First Impressions: New! Bacon Deluxe from Wendy’s

I’ve been sitting on this one for months folks.  It’s time for some first impressions.  On a recent visit to Columbus, Ohio I stopped by a neighborhood Wendy’s to check out what’s new.  Columbus, Ohio being the home of Wendy’s, I knew I’d be able to find an up and comer on the menu board.  Sure enough I came across a new burger that weeks later is still on my mind, the Bacon Deluxe from Wendy’s.

Wendy's Bacon Deluxe

Boasting a new Applewood smoked Bacon, the Bacon Deluxe from Wendy’s ($3.99 for a Single) was definitely a change for me.  A big burger with American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and raw onions on a soft, quality bun (I’m a fan of the buns at Wendy’s).  I worthy rival to McDonald’s Angus line.  It has been a number of years since the last time I went to Wendy’s and actually bought something bigger than a $1.50 value menu item.  I know Wendy’s has or had that Big Bacon Classic burger on the menu board for years so what’s really the big difference here?  A new name?  To me it seems like a new style of bacon (Applewood smoked) and not much else. The bacon is a smokey sweet style that is a bit thicker and fuller than the bacon put on say the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger (which uses thinner sliced hickory smoked bacon). With the Bacon Deluxe you’ve got the option for a Single for $3.99, Double for $4.99 or Triple for $5.99…and I went for the Single and it was more than enough food for my midnight craving.  The burger came along in a “Big Mac-esque” box because paper foil alone couldn’t contain it.  Absolutely delicious.  Wendy’s does a good job of bringing fresh and tasty condiments in with their burgers and it always helps the overall package.  Even at midnight this was put together well.  🙂  The beef (which spills out from the bun) wasn’t dried out as one might expect from a late night run.  Apparently everything is made to order and I believed it.  The crisp, crunch of the raw onions and lettuce…I love that about Wendy’s.  The head of the Wendy’s corporation had recently said publicly that the Bacon Deluxe will feature “juicier beef, an improved bun, bacon cooked from scratch in our stores and improved packaging.”  It’s been 5 months since my experience with the Bacon Deluxe and the memory remains, but I’m due for another taste.

Sorry for the poor picture. The lighting is never good at the witching hour...

Ah yes, the witching hour always screws stuff up. You are forgiven.

I swear this is the same as the Big Bacon Classic, but maybe with different bacon. I always loved that sandwich though, so I suppose it’s OK.

the bread looks different than the big bacon classic too. the new bread looks breadier.

@ Adam Bomb and Rob … Yeah it really isn’t too far off from the Big Bacon Classic. Bacon/Bread/Box upgrades though….(not sure ‘jucier beef’ is achieved) Seeing as though the BBC isn’t on the menu now, this is just the new replacement with a new name. Still a bacon cheeseburger. I recommend it though, especially if you liked the Big Bacon Classic. This is Big Bacon Classic 2.0.

They’ve had the BBC at my local Wendy’s as an “off the menu” item for some time now, and people could still order it. I’m wondering if they’ll quit now that the Bacon Deluxe is available.

The Big Bacon Classic was never even taken off the menu here in Canada, so I wonder if we’ll even get this burger.

So I stopped by Wendy’s today for lunch to try this new burger. While they were extremely quick about getting it to me in the drive-through, I was surprised that it did NOT come in a box! It was wrapped like the rest of their sandwiches. I was pleasantly surprised when I got back to work that the sandwich was made fairly well and hadn’t fallen apart yet. I opted for the double (no mayo, no pickle), small combo with fries and a Coke. The very first bite I took surprised me — there was a lot more bacon flavor than I expected. Most fast food burgers that have bacon them tend to have thin, bland, soggy bacon, but this was actually somewhat fresh and flavorful, and just thick enough to have good flavor without being chewy. I could have done with a bit more ketchup (and they neglected to put any in the bag!), but overall it was one of the better fast food burgers I’ve had in awhile. It was no Five Guys, but hey, what is? Also, the $7-and-change bill for this particular combo was a little steep in my opinion, but that’s why they offer a value menu I suppose!

