Food News: Subway Launches Orchard Chicken Salad Sandwich
UPDATE: Read our FULL REVIEW
Cranberries and Turkey might be the classic Thanksgiving combo, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to wait for leftovers to get your sweet and savory sandwich fix. That’s because Subway recently announced the launch of the chain’s new Orchard Chicken Salad Sandwich as part of both its $5 Footlong menu and Fresh Fit® menu. Sounds enticing:

Looking for a NEW summer flavor? Try the NEW Orchard Chicken Salad sub. Flavorful chunks of tender chicken, crunchy celery, sweet red apples, golden raisins, cranberries, light creamy mayo and your choice of crisp veggies, all on fresh baked bread. So taste-tacular!
The new sandwich weighs in at 370 calories and 8 grams of fat (1.5 saturated) for a 6-inch sub. It also packs 20 grams of protein and six grams of fiber. It’s a limited time offer, so be sure to check this one out if you’re a fan of the chain. Personally, I think I feel a “Sandwich Sunday” coming on at my local Subway later this week.

Hmmm, I wonder how it compares to my long lost love…

1I don’t know how anything can compare to Arby’s Pecan Chicken Salad, but it is certainly worth a try!
2I’ll give it a try…. the Arby’s sandwich is good, BUT have you ever checked out it’s nutritional value? The Subway choice is much healthier!
3Healthier, Less expensive & less fatening
4Oooh, I’ve made a similar Thanksgiving turkey salad (turkey, cranberries, celery, walnuts, mayo), but this one doesn’t involve me chopping anything.
Their regular chicken salad is pretty sad and bland, will definitely have to give this one a try.
5This looks like it could be delicious. I can’t justify paying for a tuna sandwich, and I can’t bring myself to get the seafood salad sandwich… but this looks like it could be a terrific alternative to processed meat sandwiches.
6I work for subway and we just got it in today, tried it, and I liked it a lot.
7Yea, I love sweet elements on a sandwich. As much as the chicken sandwich combo is a classic, I think I might actually like this better with smoked turkey breast on honey oat bread. Can you say yum?
8I used to think Subway was kind of overrated, but between this and their new breakfast options, I am going to have to stop in soon and give it another go!
9That looks and sounds fabulous! I ironically just bought all the fixins for homemade chicken salad sandwiches; swansom chicken, olive oil Hallman’s mayo and pickles. But I will still try Subway’s version eventually.
10I haven’t eaten at Subway in ages. Has anybody tried their breakfast menu yet? How does it rank for a fast food breakfast?
11do you ever order that (brick) grilled chicken sandwich?
think (brick) premade egg omelet.
12Oh this looks so good. It has been eons since I have had subway – here’s hoping the sodium content is lower than some of the other sandwiches – I *might* get to try this.
I doubt it though – the bread and mayo will blow it out of the park.
13They use Lite Mayo, the calorie count is reasonable when you consider the protien and fiber. if you skip the bread and make it a salad it would be even healthier. I tried it today, I am on a 1600 cal/day diet. It was terrific. a worthy splurge.
14Emily,
I used to think the same thing, but really, no local sub place can match Subway’s deals. If you have a good franchise in your area it’s just as good, if not better, than any “Mike’s Subs” or whatever you’d find in Suburbia, USA.
Nikki,
I reviewed their new eggwhite muffin melt a whole back. I thought it was very good considering other FF breakfast options. You can read the full review here:

Skippymom,
Oh c’mon. Live dangerously for an afternoon
What’s a little salt gonna do anyways? Just the other day I read that they’ve now linked UV radiation while driving to skin cancer. So we’re all screwed. I say lets all just try to live decently moderate and healthy lives, while at the same time enjoying good stuff, and hope it all turns out for the best.
