Fast Food Review: Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch Sandwich from Burger King

The “Home of the Whopper” is also known to offer up some hefty chicken sandwiches as well.  While driving by my local BK, I noticed a poster on their window for a new sandwich.  Introducing the Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch Sandwich from Burger King.

Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch Sandwich from Burger King

The Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch Sandwich is something totally new to me.  I didn’t realize that this sandwich was featured on the BK menu some years back.  Anyone recall the commercial featuring Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish? Trippy.  (lyrics here) This sandwich was something I had to try.  I have to say, this sandwich is pretty darn good.  The sandwich consists of a crispy chicken breast patty, bacon, cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, lettuce and tomato all inside a corn-dusted bun. The chicken has a nice flaky crust on the outside and is tender and moist on the inside.  Had I not been in a car driving, I may have actually taken the chicken out of my sandwich and peeled the crust off just to enjoy it by itself.  The ranch sauce was your typical ranch dressing, but what I liked was the amount that was on the sandwich.  It was just the right helping of the dressing.  It wasn’t too much where it overpowered some of the other ingredients.  The ranch was applied in a way that it complimented the meal rather than taking it over.

The cheddar cheese was just ok and a few bites had me thinking of those individually wrapped Kraft singles.  Obviously, the lettuce wasn’t much to get excited about but it was nice to have some thick slices of fresh tomato on the sandwich.  What I found somewhat disappointing was the lack of flavor coming from the bacon.  The bacon was definitely there, but the flavor wasn’t. If the name of the sandwich features bacon in it, you’d think the flavor of the bacon would be more memorable.

Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch in hand

While the BK Burger Shots have gotten all the publicity as of late, I’m glad to see something new on the Burger King menu.  Chicken sandwiches may be overlooked in favor of the burgers at BK but you should check out the Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch.  Overall, this was a very good chicken sandwich that I’ll definitely get again.  I just hope next time I’ll notice the bacon.

Pros: Great chicken flavor. Nice crust on the chicken. With the exception of the bacon, all the ingredients go great together.

Cons: Lack of bacon flavor. A bit messy. If you're driving and eating, make sure you have plenty of napkins. I consider it a bit pricey at $4.69, but that's probably because I enjoy the dollar menus!

I remember that commercial. Couldn’t get the song out of my head. Never actually tried the sandwich though. Looks good. Nice pictures.

  2. DJ Dedd says:

Agree on the review, though I think I got more bacon than you did.

  3. rob says:

It looks good, but not 990 calories good … that’s the same as a Five Guys burger with two patties.

  4. Haha, yeah the Darius commercial….I used to rock out to Hootie :)

These names are killing me “Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch Sandwich”…..they get longer and longer…no wonder the drive-thru takes so long…”I’ll have the Tendercrisp Bacon Honey Mustard Ranch Cheddar Ranch Crispy Chicken Smokehouse BBQ Wrap…..no Burger…..Jr.”

I’ll say that thing does look amazing!!!! …990 cals though, woooo

  5. Evan says:

I didn’t even know they still had that. Something about that cheese not being melty is making it not look good.

Wow, this brings memories of that creepy subservient chicken thing.

I had this piece of crap a couple months ago. I was dissapointed by both this sandwich and its limited time cousin, the Angry Whopper. It bacon and cheese really didn’t stand out. The cheese was barely melted for that matter. The Angry Whopper failed to deliver the spice that it promised despite a triple-threat of jalapenos, pepperjack cheese, and ‘angry sauce’. It was a “Slightly Irritated Whopper” at best. The last specialty item on BK’s menu that I thought was worth eating again and again was the late Sourdough Bacon Cheeseburger. I miss them soo much. The most epic burger I can remember in national fast food history was the short-lived Wendy’s Half-Pound Jalapeno Cheddar Melt. It was so good they didn’t even need to mention it had bacon in the title.

    Rob,
have to agree with you on the lack of spice on the angry whopper. It seemed like they tried to pile too much on that burger.

