Review: Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal from McDonald’s
One of the most important posts I’ve ever written on GrubGrade was about McDonald’s making an attempt at oatmeal. I was lucky enough to live in a test market and tried it back in 2009. Since the success of McDonald’s Fruit and Maple Oatmeal, many other quick-serve restaurants have followed suit. Chick-fil-A now has oatmeal. Burger King jumped on board with their own oatmeal. Starbucks and Panera, among others, also do oatmeal. Oatmeal for breakfast is definitely a growing trend in fast food and recently, McDonald’s debuted a new flavor of oatmeal and I just tried it… Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal.
McDonald’s describes their Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal like this:
Made with the juicy goodness of fresh blueberries, two full servings of natural whole grain oats, a satisfying crunch of premium walnuts and a hint of banana, it’s the perfect start for your busy day.
I don’t normally go for fast food during breakfast hours (unless of course Chick-n-Mini’s are involved). The option of oatmeal wouldn’t necessarily draw me to stop in at McDonald’s, but just knowing it’s there amongst a sea of greasy sausage patties and biscuits would compel me enough to choose it over a potential stomachache.
The Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal is served up in a decent sized container and weighs in at a little over half a pound. It’s 290 calories and that’s not at all a bad thing considering it’s filling enough to keep me going for a couple of hours. Walnuts (40 calories) are supplied in a little plastic bag taped to the oatmeal container. The oatmeal is your standard fare and the blueberries are plump and very plentiful. With my first and my last bite, a blueberry was on my spoon. So in terms of balance, my Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal was perfection. The banana flavor of the oatmeal wasn’t at all overwhelming and that was a big plus. When you have a good amount of blueberries in the mix, you’re better off not challenging the flavors too much. At $2.49, McDonald’s Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal is pricier than the original Fruit and Maple version. With the glut of blueberries, the 50-cent price hike seemed reasonable.
An oatmeal option for breakfast is just fine with me. It’s something you won’t be riddled with guilt for eating I’m sure. Most will say, “If I’m doing fast food, I’m not looking for oatmeal”… but being short on time is something our society is used to and if we have good and bad choices to make, at least the good choice is available. I liked the original Fruit & Maple Oatmeal a lot and the Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal is even better. I recommend it.
Pros: Lots of blueberries. Subtle banana flavor works with a blueberry in every bite. Under 300 calories breakfast.
Cons: I'm sure a lot of people will scoff at paying $2.49 for oatmeal.
