Food News: BK XT Steakhouse Burgers from Burger King

February 23, 2010 By: Ryan Category: Food News

All the fast food burger joints are competing for “premium” burger supremacy.  The BK XT Steakhouse Burger has been around for a while in my area, but I’m not sure about the trio you see below.  Wendy’s has their Bacon Deluxe (see our review), McDonald’s has a line of Angus Burgers (see our review) and “The King” cannot be left out of all the fun.  By the way, these BK patties are about 30% larger than the McD’s Angus Burgers.

  • Steakhouse XT Burger ($3.99): “The Steakhouse XT™ burger is all about an extra-thick, “how am I going to finish this,” seasoned beef patty topped with crisp lettuce, red-ripe tomatoes, onions, ketchup, and creamy mayo. When you order the Steakhouse XT™ burger bring your hunger. Maybe even a friend’s hunger.”
  • A.1. Steakhouse XT Burger ($4.49): “An extra-thick flame-broiled 7 oz.* beef patty topped with mayo, crispy onions, A.1.® Thick & Hearty Steak Sauce, plus American cheese, lettuce and red-ripe tomatoes. Phew. Can you handle the A.1.® Steakhouse XT™ burger?”
  • Smokey Cheddar Steakhouse XT Burger ($4.49): This burger is the “limited time only” of the bunch.  This burger features BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese and bacon as it’s main players.

Food News: BK Dollar Double Coming In April

February 19, 2010 By: Ryan Category: Food News

The $1.00 BK Dollar Double will follow the same path that the McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger took and remove one slice of cheese.  The BK Double Cheeseburger will move up to the $1.19 price mark.  Changes are supposed to happen on April 26. So is an extra slice of American cheese that much of a big deal?

Fast Food Review: Onion Rings from Burger King

December 02, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Fries/Rings/Sides, Reviews

I’ve made it clear before that I love me some onion rings.  I prefer rings over fries, but in the quick serve universe, good onion rings are hard to come by.  Fatburger has some great rings, but living on the East Coast you don’t come across a Fatburger too often.  Burger King seems to be on almost every street corner and I’ve indulged once or twice (or thrice) in my day on their offering.  While far from great, BK Onion Rings do have one important redeeming quality.  Overall, this one quality fails to make BK earn a better than average grade.

Burger King Onion RingsThe Onion Rings at Burger King are described like this:

Served hot and crispy, Onion Rings are the perfect round, tasty treat for plunging into zesty dipping sauce. Or maybe you prefer barbeque sauce? Or honey mustard? Just HAVE IT YOUR WAY®.

I think the true test of a good onion ring is it’s ability to stand alone, without assistance from sauce.  Not that a dipping sauce shouldn’t enter the picture, it’s just that an onion ring should be judged by how it tastes solo.  If you’re looking for dippers, you’ve got choices.  The Zesty Onion Ring Sauce is a ketchup/mayo/horseradish-ey tasting dip plus you always have the choice of getting some nuggets sauces (BBQ/Honey Mustard etc).  Unfortunately, BK Onion Rings are dominated by thick breading and oddball sizes that leave you wondering what you’re actually eating. The onion taste is there, but it’s an unnatural taste.  It’s as if you took just about anything deep fried and added onion flavoring to it.  You don’t bite into a BK Onion Ring and get the real onion.  You are getting an onion paste variant which is basically diced onions mixed into a batter and shaped into a ring.  It’s something that you’d find in your grocery store freezer really.  We are talking fast food here so it’s not like I’m expecting a whole lot, but there is a redeeming quality that I mentioned before.  My absolute favorite menu item at Burger King is the Rodeo Cheeseburger. Basically a plain cheeseburger topped with BBQ sauce and BK Onion Rings.  It’s a great combination and a really good, cheap fast food burger.  The Onion Rings just work with that burger.  They aren’t that good “standing alone”, but they are a great complement. Ordering a side of rings with a Rodeo Cheeseburger is sometimes the move I make…adding a couple more rings into the burger doesn’t hurt.  :)

BK Rodeo Cheeseburger and Onion Rings

BK Onion Rings in action...doing what they were put here on Earth to do.

Maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on these rings.  I mean, people must love them because they are popular enough to be made into a snack food item.  Like I said before, these Onion Rings are awesome with the Rodeo Cheeseburger, but really have a tough time standing alone.  Not enough dipping sauces in the world can change what it is.  Mediocre.

  • Pros: Works great in a Rodeo Cheeseburger.
  • Cons: Heavily breaded, processed and lacking that real onion taste.

Food News: Burger King Double Cheeseburger Is Now Just $1.00

October 19, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Food News

The day has come…The Double Cheeseburger from Burger King is now a value menu item for just $1.00.  I reported late last month that October 19th was the day so time to gather up your pennies.  The BK Double Cheeseburger is a hefty quarter pound of beef and it’s just a buck?  Are you kidding me?  I bought one last month for $3.19!  I’m liking the burger wars.

