Review: Beefy Nacho Burrito from Taco Bell

The last couple of months in the world of Taco Bell has been dominated by Doritos Locos Tacos.  We’ve been bombarded with print ads and tv spots advertising the taco with a Doritos shell.  The hype campaign surrounding Doritos Locos Tacos is something that was to be expected since this was somewhat of a major game changer in the quick-serve industry.  So other than the press and push of the well deserved Doritos Locos Tacos, I’ve been quietly sitting back waiting for the next “new” promotion.  The 5-week rotation of promotional products skipped a turn, but now 10 or so weeks later, we’ve got a new burrito to sink our teeth into.  Debuting today at Taco Bell, the Beefy Nacho Burrito.

The Beefy Nacho Burrito is described by Taco Bell like this:

Bite into crunchy nacho chips, covered in warm nacho cheese sauce, delicious 100% real seasoned beef, and cool reduced-fat sour cream, all wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla for maximum portability.

It’s tough to ask for anything more from this combination of ingredients in a Taco Bell burrito, but I felt the Beefy Nacho Burrito fell a little bit short of greatness.  Back in December 2010, Taco Bell released the Beefy Crunch Burrito and I graded it a 7.25/10.  The Beefy Crunch Burrito, in my opinion, will still be superior to this latest offering.  Both burritos have/had promo prices of 99-cents, great deal.  Both burritos have seasoned ground beef.  Both burritos have nacho cheese.  Both burritos have sour cream.

Where the differences come into play are surrounding the fact that the Beefy Crunch Burrito also had rice and a more flavorful and substantial crunch with the inclusion of the Flamin’ Hot Fritos.  This latest creation uses new Queso Strips, which are a bit lighter in texture and don’t pack the snap and heat of the Fritos.  While the Queso Strips are indeed a welcome addition to a standard beef burrito, they didn’t quite live up to Hot Fritos. The crunch was there, but not substantial enough.  Five minutes after placing my order I ate the Beefy Nacho Burrito and I could already tell the crunch was bogged down with a soggy texture.  Overall, the ingredients work well together, yet I felt it was missing a little extra something.  I know you can customize your tastes with Border Sauce packets, but as it stands alone, the Beefy Nacho Burrito would’ve benefited from a different flavored cheese sauce or a cheese-blend.  Like its name, “Nacho” comes through and through.  Typically, I like my nachos with a little bit more than just the standards.  Maybe diced jalapenos would have made this stand above.

At 99-cents, the nearly 7-oz Beefy Nacho Burrito is a steal.  It didn’t quite live up to the Beefy Crunch Burrito (which had a few issues of its own), but it holds up as a nice change of pace promotional item to keep us busy until the next wave of Doritos Locos creations hit the menu board

Pros: Only 99-cents. Good size. Cheesy.

Cons: Beefy Crunch Burrito is superior to the Beefy Nacho Burrito. Missing one ingredient, take your pick. Crunch was lacking.

    FIRST!

But I won’t be first, second or last to try this burrito. Pass!

Nooooo! Let’s please not start saying first! Every time I read “first”, it kills me a little inside.

Alright I did try this and it was actually OK and I would buy it again.

I’m normally not a Taco Bell fan, but I’ll give this a shot. I really like small/value items from fast food restaurants that carry me over until dinner or that I can eat late at night without stuffing myself. As far as what I expect, not that much because it’s Taco Bell. But I do admit the Beefy Crunch Burrito as stated in the review was surprisingly pretty good. However, nothing tops my personal Taco Bell favorite – Cheesy Gordita Crunch with chicken and a Doritos Locos shell :D

Exactly what I’d expected, everything short of being even roughly different than their other chip-stuffed burritos.

Also, Special is really funny in this context, it’s the same context that children’s programs use to tell kids they can do anything they want because the world’s a free place.

I went to TB last nite just for this and they didnt have this yet in my town.

    I was disappointed.

  5. […] = 480; google_ad_height = 60; Coming this week to Taco Bell, the new Beefy Nacho Burrito (UPDATE: Read our FULL REVIEW).  Looks to be a standard beef burrito with chips and melted cheese.  This is the first […]

I think I’ll give this a try. I agree with all of their LTO’s are just rearranging existing ingredients. But the price is a steal as long as the quantity is there.