15Grub -
I was diagnosed with CHF a few weeks ago and if I overdo the sodium I swell up like a Macy’s day balloon – it hurts and isn’t good for the ol’ heart – but I can’t tell you how I miss Subway – I did check this out and a 6″ sub is 660 mg of sodium – so it isn’t too bad [heck of a lot better than some of the sandwiches that I love]- I could split it out for lunch and dinner with some soup and not exceed my limit for the day.
Eating a low sodium diet is tricky – as one of my pals like to say “But everything tastes so much better with salt.” Yeah, I know
heehee.
Thanks for the blog and allowing me to live vicariously through y’all.
16Oh shoot! Well my all means then, do what must be done! Is it one of those things where you can balance it out? I mean like first have a sweet potato or some kale or something for the potassium haha?
17If you drink alot of excess water it dilutes your sodium levels. drink a gallon or two daily
18I honestly don’t understand why anyone eats at Subway. I’ve never eaten anything from there that has made me want to go back. I genuinely wonder what the appeal is.
19No nuts of any kind though, that sucks.
20That sandwich looks like it has potential. Personally, I’m not for Subway because if I have a sandwich I’m going to do it right but still that looks yummy!
21why does it need to have celery. i hate the taste and texture so much, and I could have potentially been living on this sub if it weren’t for the work that’s going to be required to remove the celery. I love my chicken salad with apples and cranberries though
22I agree – I never liked the celery bits that get thrown in any kind of chicken/tuna salad, and then i have to get mayo all over my fingers as i pick every little bit out. The only way i can eat celery is covered in blue cheese after eating an order of wings.
23Nikki, I tried their breakfast last week.
I got egg whites on a wheat sub roll with provolone and a bunch of veggies.
It was very good. I expected a tiny portion of egg whites, but it was actually large. Everything else was typical Subway, pretty decent and it totally filled me up.
Didn’t blow me away, but it was better than I expected. I’ll definitely eat it again.
24This makes me very excited. I don’t like Subway very much. I prefer Quizno’s, but my local Quizno’s just CLOSED forever! I’m so sad!
25Subway is the only sub place in my town now, so I’m glad they have something that excites me now. I was sick of the same subs over and over. I do like their breakfast though, since you can order an egg white!
I’ve tried this sandwich and really wasn’t impressed. I’ve had chicken salad sandwiches from FF places before (Arbys and Panera, both had excellent Chk Salad Sandwiches) but this just wasn’t too good. The texture was all over the place and the combinations of raisins and dried cranberries were overkill… Some walnuts or something would’ve helped.
As for the person who asked about the breakfast sandwiches, they are pretty damn good if you get em right. They’re about the only thing I get from Subway anymore (I eat there a few times a week). My personal favorite is bacon w/egg whites, little bit of shredded cheese, green peppers, onions, and spinach on the flatbread…. sooooooooo good.
26I can never find a chicken salad sandwich in a store that I like very much, which amazes me because it’s so simple to make at home. I make it with mayo, craisins, grapes, celery and sunflower seeds…so the Subway one looks pretty similar to what I make, maybe I’ll give it a try.
27I work at subway and sampled this and personally, would rather have it in the form of a salad, that would be awesome! So go in to subway and make it a salad!
28Had a chance to try it and loved it. Glad to see they opted to use “Light Mayo” in the production and not the “Full Flavor” mayo that is used in mixing the Tuna (which weighs in at over 500 cals for a 6-inch).
Mad props to Subway.
29no thanks … i will stick to my boring turkey sub … lol
30I might try em only because I’ll eat any real ribs.
31I don’t know about that… I find it hard to believe that Subway made a chicken SALAD with that few calories.
32The idea of raisins in a salad just worries me. Raisins anywhere worries me, really. I’m just biased.
33Like several other comments said, I haven’t been to Subway in ages … wasn’t there once a thing as $2.99 foot long Tuesdays? Or am I making that up? I haven’t felt that > $5 for a combo that includes potato chips was that great of a value
Anyway, with their transition to breakfast and Seattle’s Best coffee(one of the better mass-produced brands – hate the new logo btw) I’ve wanted to try it. Now with this new Chicken salad I think I’ll have to make a stop and try it out.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and the opportunity to win the SB GC!
