Best/Worst Leftovers: This Is What Happens When You’ve Had A Bad Week

One of the longest work weeks ever.  It’s Friday and I could sleep til Monday.  It’s the weekend and I’m too tired to move.  About 5 hours ago I had energy and now it has been spent… I’ve given up and given in.  I’m craving Chinese food and there are 19 Chinese spots in my town.  After a little research, it turns out that one of the higher ranked places is located less than a mile from me.  There is a $20.00 minimum for delivery.  I live alone, have no guests and like I said…too tired to move.  So yeah, I just ordered $21.47 worth of Chinese delivery from a place that’s walking distance away.  Me=Lazy.  This grub should be the knock-out punch I’m looking for.

1.  Shrimp Fried RicePt (X1 $5.25)
2.  Sweet & Sour ChickenPt (X1 $5.75)
3.  Fried Dumplings ( 8 pcs) (X1 $5.25)
4.  Spring Roll (X1 $1.30)
5.  Crabmeat & Cream Cheese Egg Roll (1) (X1 $1.50)
6.  Roast Pork Egg Roll (1) (X1 $1.20)

I’ve done a lot of running the last few days and what better way to refuel than with greasy Chinese food right?  There’s no way I’ll be finishing all this food tonight so there will be leftovers.  That brings me to a great question I have for you all.  What food is best as leftovers?  What’s the worst? I would have to say pizza is the best and french fries are the worst.  What’s your take?

BBQ is pretty darn good as leftovers.

  2. jess says:

Spaghetti makes the best left overs ever. Fish sucks though.

  3. Josh says:

call me odd, but I used to eat no joke…cold pizza with yellow mustard on it…had to be french’s though…but re-heated pizza is alright in a spot. Chinese food is alright microwaved the next day just take a paper towel and wet it, wring it out and place it over the food…

Best, Pizza. Worst, Hamburger/Fries (But strangely, I enjoy leftover meatloaf)

  5. brad says:

Crab rangoon/cream cheese wontons/whatever you wanna call ’em, are fucking amazing

Pizza is the best for leftovers. In fact, sometimes it’s better than hot out of the box. If you get a great pizza (like the Maui Zaui from Round Table Pizza) with a lot of toppings and want to eat it within the first 5 minutes of delivery, there are some problems. The toppings are constantly falling off and the cheese has not cooled enough to hold everything together. It’s very unstable.

Once it’s been refrigerated overnight and properly nuked the next morning for wonderful pizza breakfast, everything has congealed and it’s a lot easier to take a good bite that lets you get a proper bread-sauce-cheese-toppings ratio.

    I rest my case.

I love almost anything as leftovers. I hardly ever finish my meal when I go out to eat so I usually have something leftover and I never heat it up, love it cold. If I had to chose a favorite, I would probably have to go with cold chinese food. Especially lo mein

  8. Heather says:

I agree, pizza, spaghetti and meatloaf are all great as leftovers. I actually think spaghetti is better the next day. French fries are definitely the worst.

  9. ratbuddy says:

Five Guys fries are great leftover. Just make sure to heat em in the oven.

The list of best leftover foods:

    1. Curry/Indian food
    2. KFC fried chicken…it just gets better after being microwaved.
    3. Ribs, I can see that.
    4. Pasta with meat

    The worst:

    1. Anything Mexican.
    2. Any sandwich.
    3. Pizza, it just gets too soggy.
    4. Fries.

  11. Joe says:

Fried rice is totally awesome if you add a splash of water, it softens the rice and adds so much more to it. Cold chicken Parm is also incredible. Fries are definitely the worst.

  12. Michael says:

Cold Pizza the next day of course!

  13. Adam Bomb says:

Chili and pizza are great leftovers! I think that Taco Bell crunchy tacos, french fries, and any burger with lettuce, tomato, or onion on it are all terrible leftovers.

  14. Charles says:

I agree with Ratdog, you need to heat 5 guy’s fries in the oven. Anything nuked usually loses flavor, but I usually love chinese or thai leftovers. And meatloaf and lasagna taste much better the next day.