Food News: Burger King Double Cheeseburger for $1.00

September 25, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Food News

The Double Cheeseburger from Burger King is getting a new price nationwide starting Monday, October 19th.  A quarter pound of beef for just $1.00.  Take that McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger!  Take that Wendy’s Double Stack!  Earlier this week we battled Burger King and McD’s to see who reigns supreme in the Double Cheeseburger Wars.  A little customization and a solid $1.00 price tag should help BK gain some points.  Although it remains to be seen how long the $1.00 price will actually last.  The regular price of the Double Cheeseburger, as of earlier this week at my local BK, was a staggering $3.19.

Fast Food Review: Crown-Shaped Chicken Tenders from Burger King

August 25, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Chicken, Reviews

I’m too much of a glutton to hit up some fast food and get a meal consisting of just chicken nuggets.  To me, nuggets are reserved for that little extra bit grub to fill me up.  Since I consider nuggets as more of a side item than anything else, I’m always happy to see them on a value menu.  Burger King has a pretty good value meal with such offerings as a Whopper Jr. or a Spicy Chick’n Crisp Sandwich for just $1.00 each.  On the bite-sized chicken front, Burger King offers up a decent deal with their Crown-Shaped Chicken Tenders.

Burger King Crown-Shaped Chicken Tenders

Now just because these chicken tenders are shaped like crowns doesn’t mean I’m against buying them.  I enjoy fun shaped food such as Dino-Nuggets and yeah I’m 28 years old.  At least there is a bit of creativity going on that separates the BK tender from the competition.  Honestly though, it’s not like these crown-shaped tenders are just reserved for Kid’s Meals.  You can get a 4-piece for just a buck from the value menu so how can you pass up 25¢ per chicken tender? Fast Food Review: Angry Tendercrisp Chicken Sandwich from Burger King

August 06, 2009 By: John Category: Chicken, Reviews, Sandwiches

Late last year, Burger King came out with the Angry Whopper.  As everyone probably knows, it was a spicier Whopper with a few extra ingredients added in.  It was only a matter of time before “Angry” was put in front of a chicken sandwich.  So here it is, the Burger King Angry Tendercrisp Chicken Sandwich.

Angry Tendercrisp Chicken Sandwich from Burger King

The “Angry” brand takeover of the Tendercrisp Chicken Sandwich is a bold step for Burger King and they describe the fiery sandwich like this:

Tender, premium breaded white meat chicken filet topped with sizzling bacon, Pepper Jack cheese, deliciously spicy jalapenos, angry onions and our signature angry sauce. It’s a TENDERCRISP® with a kick.

Just to recap, they list six ingredients, but they leave out the mayo, lettuce, tomato, and bun.  So if you’re counting the bun, there is ten ingredients in this sandwich!  There is quite a bit to like about the sandwich, but there is also quite a bit that wasn’t so great.  Let’s go into more detail as to what worked and what didn’t.

Angry Tendercrisp from Burger King (open)

What worked:  Chicken was great!  It was nice and crispy, and wasn’t dry.  With so much going on with this sandwich I was pleased that I could also taste the chicken.  Although there was quite a bit of mayo on the sandwich, the mixture of mayo and Angry sauce made an interesting combination, one that I would enjoy having again.  The tomatoes were quite fresh tasting, and the crispy onions were flavorful and a great crunchy addition to the sandwich.

What didn’t work: Where’s the heat?  This sandwich is supposed to be on fire!  I am one who can tolerate quite a bit of heat, but come on… this sandwich barely registered any heat at all.  This thing needs a bit more anger to it.  We’ve discussed several times before about Burger King bacon lacking flavor so I had to point this out…I did not notice the bacon until I actually looked at the sandwich! The pepper jack cheese flavor was lacking as well.  While the tomatoes tasted great, there were too many.  Two slices fell out of the sandwich.  Perhaps one large slice would be better.  This sandwich is very messy, from mayo oozing out to tomatoes falling out… get your napkins ready.

I could barely hold onto the sandwich without ingredients falling out!

It’s a tough call on the GrubGrade score because the sandwich is supposed to have heat, but lacks any.  However, there were ingredients that went well together (mayo, angry sauce, chicken, crispy onions).  I’d hate to give it an ‘average’ or below because I did enjoy some of the flavors.  I’d say try this one over the Angry Whopper for the simple fact that the main ingredient in the Tendercrisp is much more flavorful and noticeable compared to the burger.  Make fun of me all you want, but this was the first sandwich in a long time where I didn’t know if I would be able to finish it.  There are so many ingredients and flavors, and sadly some of them do fail to make an impact.  Overall, Burger King has an decent sandwich here, but it’s not for those with smaller stomachs or people really looking for a ton of heat.

  • Pros:  Tasty, crisp chicken.  Nice flavor to the Angry sauce and mayo mixed.  Fresh tomatoes.  Crispy onions.  Huge sandwich.
  • Cons: Underwhelming heat.  Subpar BK Bacon.  Cheese lacked flavor.  Messy.  Some ingredients get lost.  1030 calories and 61 grams of fat.
