RIP Billy Mays and Taco Bell

If you didn’t already know, TV ad spokesman Billy Mays passed away today.  He was 50 years old.

Billy Mays

Known for his OxiClean infomercials, Billy Mays was the bearded loud guy selling everything from Mighty Putty to the Big City Slider.  Turns out, he was about to embark on a string of commercials for the fast food giant Taco Bell.

From TMZ:

Billy Mays was about to film a bunch of commercials for Taco Bell — this according to a radio host who talked to the pitchman a few hours before he died.

Todd “MJ” Schnitt from 93.3 WFLZ in Tampa was interviewing Billy’s “Pitchmen” co-star Anthony Sullivan this afternoon, when Todd eerily admitted to speaking with Billy on the phone late last night.

During the call, Todd said Billy had just signed a deal with Taco Bell for a series of infomercial-style adverts that were going to be filmed in August.

Todd also said Billy told him he “hit his head on the overhead luggage compartment” when the US Airways airplane blew its front tires while landing in Tampa yesterday.

  2. Totally sucks. I’ve been really into Pitchmen recently, it’s a great program. He seems like a great guy and father. I bet those Taco Bell commercials would’ve been great!

On the radio this morning they said after he hit his head he wasn’t feeling well at home.

Sounds like maybe he got a concussion from that blow to the head. I’ve been told that you’re not supposed to go to sleep if you have a concussion.

Turns out he had a bad heart. What a shame. I was enjoying his latest show Pitchmen myself. It was rather interesting seeing how the business worked.