  7. Ted says:

It puzzles me that none of the taco chains have tried to offer a “low carb” tortilla as an option like Taco Bell’s Fresco menu. I would frequent Taco Bell often if they had a low carb tortilla instead of the standard monster

  8. Chefprotoss says:

They should bring back the original grilled stuft burrito. Extra baja sauce = win.

  9. John says:

Am I the only one who just really didn’t find the Doritos taco that exciting?

I tried a few on different occasions, and never really got the Doritos flavor. It tasted quite similar to their regular hard taco, only it made my fingers orange.

I tried one of these yesterday. After ten weeks of the over-hyped Doritos Locos taco – which is old news here in Toledo because we were a test market – I was curious when they would finally get on to a new promo item. Not being a huge fan of super-spicy fritos, this burrito was perfect for me. Taco Bell’s nacho cheese is borderline addictive, and sometimes I wish they put it on everything. I agree that the 99 cent price point makes the Beefy Nacho Burrito a good deal.

  11. Andi says:

I tried it myself too today. I kinda liked it… But yeah, it was nowhere near the quality of the Beefy Crunch Burrito. Will prolly have it again while it’s on promo.

  12. Neko says:

Also the Beefy Crunch Burrito had rice in it as well to make it more filling. When I had the Beefy Nacho Burrito, I didn’t get much of anything except mostly chips. I’ll give it another chance though.

  13. Jesse says:

I gave this a shot today, my local TB had it for $1.29.. leases must be expensive in these parts (Seattle).

The cheese strips were narrower and longer than the picture makes them look, maybe 2/3rds the width of a frito. I pulled on out and it was indeed quite cheesey, albeit fake kraft cheesey. My strips stayed crisp but I ate the thing in roughly three seconds.

I thought it was pretty good, though next time I’d probably sub the sour cream for more nacho cheese sauce.

I’ll buy this one again. But after I get what I originally went to TB fortoday, a double decker supreme; sub doritos shell and sub sour cream for the nacho cheese sauce. I’m drooling just thinking about it.

My favorite in this line of cheap nacho cheesey burritos was the ‘Cheesey Double Beef Burrito’ which indeed seem have more “meat”, along with rice and the requisite nacho cheese sauce. I miss that one -a lot-.

  14. Jon says:

Tried one yesterday, rather meh. Maybe the person who made it was over zealous with the sour cream because that was all I tasted. Still, for 99 cents I’ll probably get it again but I’ll skip the sour cream and add lava sauce

  15. JF says:

I tried this yesterday and for me, it’s a pass. There was hardly any beef in it, and as others have mentioned, but the time I got home to eat it there was no crunch left.

Good try, but to me it’s a fail. If there was more beef, then value wise I’d get it again.

  16. Robert says:

I just ate one. It was terrible

  17. John says:

TB needs to bring back the Triple Cheese Melt. Anybody remember that glorious creation?

  18. Royal says:

I just got my second Beefy Nacho Burrito, and this one’s absolutely loaded with the crunchy strips, and they’re kinda “above the burrito fold” to stop them from getting soggy. This one is really, really good!

  19. Ken says:

I tried one and liked it. However, I’ll never be truly satisfied until they bring the Bacon Club Chalupa back.

  20. Balls Mahoney says:

I tried this the other day in NYC and thought it was pretty good, go figure. Of course, I paid about $3 with the NYC surcharge, but then again I wasn’t that hungry and it still seemed to hit the spot. I’d try it again, but for .99 it seems like a better idea to have it outside the city.

  21. Thug Life says:

I liked this a lot. I passed on the sour cream though (hate sour cream) so that affected the overall taste I am sure.

  22. MP says:

Tried this a few times. Those chips get soggy real fast & turn to mush. It’s just … not good. Nothing really stands out in terms of flavor. Consistency was also a huge problem. It seemed like no bite had all 4 ingredients in it and even when it did, wasn’t particularly pleasing. It needed red sauce badly. Taken out of my rotation. I like the Beefy 5 Layer Burrito better.
