Food News: Panera Rolls Out Summer Menu

Fast casual cafe Panera Bread is rolling out the summer flavors, as the St. Louis-based restaurant chain announced the addition of several new menu items recently. Among the new offerings? A Strawberry Poppyseed Chicken Salad, a Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil salad, Strawberry Frozen Lemonade and a Sweet Onion and Poppyseed bagel. Here’s a little more info:

Strawberry Poppyseed Chicken Salad (280 calories, 8 g fat, 0.5 g sat fat)

All-natural, antibiotic-free chicken, romaine, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, Mandarin oranges, pecans & reduced sugar, fat-free poppyseed dressing.

Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil (770 calories, 47  g fat, 16 g sat fat, 1 g trans fat)

Vine-ripened tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh basil & onion marinated in balsamic vinaigrette then mixed with fresh mozzarella, field greens, romaine, Asiago croutons, salt & pepper and olive oil.

Sweet Onion and Poppyseed bagel (400 calories, 7 g fat, 1 g sat fat)

Sourdough bagel filled with dried sweet onion pieces, poppyseeds.

Anyone tried any of these menu items yet? They all look great, but that Tomato, Mozzarella, and Basil salad has my name on it (although you gotta wonder where the heck the trans fat comes from?) . Full nutritional info can be found here.

The trans fat is probably in the asiago croutons. Bleh.

I tried the Tomato, Mozzarella, and Basil salad a week ago. It was excellent and I think will be moving to the top of my favorite Panera salads list (above the Greek salad). I don’t usually like croutons, so will probably ask them to be left off in the future (and to avoid the probable trans fat). This T, M, and B salad is very similar to a much smaller, but equally delicious tomato/mozzarella salad which comes as a side to Parmesan-Crusted Chicken on T.G.I. Friday’s menu.

i love how their website has an actual nutrition “calculator” where you can break up a meal and drop off certain ingredients and still figure your calories, etc. according to it, there is a trace amount of trans fats in the mozz.

Interesting, the mozzarella has .5 g trans fat that gets rounded up to 1g for the finished profile. The croutons, though, are responsible for 340 calories!

The strawberry poppyseed chicken salad is released every summer, it’s my favorite thing on the Panera menu. I’d skip eating there all winter and eat there 4 times a month during the summer when it would be out when I lived in Georgia.

I work for PB (think I’m commented before) and the new products all seem pretty good. I liked the old Tom Monz salad better, but then again, I’m a cheese whore, so it makes sense. My boyfriends loves tomatoes and is in love with the salad. The strawpop is always a big seller (people ask us for it as early as feb) and the bagel is pretty decent (nice for people who like onion but don’t want the salty, salty bliss of the everything). The chicken tortilla soup is also coming back, and it’s a fav of mine. Plus, low fat…..I wish more PB soups could tout that. 🙂

Seems like Panera will jump through hoops to avoid having to cook or warm up anything besides bread. The pizzas are gone and they seem to be gradually eliminating any ingredient that doesn’t come directly out of a packet. Pass.

The Strawberry Poppyseed Chicken salad is DELICIOUS! It really is one of their best items and they should have it year round! I know they have access to year-round strawberries. I love to order the half a sandwich and half a salad meal. I miss having a Panera bread in my town. One was opened only three months before I graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and I went at least twice a week for the wireless and delicious food, but now I would have to drive 45 minutes away, and when I am in Winston-Salem, I would always rather eat at 5 Guys or Sweet Potatoes!

47 grams of fat seems kind of high for a salad. I guess eating out it is always going to be high.

    The salad is pretty delicious.

The $16.99 Lobster Roll is new too. I’ve tried it and wonder what your opinion is.

Lobster roll? Are you sure you’re not talking about UNO Chicago Grill?

How filling is the strawberry poppyseed salad? It looks great and refreshing, but I’m wondering if I’ll need something else for lunch so I won’t be starving a few hours later.
