on-the-go snack and are good for a morning pick me up. My favorite combination is to throw the dark chocolate almonds in a sandwich bag with Cheerios, craisins and Cocoa Puffs. Now that’s a “balanced breakfast” if you ask me!
I’ve been enjoying the Dark Chocolate flavor for a while now, but recently I got a hold of some of the Cocoa Roasted Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter flavor. Um, can you say “Schnikies these things rock?” I sure can. With honey roasted peanuts, glazed pecans, and dark chocolate roasted almonds, snacking on a canister of these is like putting a dream team of nuts into your mouth (And yes, I am clearly aware of what I just said, so get your mind out of the gutter.) Each handful plays off the classic sweet and salty combo, and bursts with sweetness and bold, roasted flavor. Imagine, if you will, dipping a chocolate bar with almonds into a a jar of peanut butter, and then mixing in a pecan pie. Yes, it’s kind like that, except a lot less bad for you and a heckuva lot less messy.
So here’s to you, Emerald nuts. Because keeping a canister of your sweet tasting goodness is so much easier – and noticeably less weird – than keeping a jar of peanut butter with a piece of pie in my cupboard.
