Choices: Kid Cereal vs Grandpa Cereal

The leprechaun tempts me with its sweet marbits and fun shapes.  My “old man” sensibilities have me pondering the fiber-rich goodness and energy packed power of granola.  Oh wait, 5 new shooting stars! Whole-grain guaranteed?! Not getting into my specific choices… Would you go for a kid cereal over the old man selection?  What’s your favorite kid cereal?  Favorite cereal in general?

I would go with the Lucky Charms. It’s better plain, and holds it’s own. Not that Sun Belt ain’t tasty stuff, but you need some background yogurt for that. I couldn’t choose a favorite kids cereals. In a perfect world, my pantry would consist of a random assortment of 17 sugars each touting cartton characters and more than 8 grams of sugar per serving.

  2. Jesse says:

Kid cereals on occasion, but most of of the time I stick with my Grape Nuts or Raisin Bran.

I used to eat entire bowls of just Lucky Charms marshmallows for breakfast. Thinking back, my parents were pretty wreckless for allowing that. 😛

  3. My favorite kid cereal is Honeycomb. Well, ACTUALLY, it’s Malt-O-Meal Honey Buzzers Compare To Honeycomb. My favorite grandpa cereal is corn flakes.

But when you say ‘grandpa cereal,’ all I can think about it Cheerios, because that’s all I ever saw any adult eat when I was growing up. When I got to college and suddenly there were all these cereal options, my mind exploded with possibilities. It was not a proud time for me.

  4. Meg says:

Lucky Charms all the way – except only the marshmallows. ONLY.

My favorite cereal hands-down is Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Well it is more like candy really, and I kinda just eat that out of the box. lol. Does frosted mini wheats count as an adult cereal? If so, great and well if not, I guess I don’t do “grandpa” cereals. 🙂

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child.

Cereal overall – Dorset Muesli Fruit, Nut, and Fiber.

  7. Roger H says:

It depends on what the choices are. I’m not a big fan of lucky charms. There are some “Grandpa” cereals like Special K and things like that which I enjoy, but I still love me some honey nut cheerios and cocoa puffs and corn pops and apple jacks. Oh and delicious honey smacks.

  8. Francois says:

Once I discovered the joys of muesli mixed up with some plain yogurt and a drizzle of honey, I have not turned back.

But I was a big fan of cocoa puffs when I was young, because when you finished your cereal, you had chocolate milk to drink. Count Chocula did the same thing and had chocolate marshmallows.

  9. Courtney says:

I think I lay somewhere in the middle. I love sweet cereals but I like the more rustic taste and textures of healthier high fiber cereals. My favorite cereal right now is Kashi Whole Wheat Biscuits Cinnamon Harvest.

  10. Simon says:

Despite leaving my mouth raw and torn up as if I had been eating a bowl of glass, Cap’n’ Crunch will always remain king. No crunchberries. No peanut butter. Just some goold ol’ golden kernels of Cap’n’..

  11. Manavee says:

My two favorite cereals are diametrically opposed.

They are: Grape Nuts and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

I can’t choose a favorite, as sometimes I’m in the mood for one, sometimes the other, but they are both awesome in their own ways.

And I don’t go for fruit in my Grape Nuts, or microwaving the grape nuts, or baking them into brownies or any of that other mamby pamby crap. I like it straight out of the box with just a touch of milk.

Waffle Crisp, hands down, is my favorite cereal of all time. Since I can’t find it in my area anymore, my other favorites include: Crispix, Lucky Charms, and Raisin Bran Extra (not the kind with yogurt clusters).

    • Adam says:

I think that’s Raisin Bran Crunch, and I think it’s probably the best cereal on the planet. Hefty, sweet, crunchy + chewy, perfect.

    • Adam says:

There is a chain in Utah which carries Waffle Crisp for super cheap. It’s called Fresh Market…I think they are aligned with a food distribution co. called Western Family. I’ve been in waffle crisp exile since graduating and moving back east, but I beg friends to mail me the stuff. It really is just that good.

