Introducing… Chili Cheese Fries from Wendy’s

Time for some test market news. Spotted in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts by GrubGrade reader Steven, Wendy’s Chili Cheese Fries.

Take some Wendy’s Natural Cut Fries and pile on the chili and cheese.  Priced at $2.49 for a limited time.

    I wish you could see me right now throwing a shovel of dirt onto the grave of Wendy’s right now.
    I have already half filled the graves of Subway and Burger King.

      You have a rather unique view on reality, being that Subway is the 2nd largest restaurant franchise globally, BK is still the #2 burger joint in this country and Wendy’s, to reasons unknown to many seems to have a huge following in this country and is the #3 burger chain in this country.

        Those numbers mean nothing.
        They are the second largest because they hand out franchises like water, not because they are good.
        As I have said before, my friend owns 4 in a 5 miles radius of each other.

        They are cannibalizing each other nationwide. The average Jimmy John’s or comparable restaurant does about $700,000 plus in sales a year. The average Subway does under $400,000.

        Another friend of mine’s family owns two buildings that house Burger Kings and I know for a fact they are not doing well because they have come back and asked them to lower the rent a few times because they were not doing well. A third one in town actually closed down. Heck you can drive by BK and see the lack of cars there and know they are in trouble. If they are not doing well in my town with the type of people that live here and the lack of competition, then God help them in major towns with way more and better alternatives.

        As these healthier, and better tasting alternatives to the old warhorses grow, they will eventually displace them.
        It will not happen overnight, but it will happen.

          Do you have any idea what profit margin is? Sales and profit are two different things. Has it not occured to you that since 2008 many businesses have gone back to landlords seeking a reduction in rent? Nothing you say makes any sort of business sense, you are just working on some sort of delusional hunch that because you do not like these restaurants that they will fail.

            If you do then you will at least be qualified to discuss business with me on an equal level.
            You might want to throw in a few more business degrees while you are at it.

            Maybe that is why you can’t comprehend what I am saying.

            These companies had decades to establish themselves and build multiple locations. The fact is the new companies have better food and choices at the same prices and in some cases lower prices.

            The only reason Five Guys and In n Out are not everywhere slaughtering most of these guys around the country is because they are not selling the franchises for them at the rate that people want to buy them.
            I have at least 10 locations in a 30 mile radius that I can put Five Guys restaurants in and people that would build them tomorrow if they could, cash money.

            You should go online and read the reviews for In N Out. There may be 2% negative reviews, if any at all. If that does not make places like Burger King and Wendy’s shudder in their boots, I don’t know what will.

            Hi SPM, don’t worry about J.B. and what he just babbled about how “educated” he is and how unworthy your opinion may be.

            I have an MBA, *and* I am smart enough to know that a degree does not “qualify” anyone in the business world as anything more than a book-smart bundle of debt. Many of the most brilliant business minds never even bothered to get a degree.

            If he doesn’t understand this, than he’s not “qualified” to claim he understands business, and he’s tremendously naive and immature.

      This isn’t the first time JB has stated these views. The data you cited, SPM, is really the most powerful way to refute him. Doing some basic math, one can see that it doesn’t matter if an individual Subway has lower profit or revenue than a Jimmy John’s; their sheer volume and the ubiquity of the brand makes them a success anyway.

      I can’t stand Subway, but unlike JB, I don’t try to package my own subjective thoughts into business predictions. That’s an egotistic mentality.

    Anyone remember chili, chips, and cheese from Wendy’s? It subbed taco-salad chips for the fries–and was actually kind of amazing for a childhood, fast food treat. I think they had it in the ’90s and then not again since.

    Cheeeese looks nasty maaaaaaan.

    Lay off the cheese a little bit and get some more chili..

    Heck, whenever I went to Wendy’s I just ordered a small fries and chili and dumped the fries in chili! (ate a little bit of chili though so it wouldn’t overflow)

    Also I do think that Wendy’s old fries were pretty darn good, I kinda miss them too, haha.

    JB – I actually do have an MBA and it is in Finance. To compare BK to In-N-Out is a bit of an apples and oranges comparison, one being global and the other being regional in the US. If you knew anything about In-N-Out’s business model you would know that as a whole BK is not concerned with that type of competitor per se. You consistently refer to instances in the 20 mile radius of your home that you frequent, a little advice, trying traveling around the country and commenting on the industry on a macro level rather than the observations you make in your town and the reviews you read on the internet.

    PlatypusTheGoofy – I just love how people who personally have a distaste for a restaurant believe in their minds that their tastes will ultimately decide the fate of the restaurant.

      Agreed. And also In-n-Out doesn’t franchise. All the restaurants are owned by them. I hope they keep it that way too. The franchised Five Guys in California can’t hold a candle to the ones in the East Coast. I don’t know what it is, but going west lost some of that food sparkle that they had.

    I have had these chili cheese fries. The chili doesn’t stick to the fries at all and the fries do tend to get soggy rather quickly. It leaves you with two options:

    1. Eat the fries first and try to get them in your stomach in about 2 minutes before the fries become part of the soup that is the chili and cheese.

    2. Be glad that Wendy’s has big plastic spoons.
