Fast Food Review: Big Hot Ham ‘N’ Cheese from Hardee’s

The closest Hardee’s to me is about an hour away, so whenever I am near one, I always get a standard favorite of mine.  This trip was no exception, I couldn’t resist the Big Hot Ham ‘N’ Cheese.

There is nothing fancy about this sandwich really, just your basic ham and swiss cheese on a sesame seed bun. Sometimes it’s good to stick with simple rather than conquering something with too many ingredients to count.  The Big Hot Ham ‘N’ Cheese represents tasty simplicity.  It doesn’t blow you away with anything yet it’s a satisfying sandwich that always gives me what I’ve come to expect from it.  The sesame seed bun is always soft and fresh and that’s all I can really ask for when it comes to a bun.  The sandwich is loaded with ham and 2 slices of swiss cheese.  Some ham can be extremely salty, but the ham used in this sandwich is not like that.  There truly is no need for condiments.  This sandwich is packed full of flavor with just the ham and cheese alone.  No need to add anything additional, just stick to the basics, it works.

Big Hot Ham 'N' Cheese

My only complaint about this sandwich would be that the ham and cheese is usually just piled in the center of the sandwich (as you can see in the pic above).  I’m sure no one likes having to take their sandwich apart just to put it back together the correct way before you can grub down.  As for nutrition details, with 520 cal, 24 grams of fat and  2190 mg of sodium-look out arteries.  As for grubbing on the go-if the sandwich is made correctly,  it can easily be eaten while you are driving (I don’t advocate bad driving but I know a lot of people are in a rush :D).  Without extra condiments, there is not much of a mess here.

By the way...Here's the sandwich pic from the Hardee's website. Stacked and great ingredient distribution. Oh well.

Pros: No need for anything extra. Great flavor. Great for grubbing on the go.

Cons: Everything piled in the center of the sandwich. Not a very healthy sandwich. Pricey.

Taste: 7.75/10
Value: 5.25/10
Grubbing on-the-go: 9.00/10
Price: $4.19

Overall GrubGrade: 7.75/10

  1. That would suck. Driving an hour away to have a sandwich that you look forward to not compiled the right way. I hate it when people who work at the restaurants don’t care. I’ve worked in foodservice before and it hasn’t always been pretty but I at least cared about my customers enough to make sure their food was done right.
I hope your next experience is better Heather!

  2. Haha, that promo pic it too funny.

I was just discussing this with my brother…we’ve got an Arby’s within 5 minutes but I think between the both of us we literally have been once and know of about 3 trips amongst others we know. No one I know EVER goes there, I don’t quite get it. They seem like they’ve got good stuff and they DO advertise in my area. I really want to try that new Roastburger…..but I doubt I’ll ever actually go by….maybe it’s that its been there forever and feels like it’s stuck in the 80s…..I don’t know.

    @ Bear … Hardee’s not Arby’s 😀

I used to work at a Hardee’s when I was 15, and I’m pretty sure the ham and cheese sandwich is exactly the same now as it was then. The reason the ham is in that tiny pile in the center of the bun is because the hame portions are laid out in little paper trays and kept in a refrigerator. They pull one out and microwave it whenever a customer orders it, and then dump the little tray out onto the bun.

I always liked the ham and cheese, but it irritated me that they say it’s swiss cheese. There’s no swiss cheese flavor to it at all, and I’m pretty sure it’s just white american cheese. Other than that, it’s a pretty decent fast food ham sandwich.

@Ryan – haha, damn! That’s too funny. My bad. Well….still hold true about Abry’s. Now Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr. I’m a huge fan of. Too bad they produced this slop.

  6. I have had this before pre blog and the taste was ok, but not my “go to” sandwich at Hardees. I agree with everything you said here and would pass on this. Great review Heather!

Did anyone read the post? Heather likes it!!! I like it too actually…it’s nothing to knock your socks off but still pretty good. Not many fast food joints are serving up ham and cheese sandwiches so I think that is another plus. Arby’s Ham and Cheese MarketFresh is better though…that’s around $4.50 and this is pretty close to it and the Arby’s is waaaaay more filling. Difficult to shell out the 4bucks for the Hardees Ham/Cheese.

@Bear – That’s weird, I read Hardees at the top, but for some reason, by the end of the review, like you, I thought we were talking about Arby’s. They do have a similar sandwich there, don’t they? Also, you should see if the Arby’s by you has the 5 for $5 roast beef sandwiches. Just add some Arby’s sauce (or the condiment of your choice) and they are pretty damn good. It usually ends up being two meals and a snack for me (they survive microwaving quite well).

First of all, why would you buy this when most Hardee’s still sell the 99 cent hot ham and cheese? Actually, now that I think about it, this might be an off-the-menu item, like the 99 cent spicy chicken. Or, is that just my local Hardees restaurants?
Also, ChrisSh – I can’t believe that some Arby’s still have the five for five deal! I’m so jealous! Here it is now 4 for 5, and only with a coupon or on special occasions!

  10. ChrisSh says:

@Jessica – No need to be jealous anymore. I went there today and they don’t have it anymore. 🙁

  11. Jessica says:

I drove by Arby’s today, and in addition to the free roast beef special, they have a five for five reg. roast beef, after 5 pm! YAY! I hope they continue this for a while! I am going to buy 10 and freeze them – they keep pretty well in the freezer!

  12. Mel says:

OMG! Hardees is my favorite restaurant of all time (the fries are not as good as they used to be but still good). I do drive 40 minutes to get a Hot ham and cheese! I am on limited income but it is still worth the price for the taste buds. Sometimes I get 2 or just eat one and put one in the fridge when I get home for the next day. As far as the sodium that is actually good for me. I am required to increase my daily sodium intake (I know odd but true) for my condition. I had to increase it even more from the last time I went to the doc. Oh how I want one now, lol.

  13. Paul Bohannon says:

I sincerely disagree. At my hardees in Boaz AL. (NOT arbys – jeez!) they make the sandwich and THEN microwave the whole thing. What you end up with (since they must put it in there for WAY too long) is a tough seedy bum with a pile of ham in the center nuked until the edges are crispy swimming in a white puddle of what may have once been a cheese based product of some kind. Also the ham is SO salty you require a liter of water just to wash it down. I finished mine a half hour ago and my mouth still is coated with salt! Even with a coupon for 1.99 this is HORRIBLE. I will not buy this again.
