Review: Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos from Burger King
With “premium” menu items still consistently littering menus these days, it’s always a nice change of pace to go the not-so-serious route. In 2016, the headline-grabbing novelty of Burger King’s Mac n’ Cheetos (review) kept the fun alive in a world of fast food chains trying too hard to be more mature. The latest offering from BK is an extension of that idea with the introduction of new Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos.Burger King describes new Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos like this:
Introducing FLAMIN’ HOT® MAC N’ CHEETOS®. A unique portable snack of creamy mac n’ cheese coated and dusted with the flavor of CHEETOS® crunchy FLAMIN’ HOT® cheese snacks. Do you dare?
Yes I dare. So yeah, pretty much we’re dealing with spicy mozzarella sticks here. My favorite part of Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos was the crisp, hearty exterior that does a great job at keeping the mac n’ cheese interior intact. There’s very little mess and grubbing on the go is not an issue at all. The insides weren’t too impressive and reminded me of my childhood where I’d take too long to eat my macaroni and cheese and it became this pasta trapped in a semi-solid paste. Flavor-wise, Flamin’ Mac n’ Cheetos was less about cheesy and more about spicy. I’d give them a solid 6 on the heat scale (everyone’s tolerance will vary so save your comments). Beyond the packaging (which I liked), this product also struggled to make me think “Cheetos”.
At a price of $2.99 for five pieces, Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos is a slightly mediocre value. Considering that you can fill up on more food for less money on BK’s value menu, this product has to rely a lot more on its gimmick. Since the novelty points go more towards the original by default, I can’t help but see the value of this product to take a hit. That said, if you were into the original and like your food spicy, the price won’t be much of a factor. In closing, new Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos from Burger King are an eh/OK spicy side item to add to an order. Burger King keeps the LTO’s coming quite frequently so it’s interesting to see what comes next. Too bad the novelty of Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos wore off after the original.
Pros: Crisp exterior. Spicy option. Grubbing on the go.
Cons: Subpar interior. Flavor isn't very reminiscent of Cheetos.
Grubbing on-the-go: 7.75/10
Overall GrubGrade: 5.25/10