My goto cereal that satisfies the kid in me and is good for the adult me is Life cereal. I have always had a taste for this product. I am talking about the original flavor. I do like Cinnamon or Maple & Brown Sugar, but the Original is my favorite.

Now if it’s a sugary cereal I crave, I look to the Capn’. Crunch Berries is my fav. I remember before the company did it, picking out the crunch berries from the cereal just to eat.

A close second is Cocoa Pebbles. Sugary cereal with chocolate milk as a result to was it down.

  14. Nick says:

I consider chocolate cheerios a grandfather/kids cereal so that’s my choice for both

  15. so many great cereals… i remember as a small child, i really liked cracklin’ oat bran, which is not a very kid-type cereal. but now i basically won’t touch cereal unless it’s something sugary marketed to kids.

oh! i remember kix as always being surprisingly good, despite being so simple. i never added sugar or anything. it just worked.

do they still make rice krispies treats cereal? that was good too.

  16. ChrisSh says:

I can’t even eat kid’s cereals anymore… I remember when I wondered what kind of horrible person (adult) couldn’t just eat spoonfuls of sugar and love it. I am now that horrible person.

I eat Fiber One Original now (24 years old), not every day, but most. It’s decent with milk, full of vitamins and fiber, and tastes decent enough to me.

But in the good ol’ days I loved Golden Crisps, Cap N’ Crunch, and Honey Bunches of Oats. HBOO seems like a good hybrid option, maybe I’ll buy a box next time I’m at the store!

  17. Chuck says:

I think you should have the granola but pick out all the marshmallows from the lucky charms and add those to it!

  18. Michael says:

My two favorite cereals are actually one of each category. I usually switch between Cinnamon Toast Crunch (or the cheap bagged Malt-O-Meal version) and Honey Bunches of Oats.

  19. Tony says:

Personally, I go for the middle man when I do eat cereal: Kix. But then I also eat it dry so I’m the odd man out!

But as far as milk and cereal goes, I’m fine with plain corn flakes, milk, and a sprinkle of sugar. I’ve always been that way though, even as a child. Never was one for all the sugar/super sweet stuff!

  20. J.B. says:

I usually keep both on hand, I like to mix it up.
For the healthy cereal I tend to eat Honey Bunches of Oats or Honey Nut Cheerios and for the less healthy cereal I love Lucky Charms, Honey Comb, Apple Jacks, Froot Loops and Cocoa Puffs.

I used to like Frosted Flakes, but they are way too sweet now.

  21. VanessaG says:

Yum! I’d take both. One for bfast and the other for a massive snack bowl whiile watching tv. Cereal makes great tv watching time. 🙂 I’ve never had a cereal I didn’t like. I love sugary kinds and grandma kinds. 🙂

  22. Mike says:

AppleJacks for the kiddie cereal & Raisin Bran for the adult cereal.

  23. Lisa says:

not gonna lie…id pick the granola. LOL. i love granola though, its so sweet its practically kid cereal sans cartoon character on the front. 🙂
my fav “kiddie” cereal was def pb cap’n crunch. but im a peanut butter fiend. anything and everything peanut butter I like for the most part.
my fav cereal now is cinnamon pecan special K. yea yea it has HFCS in it, but I dont really care. Its so delicious, I cant get enough. and I eat it with fruit so thats how I ration to myself it’s ok 🙂

  24. Aaron says:

Blueberry Muffin Tops. That is all.

  25. Tanya says:

I like Kashi “Jawbreaker” GoLean Crunch – but I also like Lucky Charms – and Honey Bunches of Oats with Strawberries. Oh wait – and Frosted Flakes – how could I forget that one!

  26. J says:

oh man, i love that banana nut granola. but i love most granola. i would totally choose it over cereal if it wasn’t so high in calories.
if i’m going to eat a marshmallow cereal i choose chocolate marshmallow mateys… oh yum. but my typical cereal choice is brown sugar oatmeal squares. i love that they don’t disintegrate in five seconds like most other cereal. plus they are delicious. too bad they are so expensive!

  27. chocolate marshmallow mateys ftw! you took the words right out of my fingertips, j.
