Food News: The Taco Bell Fresco Menu

May 19, 2009 By: James Category: Food News

Taco Bell is always adding new items to its lineup such as it’s new Volcano Big Box menu.  Most of the new Volcano items aren’t the most healthful foods but that’s fine.  You shouldn’t go into making a choice like that expecting it to be good for your diet, you should just expect something tasty.  The Volcano Double Beef Burrito leads the calorie laden way with 800 calories and a whopping 42 grams of fat.  It’s good to know that Taco Bell goes in the total opposite direction with its Fresco menu.

fresco-menu-taco-bell

There are eight offerings on the Fresco menu, 4 tacos and 4 burritos with none of the items having more than 8 grams of fat or more than 330 calories. Not bad for fast food.  The tacos and burritos on the Fresco (fresco is spanish for fresh) menu look a lot like the standard tacos and burritos of the past.  The new items simply omit the cheese and any sour cream or dressing that topped the originals.  The Fresco tacos will contain your standard meat (chicken, steak or beef), lettuce and fiesta salsa (which is basically pico de gallo), while Fresco burritos add beans, onions and in one case rice.  In my opinion, lettuce and pico de gallo is more than enough to top a taco or burrito if it includes good quality meat, but coming from a fast food spot, is it enough?  The Fresco menu looks like a tasty and healthy fast food addition to the fast food world.  This menu has been around for a while but until just recently, I’ve seen it advertised better on the Taco Bell menu boards.  If you have have given it a try let GrubGrade know how it is.

Food News: New Chipotle Menu

April 09, 2009 By: James Category: Food News

Hey out there in the Mile High City,  Chipotle has chosen you to be the guinea pig for their new menu items.  Chipotle is adding new featured items, a kid’s menu and what they call the “Low Roller Menu”.  The purpose of the changes is to simplify ordering as well as offering meals at a lower price point.  Source: FastCasual.com

Chipotle is known for their football size burritos, but the ” Low Roller Menu” will include new smaller entrees such as:

  • Soup ($2.99/3.69 with chicken) – 8 oz. cup of vegetarian soup with roasted tomatillos, tomato and hominy; with the option to add naturally raised chicken.
  • Chicken Taco & Soup ($4.65) – One soft or crispy taco made with naturally raised chicken, choice of salsa, sour cream or cheese, and lettuce, served with a cup of Soup.
  • Single Tacos ($2.25) – Crispy corn, soft flour or soft corn tortilla with a choice of naturally raised meat, salsa, sour cream or cheese, and lettuce.
  • Side Salad ($2.95/3.65 with chicken) – Chopped romaine lettuce with salsa and cheese, served with freshly-made chipotle honey-vinaigrette.

Aside from the usual burritos, burrito bowls and tacos, the new menu will include “Featured Items”  which all hover around the $6 mark such as:

  • Chicken Pozole ($5.55) – Roasted tomatillo, tomato and hominy soup served over cilantro-lime rice and topped with naturally raised grilled chicken and cheese.
  • Omnivore ($5.95) – A salad of chopped romaine lettuce with naturally raised chicken, black beans, tomato salsa and cheese. Served with freshly made chipotle-honey vinaigrette.
  • Classic Burrito ($5.95) – Naturally raised grilled chicken served in a flour tortilla with cilantro-lime rice, black beans, roasted chili-corn salsa and sour cream.
  • Carnitavore ($6.35) – A burrito bowl with naturally raised shredded pork, cilantro-lime rice, pinto beans, tomatillo green-chili salsa and cheese.

For all you parents out there who used to share your burrito with your kid because there is noway they could eat one on there own, Chipotle has finally added a kid’s menu to the lineup.  All items on the kid’s menu come in at less than $4 including a drink  It features:

  • Kid’s Meal – they build it ($3.95) – With this unique twist on a kid’s meal, Chipotle is inviting children to get creative with their food. Kids can choose any three ingredients (one naturally raised meat and then two other ingredients from the line, like salsa and cheese) and two crispy or two soft taco shells, all served on a tray. From there, it’s up to them to construct and enjoy their tacos. This Kid’s Meal also comes with rice and a small order of chips.
  • Single Taco – we build it ($3.50) – This option is especially good for families on the go. Rather than being served on the build-your-own tray, Chipotle’s crew builds single tacos using soft or crispy shells and a choice of any three items from the line. Single Tacos also come with an order of small chips.
  • Small Cheese Quesadilla ($2.95)/Small Meat & Cheese Quesadilla ($3.50) – This classic kid favorite is served with a side of rice or beans, and a small order of chips.

Chipotle is definitely one of my favorite grub spots, but I’m not sure how I feel about the changes to the menu.  I always thought the simplicity was one of its strengths.  The Chipotle’s around where I live are always packed and the limited number of choices kept the lines moving.  I think it also helps with the quality of the food.  They stick to a limited number of options and they do them well.  Let’s hope the quality of the food doesn’t suffer as the number of choices goes up.  We are counting on you, Denver, to let us know.

Featured Restaurant: Caballo Viejo Latin American Grill

March 10, 2009 By: Heather Category: Featured Restaurant

Caballo Viejo in Spanish translates to “old horse”.  What does that have to with food?  Nothing exactly- This latin american fast-casual restaurant was named for the Venezuelan song “Caballo Viejo” by Simón Díaz.  The original location of Caballo Viejo: Latin American Grill was in the Antietam Village Shopping Center on Opposumtown Pike, but a fire in February of 2007 caused a change of plans.  It is now located in the 7th Street Shopping Center in Frederick, Maryland.   Caballo Viejo was founded in 2007 by Angel Rojas of Venezuela along with his mother-in-law, Rosa Sarmiento of Colombia.

Caballo Viejo Latin Grill

Latin fusion is the best description of the food served here.  What makes this restaurant unique is the variety of menu items.  Some of the offerings include rotisserie chicken, big burritos, salads or arepas (with filling of your choice…chicken, steak, beef, chorizo and more)  The big burritos are similar to what you’d find at Chipotle, but there are specialty options such as a burrito with spicy chorizo sausage.  A few other menu items that you may not see everyday are tajadas, fried yuca or their nice selection of imported natural juice drinks. You may choose to eat inside in one of their 24 available seats or in one of the 16 outside seats during warm weather.  Watch Latin music videos or listen to Latin music as you dine in the bright, cheerful atmosphere.

Featured Restaurant: Sombrero Mexican Food

February 19, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Featured Restaurant

With 16 locations in and around San Diego, California, Sombrero is one of many mexican restaurants in the region.  Southern California is just known for great mexican food.  They’ve been serving since the summer of 1984 and have enough variety to satisfy your craving.  With so many items on the menu to choose from, the quality doesn’t take a hit.  I mean, it’s not like we’re talking fine sophisticated cuisine here…but we are talking nice, hearty portions.  Burritos, tacos, tortas you name it.  With some locations open 24 hours, you can stop by any time to fill up.

Sombrero Mexican Food

Visit during breakfast hours and sample one of their 7 breakfast burritos (try the Chorizo Breakfast Burrito) or one of their 6 breakfast plates.  Mexican food for breakfast starts a morning right at Sombrero.  Anytime you choose to come, bring your appetite.
