Food News: Wendy’s New Premium Salads

New “Premium” Salads have invaded Wendy’s.  They come at a premium price too… $5.99.  I’ve had 2 of the 4 and they are actually pretty big and filling.  I have yet to try the Baja Salad and the Spicy Chicken Caesar Salad.  You can get the salads with either grilled or fried chicken.  What looks good to you?

And here’s a look at the two salads I’ve actually tried so far.  The Apple Pecan Chicken Salad and the BLT Cobb Salad.  I had them last week so maybe my area got them early.

First of all, 2 out of 4 have Blue Cheese Crumbles? I don’t like Blue Cheese – I would rather have feta. I would try to substitute the cheese – maybe the asiago or just shredded cheese. Also, what kind of dressing does the Apple Pecan Chicken Salad have? I didn’t see a dressing in the description. Maybe a poppy seed dressing or some sort of vinaigrette? In fine print at the bottom, it says “Other Garden Sensation Salads Available in Select Markets” which makes me think there are other variations in other places! Does anyone else have a different salad? My Wendy’s doesn’t have any of them yet. Of course, my Wendy’s doesn’t serve breakfast either, and I know some of them do.

The dressing for the Apple Pecan Chicken salad is “all-natural Pomegranate Vinaigrette”. I had this salad and it was really good. The Mandarin Chicken used to be my favorite from Wendy’s, but this one now has the top spot for me.

We are visiting SW Virginia [yesterday, today and tomorrow] and our hotel is right next to a Wendy’s and they have these salads!! And the Apple/Pecan is delish. Very fresh.

The only salad at Wendy’s that I’m interested in is the taco salad. I go there for chicken nuggets, spicy chicken sandwiches, chili, and any burger with bacon on it! The spicy chicken caesar salad looks decent, though.

The apple pecan chicken salad looks really good … I might have to grab that for lunch today. No bleu cheese for me though. I agree Jessica Leigh on that one; I prefer feta.

I guess the blue cheese is there so it would not be wasted just on one product.

Pshh, at six bucks? None of ’em!

  7. I love that they are including asiago in the caesar salad. I really have to try this, I haven’t had a Wendy’s salad since they cut the size and cheaped out on the nachos in the taco salad

    wow … $6! I’ll pass i think …

I don’t think I’d even be able to enjoy a fast food salad if I had to pay $6 for it. On the other hand, I don’t think I’ve ordered a fast food salad.

The whole concept seems like going to a steakhouse and ordering fish.

The Apple Pecan Chicken is GREAT. I like blue cheese so I dot have a problem with it. I think it actually counter acts the sweetness in the pomegranate dressing, apples and cranberries and makes the salad really good.

Well done Wendy’s! I’ve had three this week.

I don’t add the pecans. It’s reduces almost 100 calories and they have a light sugar coat.

I’ve had the Grilled Chicken BLT cobb salad twice now this week and I loved it, but notice my use of the word “loved” as in past tense. I went online today to see the nutritional content and it has 670 calories and 47 grams of fat! Ouch! If I do order it again in the future, I’ll definitely be eliminating the blue cheese and probably the bacon and egg.

  12. Mollie says:

Correction to my earlier post: the 670 calories is actually when you include both packets of dressing they give you. I used my Ipod touch to get the information earlier today and didn’t realize they included 2 packets of dressing in the total. I went to their regular website just now and the salad with no dressing is 460 calories and 26 grams of fat. 1 packet of the dressing they give you has 100 calories and 10.5 grams of fat, but they give you 2 packets with your salad. If you dip your fork in the dressing and don’t pour it on, 1 packet is plenty. This at least brings it down to 570 calories and 36.5 grams of fat, or just use your own lite dressing to bring it down even further.

Yeah, Blue cheese is an acquired taste, but once you have a taste for it and appreciate it, it is awesome. I had the cobb salad today. No surprise that it is high in calories. Nothing that tastes that good is low in calories. But I have to wonder, if your metabolism can’t facilitate a 700 calorie meal, what the hell are you doing at Wendy’s in the first place? Also, these are made of high quality fresh ingredients, and since the government only subsidizes crap food like high fructose corn syrup and the entire corn fed meat industry, it is going to cost you a bit more than a triple bypass burger with cheese and emperor size fries. But there again, if you are so cheap or so poor that 6 bucks for a meal seems outrageous, what the hell are you doing buying meals from the food service industry. Go buy some ramen noodles or something.

  14. Brittany says:

Just a side note, if you dont like the blue cheese, theres a small note on the bottom you can substitute the blue cheese for cheddar cheese.

  15. Lucy says:

Blue cheese is standard on Cobb salads. It’s not a cobb salad without it.
