Review: Montreal Steak Burger from Checkers

It’s been over a year since I last reviewed something from Checkers and that’s not entirely on me.  The LTO’s at Checkers/Rally’s haven’t been released with much consistency lately, but now that 2015 is coming to an end, there’s a new burger now available… the Montreal Steak Burger.
Montreal Steak BurgerThe new Montreal Steak Burger features a hamburger patty topped with Montreal seasoned shaved steak, Montreal seasoned mayo, lettuce, sliced red onions, a slice of Swiss cheese and crispy onion tanglers on a toasted bun.  This burger is being advertised for $1.99 and I’m happy to say my local Checkers had it priced for $1.99.Montreal Steak Burger CheckersThe “Montreal” name comes from McCormick’s Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning which is used on the shaved steak and the mayo.  This seasoning is a blend of salt, ground red and black pepper, garlic, paprika and other spices.  Even though there’s not a lot of shaved steak in this sandwich, the smoky seasoning flavors come through and that’s likely due to plenty of mayo.  And speaking of not a lot of shaved steak, check out the promo picture… mine definitely didn’t look this stacked.  The Montreal Steak Seasoning takes over the flavor of the entire burger and I wasn’t too crazy about that.  I think just seasoning the shaved steak and leaving the mayo out of it would’ve improved things. Montreal Steak Burger CheckersI found the shredded lettuce to be completely pointless and became slaw-like with all the flavored mayo.  I love Checkers crispy onion tanglers, but there were maybe two rings tops.  Also for some reason sliced red onions were also included which takes away from any impact the crispy onions would have had.  Normally in a burger that goes overboard with ingredients (like this one), the cheese is lost.  Unfortunately the cheese in this burger wasn’t lost.  The slice of Swiss used is a processed Swiss American style that really tastes unnatural.  The bun wasn’t very toasty and without a thorough enough toasting, the dry flaws are exposed so much more.
Montreal CheckersSince the Montreal Steak Burger is only $1.99, it’s tough to complain about how much I want my money back but I’ll do it anyway.   Save yourself 50 cents and just get the All-American Cheeseburger which achieves a lot more with so much less.  I know American cheese, ketchup, mustard and pickles aren’t going to be overly impressive, but at least they’re palatable.

Pros: Won't put much of a dent in your wallet at just $1.99.

Cons: Too much Montreal seasoning left the flavors unbalanced. Garbage lettuce. Not enough crispy onions.

When I tried this burger it just tasted of salt and red onions. The only good take away from it was the crispy onions.

I literally, no joke, got food poisoning from my local Rally’s/Checker this Thursday, still not 100% yet. Their food was never the best but I am finally done with them. Their food was already a subpar salt bomb, but it has reached new lows now.

That burger looked so good on the promo, but you see the small amount of meat on it and it makes me 🙁

Shame, Checkers is unique since for cheap you can often get good sloppy LTOs that aren’t just a re-purposing of some signature condiment. Worth getting some of the orange spicy-crispy fries too.

Your review seems to verify something that keeps biting me from Checkers/Sonic.

Had their little buck-and-a-half spicy chicken a couple times and I can only speculate one of two options: A) the cook poured salt all over the patty, or B) this is how the patty comes from the factory. They come *whoa* overthetop salty. The first time I thought it was an accident or sabotage or something.

But otherwise I tried their Big Chicken (bigger deluxe version but still cheap patty) and it was great for what it is, with the texas toast and all.

Otherwise love Checkers, sounds like this Montreal burger suffers from the same seasoning issue

I don’t have Checkers/Rally near me but for $1.99 I would eat that. I love salt. LOL!

You’re wrong about this one, Ryan. While it certainly doesn’t show up near the top of the all time best LTO’s from Rally’s, it’s still more than decent. Of course, it probably helps to have more than 2 onions on it, like yours. Honestly, the steak is the weak link in this burger, I’d much prefer a second burger patty. But Rally’s may make the best grilled onions in the fast food business, that and the crispy onions definitely stand out. But the best part of the sandwich is the mayo, always ask for extra.

    I don’t have a Checkers / Rally’s near me.

But when I saw Montreal I thought poutine. So disappointed by what this turned out to be. I do think a poutine burger would be awesome.