DJ Dedd, if you can get more bacon then hopefully next time I’ll get more too!

nice review johnny, good form. BK chicken is usually spot on, so its nice to see it dressed up in a new outfit.

I know you’ve had to have eaten at BK many times over the decades of your life. One should know by now, that what BK pawns off as bacon, is a farce.

I don’t even think it’s real bacon. You can tell it’s peeled off of wax sheets. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was squirted from a mold onto those sheets, from some sort of bacon flavored paste.

BK has the worst bacon I have ever had in my life. Putting it on a sandwich of any kind, is nothing more than a joke that adds fat to your meal. A real bad joke at that.

The chicken on the BK line of Tender Crisp Sandwiches is pretty darn good though. I don’t like ranch, as at most places, it’s nasty mayo with ranches spices, so can’t comment on the reviewed sandwich. I do enjoy Buffalo flavored chicken, and sadly BK’s Buffalo Sauce fails. It has a creaminess to it, that reeks of mayo being added to the hot sauce and butter. That is a huge fail. I could be wrong, but either way, it just isn’t as good as the good old standard sauce.

    @ Even

You’re right about the cheese. I bet it tastes better not being melted either.

The best advise I ever got, when it comes to BK, is always tell them not to melt your cheese. My friend’s wife was a regional manager for BK over the span of a couple decades. BK melts your cheese in a microwave on all of their sandwiches. Lame, and yet another epic fail by BK.

Good news! I loved this sandwich last time around and was sad to see it go (and lamented all the inferior iterations since). I will agree, though, that BK bacon is generally limp and gross.

  12. ChickenBaconCrap says:

This sandwich is seriously disgusting. The so-called cheddar on this sandwich is some kind of severly orange cheese imitation, with a texture so vile I could hardly take more than one bite. The ranch mixes with the grease from the chicken to leave an oil-slick aftertaste in the mouth that even Listerine cannot wash away. Don’t eat this sandwich. Save yourself some money and eat a peanutbutter sandwich–I promise you will be more satisfied.

  13. Fran says:

I am eating it right now and like it but now halfway through I am very nauseated and close to vomiting. Wow…

  14. BK Worker says:

I’m just a schmo who worked at a BK before.

The deal with the bacon is that it comes to the Burger King in sealed plastic bags. In the bags, whole strips of bacon are laid across wax paper and stacked. The bacon comes ‘partially cooked’.

To ‘prep’ the bacon the workers need to cut these slices of bacon in half (wax paper and all). Then, taking a specific number of bacon sheets, MICROWAVE them for a specific amount of time. This is supposed to make the bacon crisp up.

Even when this procedure is carried out correctly (honestly, rarely because its a pain the ass and takes forever to correctly do it) the result is like you took some of the thinnest crappiest bacon you’ve ever seen and nuked it for 10 seconds at home.

It does ‘crisp up’ a tiny bit. If it’s not correctly prepped (too many slices are nuked at once for example) then you get the soggy tasteless mess that is BK bacon.

The only way around this that I know of is to ask them to microwave the bacon on it’s own as a special order. This will make it crisp for you, but it will still not taste like ‘real bacon’.

  15. Big says:

Me and a guy I work with just picked up a couple of the Tendercrisp sandwiches. BLEH ! ! ! The only one of them that was ever any good was the Cheesy Bacon. Please bring it back.

  16. Big says:

Oh and one more the little 1$ spicy chicken crisp wow thats horrible ha ha it brings to thought what you would imagine one teaspoon of texas pete hotsauce mixed on top of breaded and dehydrated tuna! Stay away! Ha ha the promotional 1$ double cheeseburger is a steal. Its great.

  17. bambamboogieman says:

    greates burger ever to me!!!!

  18. some dude says:

Typical fast food sandwich always has limp, fatty, tasteless bacon. You’re just getting slices of bacon fat really. Nothing new there. The white lettuce and unwashed chemically ripened tomato slices generally don’t add much for flavor either.

  19. Biff McGee says:

The mere thought of Burger King makes me want to ralph!

  20. Ryan says:

It was gone for a while…just came back.
