Review: The Philly Cheesesteak Thickburger from Hardee’s

Today was a hard day at work. A typical return from time off, it seems the gods of fate were actively enforcing Murphy’s Law. A friend of mine and I like to joke on days like this that we’re “Eating our feelings” because we’re hopelessly addicted to fast food and the like.  I decided to go out for lunch because I had a lot of feelings and I was serious about eating them. It’s no secret I love Thickburgers and at Hardee’s you can “EAT LIKE YOU MEAN IT.” So I did… the Philly Cheesesteak Thickburger.

Philly Cheesesteak ThickburgerHardee’s describes their Philly Cheesesteak Thickburger like this:

Thinly sliced Steak with melted Swiss and grilled Peppers ‘n Onions all on top of our 1/3lb. Thickburger® with cheese, served on a Fresh Baked Bun.

I had a glorious little 2 for 1 coupon so of course I got two burgers. Please don’t judge me. I needed a pick-me-up and this lunch was just that.  $3.69 was the price for the 1/3 pounder.

Philly ThickburgerFirst off, the new buns are awesome and are true to their name. The bun was exceedingly fresh, with a light buttery taste on the crust and a slight sweetness inside. The steak was indeed thinly sliced and was so tasty I had to stop and savor it. Juicy and packed with a delectable flavor, I instantly fell in love.

Philly Cheesesteak Thickburger Hardee'sAs a Philly cheese steak enthusiast I was skeptical but Hardee’s came through for me. Some places have fatty meat in their Phillies. Sometimes the meat will be tough and/or greasy. None of that unappetizing crap here. The grilled peppers and onions complemented the savory steak perfectly and the almost gooey melted Swiss added just the right amount of cheesy goodness. The burger patty was wonderfully delicious as always, thoroughly cooked and well-seasoned.  Of course it was.

Hardees Philly BurgerHardee’s Thickburgers are normally a little expensive for my taste because I’m kind of cheap and I have to grub on a budget, but even without the coupon I would consider this a good buy. I would also buy it again. And again. I can actually see this burger becoming a permanent addition to the Hardee’s menu. The high quality of the ingredients combined with how well the flavors blended together earned this burger a special place in my heart (and arteries).  I highly recommend the Philly Cheesesteak Thickburger, and for once I’m unable to suggest any additions or substitutions to improve the sandwich. That says it all, doesn’t it?

Pros: All of it. I loved this burger.

Cons: Thickburgers can get pricey.

Holy HELL! With those calories and fat, it better be phenomenal. Too bad I don’t have a Hardees near me.

Great review. Would love to try it but I doubt you can order it without peppers and onions.

Why wouldn’t you be able to order it without peppers and onions? I imagine they would let you.

      • JF says:

In general, I would agree. However this is listed as a “Philly Cheesesteak Blend” which would allude to the fact that it’s already mixed together prior to arriving at each store. You can see this in the nutrition calculator which otherwise would list the steak, peppers and onions as individual ingredients if they truly were separate.

I would also like to try this without the peppers and onions. I’ve also been wanting to try the breakfast burritos at McDonald’s and Burger King, but i think the filling is premixed for those too isn’t it?

The breakfast burritos at McDonald’s are pre-mixed, but I always order mine with just egg and cheese, they will make it that way for you too. I don’t like their sausage, so they make them for me with just the scrambled egg and cheese.

I JUST had one for the first time, too and I couldn’t agree more! Yummy! The closest Hardee’s is about 20 miles from me on the toll road, so I probably won’t get another anytime in the near future, but as long as they keep it, I’ll get it next time I travel that way. Not to mention at almost 1000 calories per burger, my jeans wouldn’t like it if I got it too often.

I agree with this review 99%! The one thing I would disagree with is the comment about not suggesting anything to add to it. Jalapeno’s. At the Green Burrito/Carl’s Jr. combo restaurants they have a little “salsa” bar with jalapenos available that you can just grab and add to anything you order. =)

I haven’t tried this one yet, but those buns are the real deal, going for my third one on Sunday

When I first saw this add, even after putting my hatred of TO aside, I still didn’t think it sounded very good. But after further consideration, and based on your review, I ordered one of these tonight, and I was pleasantly surprised. The individual tastes all meld together rather well, I didn’t pull it apart, though we did cut it in half, but I didn’t see any onions, the peppers were there though. The $6 thickburger at Carl’s Jr goes for $5.69 around here (NorCal), and I’d order it again

I hope this doesn’t become a mainstay on the menu. I would end up going to Carl’s Jr way too much. Also they need to bring back the Pastrami burger too while they’re at it as a LTO.

  7. Jonathan Wayne says:

This looks decent. Sadly the Carl’s Jr. that is near me has taken to serving charred, dry, old pieces of meat in the last 6 months and I can no longer frequent that place. The new buns are good though, although as a whole, Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr pricing is out of control, why wouldn’t you just go to a proper restaurant, which might be why their parking lot is always empty?

I’m in Mich, Kalamazoo – nearest Hardee’s is 20 miles by Battle Creek (if this means anything to anyone), anyway I wouldn’t call $3.70 “pricey” for this burger. It’s a nice little treat. Like all their burgers it is made fresh and it almost seems like they care, you get a little placard and go sit down and wait 5-7 mins for a steamy fresh hot burger brought to you from a smiling person. But maybe because this is a truck stop they go the extra mile to please, dunno. Hardee’s just makes me happy, even if I wait an extra minute and pay an extra buck. Swiss on grilled peppers/onions on burger on good bun = Yummersbergs for 4 bones. Grab some onion rings to put it over the top.

Great review. Thanks! I am biased, but this is one of my favorite meat-on-meat burgers at Carl’s.

I haven’t had this burger in the past when it was on the menu as an LTO, and it was very good from what I can remember. Here in PA, we don’t have too many Hardee’s around any longer sadly enough. The close one, and only one for that matter, is about 20 minutes from me. That being said I have a friend who lives close to it so anytime I’m over that way I stop. The biscuits are so damn good and the burgers are also pretty awesome these days. I agree the pricing is a bit high for fast food, but the quality it pretty good and they often have great deals and coupons so that helps one’s wallet considerable. I recently saw that Hardee’s/Carls JR is once again in expansion mode so hopefully PA is on their list (Hardee’s that is). For those of you who have bad memories of Hardee’s (the quality used to be terrible) or have never tried it, I highly recommend it as it is easily one of the better, and highly underrated, fast food joints around.

Congrats Ryan….Hardee’s plugged this review on facebook.

  12. Just had this sandwich today for the 1st time. Wow, what taste. Incredible. I don’t care for onions. The lady at Hardees told me they could not make it without onions however I wouldn’t taste them very much. She’s correct, not much onion taste at all. My best sandwich ever (I believe). However at 920 calories, not a sandwich to have everyday. (I ordered a diet coke – for balance, :-)

JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW !!
The milkshakes only fill half the cup . You pay 3.17 for half a cup of whip cream ! Test it out ! Go to hardees on the days the owner works (because we kindly fill them up with the needed ice cream on the nights he doesn’t work) either Monday or Thursday and order a shake without whip cream … You’ll be shocked what you’re paying for. And worst of all…our cooks tend to forget gloves alot of the time. The owner also picks out of the fries all day (as he pleases) he just sticks his dirty hands right on in there. The next time you go to use the soda machines , do yourself a favor and wipe the nozzle with your finger…black goo everywhere. (Hardee’s in ft.myers FL)
