Food News: Wendy’s Going “Artisan” with Chicken, adding New Frostys

Big news out of Wendy’s this week. with the chain looking to upgrade its chicken menu and poised to take two new frosty combinations nationwide. As reported by BurgerBusiness.com, Wendy’s is testing at least three new chicken sandwiches: the Bruschetta Chicken (430-560 calories), the Bistro Cheddar Chicken (480-590 calories), and the Spicy Chipotle Crispy Chicken (410 calories). The former two items are testing in Salt Lake City, Utah and Columbus, Ohio, while the Spicy Chipotle Crispy Chicken is being tested in the Dallas, Texas area. According to Wendy’s nutritional information, other chicken sandwiches may be available in certain markets, including a value menu Monterey Ranch Crispy Chicken Sandwich, as well as Buffalo and BBQ Dipped Chicken Sandwiches.

I stopped into my local Wendy’s the other day and was able to get the scoop on many of these items, and snap some photos. Apparently, Wendy’s has gone “Artisan” with the new premium chicken sandwiches, introducing a bakery-fresh, butter-toasted bun in addition to promising a whole breast filet and fresh veggies. These changes can be applied to any Premium Chicken Sandwich (Grilled, Homestyle, or Spicy). As for the new Bruschetta Chicken and the Bistro Cheddar Chicken, the bellow picture shows the construction of each, which were priced at $4.49 and $4.69, respectively, in my area.

I also spoke to a Wendy’s employee at the location, who confirmed that two new Frosty treats are soon to come. An advertisement in the restaurant confirms this – although I apologize for the picture not coming out. Of course, I didn’t just stop in the take pictures and ask questions, and I did get a chance to sample one of these new menu items (ahem, my man Keith). A full review will come shortly, but for now, here’s a sneak peek:

Does seem like an interesting concept. Looks like they are making the chicken breasts thicker for these sandwiches.

Not only are the testing the Monterey Ranch Crispy Chicken Sandwich in the Grand Rapids, Michigan market, they did a “take this survey and get a 5 dollar Wendy’s gift card for doing so”. I did, and got the card. The sandwich is VERY good. Very crispy chicken breast, with pepper jack cheese, lettuce and a ranch sauce. One of the best chicken sandwiches from a FF place I have ever had…and only 99 cents! It was awesome!

Adam you had me giggling because I was thinking the same thing the whole way through. 🙂

The sandwiches look really delicious, especially the one you had – I can’t tell which one it is, but YUM.

And why do they want to mess with the greatness that is a Frosty.

  4. I’m really excited about these! The new buns sound good too.

Value Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich? That just don’t sound right!

I would like a chicken sandwich served on a bun that was handcrafted by a monk in a remote part of Bavaria.

Gross…..Wendy’s on this round = Losing!

Wendy’s is changing things that don’t need changed. I think the food quality is going south as far as taste. I ate the spicy chicken today (used to be a favorite) and didn’t like the new bun and thought the fillet tasted cheaper than before. Definitely wasn’t the same chicken they used to use. A lot of people like the new fries. I don’t. My wife liked them better than me but today thought they were nasty. She loves the single with cheese but also today didn’t like it. She told me we don’t need to eat there anytime soon and I agreed.

  8. Nick says:

wait, so what are the new frostys?

    • Adam says:

I think one is Caramel Themed. Perhaps Caramel Apple? The location I visited had no received their shipment yet and the people I spoke with were not 100% sure.

I’m very excited for them. Since there’s no dq around me new fast food frozen treats are highly welcomed.

  9. CraigRussell says:

I know! It was awesome…I ordered at the drive thru, and then the guy taking the money says “if you want to take this online survey you get a gift card” that’s all I needed to hear…and the fact the sandwich is AWESOME helps too…its a smaller sandwich, but very tasty and fresh tasting…maybe I have just gotten them on 3 good occasions but they have me hooked!

  10. Koni says:

Can anyone confirm whether the buffalo dipped sandwich is coming back nationally?

  11. Jeff says:

Can’t confirm that the buffalo dipped sandwich will be nationwide, but we’ve had the buffalo and BBQ sandwiches in Des Moines, IA for the past week or so.

    anything new for Canada?

  13. Nick says:

looking at their regional nutritionals it shows two parfaits in the frosty section one being a caramel apple one and the other being oreo so I’m guessing those are going to be the new additions to the frosty line

  14. Bob says:

Are the buffalo-dipped sandwiches the value menu crispy chicken patty, or the filet?

  15. Scott says:

I got to try the Chipotle ones here in Tejas. They were hit and miss. I did a review on them you can check out below but ill do a quick summary. Burger version= bad, Chicken version= good.

I hope to see the other ones soon though!

Bob, when they had the flavor-dipped sandwiches a few years back, they used the filet. They were amazing.
