Review: Cheesy Bacon Bowl from KFC

I think people are shocked by the Cheesy Bacon Bowl from KFC because it might make us think of animals and troughs.  You know, like one of those pig troughs where the swine stuff their snouts into a big mess of everything?  When you take out the individual parts from the Cheesy Bacon Bowl, it doesn’t really seem so horrific.  Or does it?  Well, that’s for you to decide.  I found the power animal inside and summoned my inner pig and purchased the Cheesy Bacon Bowl for this GrubGrade review.

The name “Cheesy Bacon Bowl” itself does have some impact.  The thought of a bowl filled with bacon and cheese really does sound like a chest-clutching heart attack waiting to happen.  The Cheesy Bacon Bowl from KFC really isn’t as scary as you might imagine.  Think about it… when you mix everything from last nights dinner and stuff it into a bowl, you’re sure to come up with some odd concoctions.  If we’re speaking bowls of food then I could say I recently had a “Macaroni and Cheese Meatloaf Corn Bread Bowl”.  Yum!  The point is, when you take out the fact that the food is conveniently packaged together and you’re given a fork to dig in, the idea of it isn’t too bad.  You’ve got mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, a three-cheese blend, bacon and fried morsels of boneless chicken.  All spread out on a plate you might think it’s a decently balanced meal.  Mashed potatoes, cheese and bacon together would in itself provide a loaded-mashed potatoes of sorts…. then some sweet corn and chicken to round it out.  Not too bad.

So did I like the Cheesy Bacon Bowl?  I thought it was mediocre, but I’d recommend throwing in a biscuit for good measure.  Hmmm… a Cheesy Bacon Biscuit Bowl sounds more like it.  But where does the KFC coleslaw fit in?  I felt everything in my Cheesy Bacon Bowl was layered together nicely but seemed to consist mostly of mashed potatoes and a fair serving of popcorn chicken.  Adding bacon to provide an even more salty meal was a sodium-laden touch that I could’ve done without.  The bowl smells of bacon as soon as you peel back the plastic resealable lid.  I wish KFC would come out with a chunkier style of mashed potatoes.  Maybe with the skins still on and a thicker texture I’d feel the main component of the Cheesy Bacon Bowl would’ve been more my style.

The Cheesy Bacon Bowl is not really my thing.  Like Taco Bell, it’s just familiar ingredients packaged in a new way with a new name.  I’ll admit a little embarrassment from ordering the bowl and shuffling away to my cave like Gollum and his Precious.  If someone asked me what I had for lunch today, I’d most likely feel ashamed to say the KFC Cheesy Bacon Bowl.

Pros: Nice variety of foods in one package. Lots of food for the price. Add a biscuit to the mix... why not? Packaging.

Cons: Time to update your mashed potatoes KFC. Heavy. Cheesy Bacon Bowl might have some rushing to the Toilet Bowl.

This really does look good, particularly considering I just paid $4.29 for a 10 chicken McNuggets (which really left me saying, WTF? Not a combo, just the nuggets)

I’ve kind of been let down by KFC’s ‘real’ chicken lately, but for some reason their other stuff is still pretty damn good.

Mike, I’m not sure how much you eat, but if you can eat a 20 piece you should check that out. I was out driving within this past week and decided to swing by McDonalds and the 10-piece was $3.99 while the 20-piece was only $4.99.

So they can bring out crap like this but won’t bring back the original Chicken Little?

  7. Jason says:

Looks good? Are you out of your mind?

Looks like vomit in a bowl.
Doesn’t look good, doesn’t sound good and it’s like stomach cancer in a bowl. To me this thing would give me hartburn and feel like crap the rest of the day.

Don’t do it, go home have a sandwich.

Does the bowl play a song by This Mortal Coil as you’re eating?

Depressing food if I’ve ever seen it

While depressed people turn to ice cream, manic people turn to the KFC Cheesy Bacon Bowl.

I felt kinda sad by the end of the review.

thanks to your website I went out and bought a cheesy bacon bowl for myself today.

I thought it was a great meal, especially with a biscuit thrown in.

Thank you for actually saying something about it after you ate it, instead of all these people just automatically knocking it.

This is the exact thing a person can order and begin to wonder if they made sound life decisions.

  13. Thomas says:

I remember that I used to like the original bowls without bacon. I guess they are trying to play on the old bacon fad, but that is a bad reason to add bacon to a dish.

This container is terrible and so cheap.

Looks delicious! Can’t wait to try it…although I, too, would be embarrassed to admit it to my coworkers! :)

KFry Exec: Sales of our Hot Barf Bowl are down. What are we going to do? I know! Put bacon on it! People will eat anything with bacon on it.

Note to KFry exec: if it looks like Sunday morning Toilet Stew from your college days, it’s still a hot Barf Bowl, it doesn’t matter how much bacon you put on it.

as someone who normally mixes her mashed potatoes with everything but the kitchen sink..this is appealing..I’ve had the other bowls (frankly I prefer the cream gravy as their regular gravy is like thickened brown salt water to me), but it can’t be worse than the original bowl which isn’t bad. I don’t think their “new” popcorn chicken is all that though. I prefer Sonic’s.

  18. SmoledMan says:

Oh great – another failure pile in a sadness bowl.

  19. I Ate it says:

I ate this late night last night. It is a good amount of food for your buck. I was most disappointed with the gravy which added zero flavor and hundreds of calories. (Who’s counting tho?) The potatoes would benefit from a thicker consistency but I would argue the gravy is the bigger problem. Unless I had a morsel of chicken, the bite was bland. Thankfully I picked this up from a KFC/Taco Bell combo and was able to snag fire sauce which really kicked the flavor up.