Best: Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy’s without the lettuce. Microwaved for about 20 seconds. Though this sounds insane and disgusting it somehow turns out really well. The cheese actually melts instead of just placed on the meat and hoped for melting, while the tomato almost develops this creamy consistency with the mayo and bacon. Soft chewy, bacony burger deliciousness. So far it’s been successful and no food poisoning yet, so lucky as well.

Worst: Nachos. Not tortilla chips that can be warmed in an oven or fried again, nachos. With the cheese and sometimes accompanied with sour cream, chives, meat, refried beans or vegetables. There is no way to revive these as they take on a casserole or lasagna style consistency, especially in larger portions.

lasagne or any pasta/noodles, it seems the sauce and favours get much more intense having been chilled overnight. I eat it cold mostly.

  17. Vietnamese makes great leftovers. The flavors in the soups seem to become more infused the longer the pho/noodle dish sits.

Worst leftovers are by far the cheesy tater tots and half of a mushroom Swiss burger that I attempted to save last weekend. Cheesy tots must be consumed immediately. Force them down if you must, don’t be a pathetic wimp like me.

  18. AK says:

    Best:
    – Pizza (put it in your toaster oven or regular oven instead of microwave)
    – Chinese food
    – BBQ
    – some pasta (spaghetti, ravioli, lasagna)
    – macaroni and cheese
    – most soups

    Worst:
    – anything with cold toppings or condiments on it (sandwiches, Tex-Mex/Taco Bell-ish, burgers, gyro)
    – anything starchy (buns, fries)
    – ziti (baked ziti is in between)

I’ve actually done the same exact thing with ordering too much food for myself and having it for leftovers. Last weekend it was a Philly w/fries and wings w/fries to get my $20 total. The wings were decent reheated, the Philly was actually great reheated in the oven…and I just ate both servings of fries because I knew they wouldn’t be any good reheated. I’ve done it with Chinese food too…ate for like 3-4 meals.

Generally most sandwiches w/both hot and cold ingredients (burgers, subs etc.) and anything with condiments are gross reheated. I love leftover lasagna heated in the oven (my Italian family has it on Christmas and would always make it the night before and then reheat it the day of Christmas..the flavors had more time to soak in.)

  20. Tony jaguar says:

I actually like really messy cheeseburgers right out of the fridge, they become this congealed mass of a meat stuff. Yum

  21. Kat says:

Pizza is only good as leftovers cooked in the oven for a crisp crust. Chinese is great cold or microwaved. Italian is better the next day. French fries are by far the worst reheated.

  22. brad says:

    poop is pretty bad

  23. Crusader says:

    Best:

    Pizza(the good stuff)
    Pasta
    stir-fry

    Worst:

    anything breaded
    Mac & cheese

  24. Anon says:

Agree with most of what stated above. I might add that steak is also excellent for leftovers. Soup is good, too.

  25. TurkeyBurgers says:

I LOVE leftover subs. I like how the oils, condiments, vegetables, meats and bread just become a giant mess. It is like taking a sandwich and marinating it overnight lol.

BEST LEFTOVERS OF MY LIFE: Rarely do I take home doggie bags from restaurants, but after taking my family out to D.C.’s Founding Fathers restaurant (http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/) this July 4th, I found myself stuffed and wanting to enjoy my remaining dinner for lunch the next day. First of all, Founding Farmers is known for their Organic Cucumber Delight, so I had one made to go (after having around four or five) 😉 I then packed up my remaining Free-Range Rotisserie Chicken and some of my sister’s Southern Pan Fried Chicken and Waffles and some of their steamed green beans…squeezed lemon all over everything and covered it in fresh ground pepper and took it all home. I was motionless for most of the next afternoon but it was worth it 😉

  27. Shannon says:

You ordered my two favorite chinese dishes….shrimp fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. I agree fries are the worst when microwaved and most italian pasta dishes are the best.
