Food News: McDonald’s Angus Burger

Eight years.  That is how long it has been since McDonald’s released a new burger.  Back in 2001 Mickey D’s introduced the Big N’ Tasty which wasn’t the hit the execs were hoping for.  Fast Forward to 2009, McDonald’s is set to debut another big burger, the McDonald’s Angus Burger.  Three varieties of the new burgers are being tested in certain markets.  Each is a 1/3 pound of 100% Angus beef served on a sesame seed roll and comes with a $3.99 price tag.   The new burgers are:

  • Deluxe – The classic cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles and red onions.
  • Mushroom & Swiss – Topped with sautéed mushrooms and swiss cheese.
  • Bacon & Cheese – Topped with bacon and red onion.

The new large sandwiches are set to compete with other oversized fast food burgers, such as Burger King’s Steakhouse Burger and Carl’s Jr’s Kentucky Bourbon Burgers.  Unfortunately we will have to wait until late summer for a nationwide release to see how it stacks up with the other premium fast food burgers on the market.  Stay Tuned!

I remember when I first heard about these being tested in California, I soooo badly wanted to try one.

I remember when the Big N’ Tasty first came out, it was actually big (about the size of a Jumbo Jack), but I shrank a few months later. Perhaps that’s the reason it didn’t become so popular. On occasion I eat one to reminisce and think of what could’ve been.

I’ll try one in a heartbeat if they come to my town, but I’m a real sucker for new fast food items. I’ll try anything new. I’m surprised it took this long for McDonald’s to get on the Angus bandwagon.

These burgers are very dry and tasteless. A big disappointment . The only one worth even trying is the bacon one. It gets some flavor from the bacon. Think my coworker summed it up the other day when he had one for the first time. “This could be the worse burger have ever had”.

At about $3.99 a burger I took a pass the last time I was at MickeDees and settled on a chicken sandwich.

  5. I think this will be good for them….I think it’ll actually be a lasting item. Remember the Mc DLT? I LOVE this ad, it’s one of my favorite:

How awesome would it be to design new menu items for fast food restaurants! I would die to do that for Taco Bell 😛

Side note….my friend one ordered the “Big ‘N Nasty” totally by mistake once.

The Angus burgers have been in SW PA for months now, I know it was before September.

I haven’t had one and I don’t have any desire to try one.

Despite the “dry and tasteless” comment above, I still have a desire to try one of these burgers. I can’t explain it, but regardless of the negative reviews a new burger may have, I still have this need to try it myself.

So weird hearing from people who are eager to try this burger. We’ve had them at every McDonalds in my area for two years and they are really nothing special.

I had the mushroom and swiss one over a year ago. I live in SoCal and didn’t realize it was just a test market. I thought it was pretty good, like a Carl’s Jr $6 burger or whatever they call it. Fortunately, my dad had buy 1 get 1 free coupons.

I only go to Mcdonald’s for a cheap meal, so I doubt I’ll ever try one. When I want a burger like that, I fire up the grill.

I remember the ‘Big N’ Tasty’. It quickly became known as the ‘Big N’ Nasty’ in my area. I think it was part of their “adult oriented” menu that failed so badly.

@ Nick T : I feel the same way about the KFC grilled chicken. Apparently, they just rolled the stuff out nationwide. But it’s been at my local KFC for months. Yet I still haven’t tried it, lol.

I wish they sold a double quarter pounder with cheese.lettuce, mayo, tomatoes and onion. It would destroy Burger King.

I tried the angus bacon burger and the angus mushrooms and swiss burger. Neither was particularly dry, but I wanted some lettuce and tomato on my burgers and my wife got me the two that come without these condiments. I guess I should have been more explicit with her. The two Angus burgers that I ate made me feel that I was being a calorie hog and I couldn’t enjoy them much because I felt that every bite I took I was consuming over 200 calories. My wife now fully understands now that I want lettuce, onion, and tomato with light mustard on my classic Angus burger in the future. That is my idea of a fine burger !!! Thanks McDonald’s !!!!
