Fast Food Review: Cheesy Bacon BK Wrapper from Burger King

What has happened to the bacon at Burger King?  When I reviewed the Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch Sandwich, I complained of a lack of flavor from their bacon.  I hoped it was just a one time thing.  I really wanted to get that salty, bacon goodness when I purchased the Cheesy Bacon BK Wrapper.  I walked away disappointed.  The bacon flavor was weak.  Very weak.

Cheesy Bacon Wrapper BK1

The Cheesy Bacon BK Wrapper has been on the BK breakfast menu for over a year now.  It started out being advertised as a limited time offering, but it’s been enjoying a decent run on the menu boards.  It seems relatively simple to throw together and tortillas must be dirt cheap.  With the ongoing “Wraps” trend and consumers leaning a lot on value, it’s no surprise this breakfast wrap has stuck around.  The BK Wrapper features cheddar cheese, a cheese sauce, bacon, hash browns, and egg all inside a soft tortilla. If you couldn’t tell by the double dose description, cheese is the dominant flavor here.  The sauce is gooey and tastes great.  I really enjoyed the combination of the cheese sauce with the hash browns.  The egg is similar to the bacon in this specific case where I know it’s there, but I can only really taste it if I make a conscious effort to do so.  The hash browns and cheese flavor are definitely stronger than anything else and they have a way of making you forget that there is also egg and bacon in the mix.  When I compare the shell to the Wake-Up Wrap from Dunkin Donuts, I enjoy the tortilla from BK better.  It also could be that I prefer a softer shell over a toastier shell.

Cheesy Bacon Wrapper BK2

After having this breakfast wrap, I’m convinced that Burger King is using a different, weaker flavored bacon than what was used in the past. It just isn’t as strong as it used to be and as a result the sandwiches are losing points.  If the bacon flavor was stronger, this could be a great breakfast wrap.  I’d suggest purchasing the Ham Omelet Sandwich if you are looking for a slightly cheaper option that tastes a lot better than this disappointment.

Cheesy Bacon Wrapper BK3

Pros: Nice cheese sauce. Hash browns taste great with the cheese sauce. I prefer this soft tortilla shell over Dunkin's toasty Wake-Up Wrap tortilla.

Cons: Where's the bacon? That's really my only complaint, but it's a biggie.

  1. I just finished writing my review for the Bacon Croiss’wich last night and basically ripped the bacon. It reminds me of the pre cooked bacon that you see on the shelves. They need to do something about it fast.

  2. If you go into the super market, and look at the real bacon (not the pre-cooked crap) you’ll be hard pressed to find bacon that looks like what BK cooks up…that’s not bacon that’s bacon on a recession diet. They obviously are trying to add a “premium” item but keep the cost low. They need to take a hint from Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s in the bacon game :)

  3. So do you guys really think that they use the precooked bacon? It would dave time for them when making the sandwiches if they did.

Erin: I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if BK is using precooked bacon. I’m not sure if they do, but I wouldn’t put it past them. I haven’t given it much thought lately, but the bacon is pretty poor now that you guys mention it!

I’m a fan of these wraps, particularly the combination of ingredients. It’s great for a value menu item. I agree that the bacon is lacking, though. If BK made the wrap larger and used premium bacon, I could see it being a signature item.

@ pav777 … I’m not a big fan of these but I agree 100% this being a signature item if maybe it was bigger and had better bacon. I like the hashbrowns at BK now, they seem to have altered them some and they are probably among the better ones in fast food….so the inclusion of a few into the wrap is a nice touch.

My best friend’s wife used to manage a BK. I can tell you right now that their bacon isn’t even bacon at all. It comes stuck to wax paper. You can tell it was oozed out of some sort of extraction machine onto the paper. I can’t recall if they actually cook it, or just heat it up in the microwave. It did look precooked to a point, as it almost looked the same as what you see on your sandwiches and such. It is by far the worst excuse for bacon I have ever seen. It’s a waist, and even more so if you fool yourself into getting it on one of their burgers.

@pav777: I totally agree with you. If they used premium, this wrap would be outstanding.

Frankly, I don’t mind if bacon comes precooked… I just want it to have some flavor! If they create a precooked bacon that tastes great, I’m all for it.

@Ryan: I know this may be off-topic, but I was wondering what you thought about the new BK “seven-incher” sandwich ad making the rounds on the web. Personally, I think its offensive and just all-around poor marketing.

  10. Ryan says:

@ pav777 … I’m not offended by it and I guess even tasteless publicity is still publicity….no one outside of Singapore would even know about it if not for the controversy. I don’t understand the point really. Maybe a marketing team trying to made a name for themselves. Kinda lame.

  11. pav777 says:

I think BK has learned that all marketing is global today and not all publicity is necessarily good. I’ve seen a lot of people repulsed by the ad on various forums. I’m not sure who BK thought this ad would appeal to. We all know sex sells, and for brands like Victoria Secret it’s appropriate, but why BK? Sex is not on my mind when I go buy a burger. BK’S site won’t accept email so thanks for letting me vent.

Wow. BK sure is featured a lot in this breakfast section. Me, I HATE Burger Kings breakfast. I don’t hate Burger King, just their breakfast. They have the WORST bacon on the planet. It tastes like it was dipped in kerosene and is flat as paper. Their sausage is not very good either. The only thing I love..LOVE..at BK breakfast is their French Toast Sticks. So Good. Their croissanwich is a great sandwich ruined by yucky sausage. The bread and cheese covers up the sausage and egg taste enough to make it a good choice when other options aren’t available.

Of all the fast-food places that have hash browns—THEY ALL SUCK. Except for Bojangles. I know BoJo is primarily in the south, but their hashbrowns are the best IMO a fast-food place currently serves. Their “Bo-Rounds” supposedly have some onion in them. The “hashbrowns” McD, BK, and others have are BORING. Their cajun seasoning adds even more flavor. Try their Bo-Rounds out, or their Seasoned Fries, served all day. AWESOME!

  14. Kristine says:

I just tried one of these today, and I am visiting every website I can Google to tell you it tasted like nothing, was so unappetizing that I ate 1/2 of one and got rid of the rest. Hash browns as filler? bacon that wouldn’t feed my cat? an egg slab? american cheese? it truly sucked.

  15. kat says:

bk’s bacon isn’t real bacon. but this bk wrapper is still good when you are on your way to work and skipped breakfast at home. it’s quick and easy to eat on the run. the cheese sauce is the winner of the breakfast burrito. it’s not fine dining people so take it for what it’s worth. it’s a cheap, better-than-frozen-breakfast that’s meant for stuffing your face quickly and then going about your business.

p.s. i agree with cress about bojangles bo rounds…they are the best fast food hash browns!
