Food News: The Wise Guy Burger from Red Robin

An italian-inspired burger with marinara sauce, mozzarella sticks, pepperoni slices and banana peppers. What do you think?  Going a little too far with this one is what I’d say.  I’m cringing at the thought of spicy pepperoni, marinara and hamburger.  It’s called The Wise Guy Burger and it’s available at Red Robin for a limited time.  At around $8-9 bucks, I think I’d opt for a Banzai Burger instead.

The pepperoni and marinara are what’s making you cringe, and not the fried cheese sticks? LOL! I’ll be trying this one if I can get to Red Robin sometime soon.

@ Adam Bomb … Hahaha…well yeah maybe that too, but I don’t know, it could work. The Mozzarella sticks in that meatball sub I had from Ike’s Place really have me thinking it might be ok for a burger too. I think pepperoni/hamburger might be the most cringeworthy, but who knows…it might taste good. Some people cringe at pineapple on pizza but I love it. :)

  2. Planning on going to Red Robin friday night. I need to try this

You’re kidding me. Please tell me this isn’t real.

@Greg – you should freeze this, then re-heat so it qualifies for a review.

Hmm, I’ve never been to a Red Robin, but there is one near me apparently and I like all of these ingredients separately, so… I think I might have to try this. Do we know the nutritional info?

  5. Alex says:

Any calorie count on this monster? I can’t imagine.

This is absolutely too out-there for me not to try! Besides, after becoming a fan of the Sicilian, that other wonderful burger of theirs with pepperoni, I’m almost absolutely certain they know what they’re doing.

  7. @Josie @Greg should freeze it review it then fry it!

This thing is massive! I still miss having a Red Robin within 10 minuets from my house. Oh well. I can always get some when we go out to eat with Randy’s parents!

@ChrisSH and Alex: I think we’re probably better off NOT knowing the nutritional info on this one ;)

I am all over this like a turkey on a grasshopper. This goes beyond my burgers should be simple ideals, but screw it, I’ll be trying one if I get to a Red Robin anytime soon.

I’ve used mozzarella sticks on burgers I’ve grilled myself, as well as marinara sauce, and they came out incredible. I heated the mozzarella sticks ahead of time, and melted them a little on top of the burger while it was on the grill. Everything had that great charcoal smokey flavor that you just can’t get with those fake excuses for a grill that use gas. I just wish I had thought of the pepperoni. Mozzarella sticks and marinara sauce go great with hamburgers. The banana peppers and pepperoni would seem to take it to the next level of greatness, although I really see no need to top meat with meat these days. (I’ve even grown tired of bacon on my burgers)

If the nutritional info is anything like their other burgers, I’m guessing this thing weighs in with at least 1,100 calories, 60g of fat, and a day’s worth of sodium.

  11. Adam Bomb says:

@Ralpho: If that’s the case, then:

Math lesson for the day : 1,100 calories + 60g fat + tons of sodium = delicious.

    lol

  12. So I tried this out friday night. Here are my thoughts.

In a nutshell, this was a better thing on paper than in actuality.

The burger was itself was your standard Red Robin burger but it had a decidedly awkward taste to it. I mean, if you wanted an Italian style burger you would expect to have cheese melted sloppily over the burger with distinctive tomato sauce taste, spicy pepperoni etc. Right?

This was like they took a bunch of items left over from the test kitchen, and threw them together. The burger did not hold together well, and the tastes didn’t quite fire off together.

Translation: The mozz sticks, pepperoni, banana peppers, sauce all tasted fine individually. But together they didn’t belong.

I will not buy this again. However, next time I will ask to get the Royal (my fave) and see if they will throw some mozzarella sticks on top.

    Overall rating for me: Meh

I’m going to Red Robin for my birthday dinner in a couple of weeks, and I was all excited about trying the Wiseguy Burger. After reading Gregory’s review, I’m not so sure I want to waste the rare trip to Red Robin on the Wise Guy… Thanks for the heads-up, Gregory.

Maybe I’ll go after the Royal instead…

  14. Well its for your birthday Adam, maybe you should buy it and the Royal. ;)

Be interested to see if my experience was unique to my location or if it truly is not as good as it could be.