  8. Dude. Although I’m not supposed to tell you this I don’t think, I did a taste test for a new Wendy’s Breakfast sandwich;last week and it was insanely delicious. THAT IS COMING FROM ME!! Seriously…look out for it!

@Jamie Susan: 🙁 The Wendy’s in my town hasn’t had breakfast since I was a wee lad. I kinda wish they still had it, just because I never got to try it. Can you tell us what the sandwich is??? You’ve already let half the cat out of the bag!

  10. It was a toasted artisan roll, kinda chibatta bread-ish, a fried egg (which to my glee wasn’t shaped like anything…it looked like fried egg!) two strips of really delicious pepper bacon, melted asiago cheese, and this ridiculously delicious hollandaise sauce!
It tasted like a Panera sandwhich!! Very yum!
I would eat one right now if they were around and that says a lot coming from me because I never get fast food…

There’s a Wendy’s here in Maryland with a full breakfast menu…I’ve yet to try it but it looks pretty decent….plus it’s unfortunately in a bad part of town.

This is the Big Bacon Classic with better bacon. 🙂 Since they took it off the menu, you could ask for the Baconator with only one patty of meat if you wanted a Big Bacon Classic. Can’t wait to try one.

Did you get the Bonus Bag? (At Wendy’s when they are close to closing, they give out fries indiscriminately so they don’t have to throw them out, this is known as the bonus bag. I used to do this all the time when I worked there.)

  12. Adam Bomb says:

@Aimee: I’ve gotten similar “bonus bag” type things. I’m friends with the a manager at a nearby BK, and if there’s an extra sandwich that isn’t needed, he’ll often throw it in my bag. Many of my BK/McD’s visits are late at night, and they’ll just make fresh fries when I order them. If they make too many, they’ll just upsize my fries instead of letting the extras sit and get old. Good deal!

When I used to work at Wendy’s, my coworkers and I would sometimes accidentally (on purpose!) make a sandwich the wrong way, and it would have to be tossed out. But instead of throwing it away, we’d hide it somewhere to eat on our break.

I was going to write a review, but Dan B. said everything I would (even had the same order).
I will say that their thick-cut bacon is stretching it. It’s thickER than standard ff bacon but still thin.

Is this supposed to be the new “premium” burger Wendys is rolling out this fall? If so, NOT IMPRESSED. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was a good sandwich. The lettuce and onions were so fresh and flavorful and should be envied by other fast-food places. And the BACON is the BEST of the big three. But its been touted to have a better beef. I didn’t taste it. In fact, the beef was the thing I really didn’t taste too much in this sandwich. I think Wendys hit a double w/ this burger, but they need a homerun. It really brought nothing new to the table. Hardees has had a great Thickburger for awhile. McDonalds new Angus is a completely new beast to their menu(and its pretty good), BK introduced the XL burger(not that good, sorry). Wendys Bacon Deluxe is nothing new, basically. It tastes good, but is nothing any different from what you can already get at Wendys. Honestly, Wendys’ Bacon N Bleu is more groundbreaking than this thing. What fast-food place has a Bacon N Bleu burger? That sounds like a sit-down restaurant burger at a fast-food place, but it get NO promotion. And I haven’t even tried it. But it sounds like a more upscale and enticing choice. The Bacon Deluxe tastes like every other Wendys burger.

This is not like the Big Bacon Classic, which as of a few months ago was available as an off menu item. Before the Wendy’s website pulled the Big Bacon Classic I compared the ingredients to the Bacon Deluxe on their nutritional information section. The BBC used a cheddar slice, the BD is American. The “premium bun” is different and the BBC was actually listed as using lite mayo for some reason, rather than regular. Also, obviously the bacon is different.

There might have been one or two more differences, but I went back to look it up and the info is gone. Wendy’s pulled the BBC from its site, the bun, bacon, cheese and mayo is just what I remember. Honestly, I miss the BBC. The mayo is trivial, but I prefered the cheddar cheese over American, thought the old bun was better and am not really digging the “applewood bacon”.

Used to eat Wendys way to often, like anywhere from 2-10 times a month. The BBC was what I got, every time too. Now that its gone, I tried the BD twice and just don’t care for it so I stopped going to Wendys. To bad too since that was the only late night fast food place I liked enough to go to on a regular basis.
