Review: Smoky BBQ Cheddar Burger from Checkers
I have some do’s and don’ts when it comes to a BBQ burger. The new Smoky BBQ Cheddar Burger from Checkers got a bunch of check marks on the “don’t” side of things. Sigh, let’s review.
The most you’re going to get out of a description for the Smoky BBQ Cheddar Burger from Checkers is “topped with tangy barbecue sauce and melty cheese.” Well from the promo picture I gathered a couple of other key components… breaded fried onions (do) and lettuce (don’t). What good is a list of do’s and don’ts when not much of anything worked?
The Smoky BBQ Cheddar Burger is advertised as a $1 burger. Of course prices and participation will vary, but I almost never encounter lack of participation with nationally advertised prices except for when Wendy’s is involved. This burger was indeed $1 at my local Checkers, but that’s if you buy 3… or any 3 of the “Bold Trio” sandwiches which also includes the the Fry Lover’s Burger and Spicy Chicken Sandwich. So mix and match the trio of choices and it’s three bucks. It’s a good deal, but I only wanted one burger so that came out to $1.79. Under 2 bucks for a fast food burger is still OK with me. Being critical about value after spending spare change for a burger is tough even when the burger failed.
So the rundown of ingredients: “smoky” BBQ sauce, cheddar, beef patty, breaded fried onions, shredded iceberg lettuce, sesame seed bun. The BBQ sauce wasn’t smoky at all and there was no evidence of tanginess or spice. There was nothing bold about the BBQ sauce and it really added nothing but sweetness to the burger. The sauce couldn’t avoid being one-dimensional and that’s a shame because Checkers has done BBQ burgers in the past and the sauce didn’t seem as weak as this turned out. With the BBQ sauce out of the way let’s turn to an even bigger disappointment… the cheddar. The cheddar is a cheddar sauce that made this relatively small burger a big mess to eat. The cheddar sauce mixes with the BBQ sauce and just becomes a wet disaster. A slice of cheddar would’ve been a lot better here. The words “wet disaster” means your breaded fried onions will likely suffer and these definitely suffered in a big way. Absolutely nothing redeeming about the fried onions. Maybe they were crisp and hot before they made it into this burger, but they didn’t stand a chance with runny cheese sauce and BBQ sauce dripping everywhere. On to the shredded iceberg lettuce, is there a more pointless burger topping than shredded iceberg lettuce? Shredded iceberg lettuce is another “don’t” for me by the way, especially in a BBQ burger. I’m assuming the sesame seed bun and seasoned burger patty were decent before everything else ruined the burger.
The Smoky BBQ Cheddar Burger would probably still be mediocre without the cheddar sauce. The cheddar sauce made a mediocre fast food burger a failure. Most everything was borderline subpar and the annoying cheese sauce can’t help but touch every crevice of the burger. Sure it’s cheap, but most everything at Checkers is pretty inexpensive. So the silver lining here is to just seek out other cheap Checkers options.
Pros: Priced at $1.00 at participating locations.
Cons: BBQ sauce was sweet and needed to be balanced with something tangy/spicy. Cheddar sauce envelopes everything. Sloppy. Shredded iceberg lettuce is very unnecessary in a BBQ burger.