34I DO have a Subway giftcard to use up, but something about premade salads reallly skeeves me. And I can’t have gluten, which now makes me wonder what GF options Subway has other than salads? Anything?? I’ll have to work on that one…
35This was terrible.
36I’ve been wishing for a chicken salad sandwich at Subway for a while, I always have to make my own! But truthfully, this doesn’t seem like it will be that good. I will definitely try it out though!
37i’ve always said i’ll eat at subway again when their sandwiches actually look like the ones in their commercials…. but i might actually try this. we’ll see!
38It is very good. Ihad a chicken salad sandwich from Subway today and it is delicious, low calorie and had that sweet, salty taste. I had mine with onions, a little lettuce and pepperjack cheese with pepper, it was yummy.
39Tried this sandwich with my brother.
40Absolutely terrible and Subway has never let me down before.
It is like they did no taste testing at all on this sandwich.
Taste, texture everything was just absolutely wrong.
If I had eaten this in the restaurant, I would have seriously considered asking for my money back.
It was good, but very small serving size. Plus my apples were frozen. I dont like eating frozen apples.
41Tried this today at my local Walmart Subway franchise. It was really terrific. !!
42@RYAN- HOLY CRAP! OUR CHICKEN SALAD WOES HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!!! VIDEO REVIEW!!!
43Hahaha…I’m not so sure about this actually. I think I’ll wait and see if Adam tries it.
By the way, I am currently working on the next video but it’s not a review.
44Could be a while, Ryan. Went to Subway for breakfast this morning and my local sandwich artist turned out to be a jerk. I miss my patient and helpful Salt Lake area sandwich artists
45I just had this sandwich.
Not a bad sandwich at all. Because they don’t use processed lunch meats, the sodium was noticeably less.
Of course, it’s not the best chicken salad you’ll ever have, but for $5 at a foot long, it was quite a good lunch, I highly recommend it if you like that sweet and savory combination
46i wonder if i can get all the toppings of a foot long put onto a six inch piece of bread? haha
47i tried this sandwhich last night, the picture looked good. however, there was very little chicken salad on the sandwhich. not enough to actually taste. the best part was the cranberries but honestly i can do a much better job making this at home and it will be fresh won’t waste my money on this sub again.
48Jewel Foods deli has a great chicken salad. Subway salad is ok but Jewel Foods their’s taste much better. An even better chicken salad is the one you make at home.
49I actually really like this one. I’ve been craving it all day but I’m stuck at work so I’ve been googling it and reading people’s reviews so I can relive it vicariously through these write ups. I know, I’m crazy.
50absolutely awful…texture awful…no taste at all…grapes were soggy…barely no chicken…no flavor at all…Usually love all of subway’s products..but this is one that really was a disapointment..I threw it away after my first bite…yuck!!!! Arby’s now that chicken salad ROCKS!!!
51I really like this sandwich. I have had it about 10 times since it came out…I really hope they keep it! It was a perfect treat at the beach yesterday. A nice cold sweet treat for a hot day. I am actually going to have it for lunch today…but I might try it as a salad to save on calories.
52I really love subway’s new orchard chicken salad sandwich……very tasty!!
53They lost me at the raisins.
54I think Subway did a good job with this one especially if you look at the calorie contents.A sandwich ( mayo based)with bread included for 370 calories is really not bad and it’s quite filling. And the ingridients are not bad either.I do not even need a side with it.I probably had it like 10 times already.I hope Subway consider keeping it around !!!
55Great chicken salad. Would be even better if it had pecans in it. Footlong needs to have more chicken salad on it though, but I ask for spinach and banana peppers and it cuts the sweetness back some. Still a very good sandwich.
