Derivations: Abbreviated Names
Here’s a short list of some sweet abbreviations that you see all the time but not know how you they came about.
A&W – Taken from the last name initials of partners Roy Allen and Frank Wright.
C&H – The California and Hawaiian Sugar Company.
Nabisco – (originally known as National Biscuit Company)
M&M – One M was for Forrest E. Mars Sr., and the other M was for Bruce Murrie, son of long-term Hershey president William F.R. Murrie (he had 20 percent interest in the product).
PEZ – The name was derived from the letters at the start, the middle and the end of the German word for peppermint, Pfefferminz
Kit-Kat – From the Kit-Cat Club, a seventeenth century political club for artists, which got its name from Christopher Catling (Christopher is abbreviated as “Kit” and Catling as “Cat”).
